About this author

S. Jae-Jones, called JJ, is a voracious and indiscriminate reader, an avid traveller, and something of an adrenaline junkie.

Born and raised in sunny Los Angeles, she lived in New York City for ten years before relocating down to Dixie, where is comfortably growing fat on grits and barbecue. When not writing, she can be found rock-climbing, skydiving, taking photographs, drawing pictures, and dragging her dog on ridiculously long hikes.

REVIEW POLICY: I'm really only here to organize my reading. I only give ratings if they are 4 stars or higher, mostly as a note to myself to round up my year-end personal Best Of lists.

FRIENDING POLICY: I friend/follow on a selective basis that looks an awful lot like whim.

As promised, this is the post I wrote when I was deep in the midst of the submission swamp. For obvious reasons, I did not publish it at the time because, as I said, Who wants to see that? But if there’s one thing I’ve learned since joining the writer ranks of the publishing process, it’s that neuroses bubble up and that while you think you’re alone in the process, you’re really not. People oft... Read more of this blog post »

"Since the gooorgeous cover is live, here's some quick details people have been curious about:

Yes, the whole thing is set in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Because there's nothing like destroying your hometown in a book.
Yes, there's a generation ship...." Read more of this review »

Henry James
“Intelligent, unscrupulous, determined, and capable of seeing a man strangled without changing color.”
Henry James, The American

“This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.”
Sid Ziff

Philip Pullman
“I stopped believing there was a power of good and a power of evil that were outside us. And I came to believe that good and evil are names for what people do, not for what they are.”
Philip Pullman, The Amber Spyglass

Philip Pullman
“I'll be looking for you, Will, every moment, every single moment. And when we do find each other again, we'll cling together so tight that nothing and no one'll ever tear us apart. Every atom of me and every atom of you... We'll live in birds and flowers and dragonflies and pine trees and in clouds and in those little specks of light you see floating in sunbeams... And when they use our atoms to make new lives, they wont' just be able to take one, they'll have to take two, one of you and one of me, we'll be joined so tight...”
Philip Pullman, His Dark Materials Trilogy: The Golden Compass / The Subtle Knife / The Amber Spyglass

Philip Pullman
“...But it gradually seemed to me that I'd made myself believe something that wasn't true. I'd made myself believe that I was fine and happy and fulfilled on my own without the love of anyone else. Being in love was like China: you knew it was there, and no doubt it was very interesting, and some people went there, but I never would. I'd spend all my life without ever going to China, but it wouldn't matter, because there was all the rest of the world to visit... And I thought: am I really going to spend the rest of my life without feeling that again? I thought: I want to go to China. It's full of treasures and strangeness and mysteries and joy.”
Philip Pullman, The Amber Spyglass
