Created in Darkness by Troubled Americans: The Best of McSweeney's, Humor Category, a collection from the clever young writers that bring us the McSweeney's literary journal and Web site, and co-edited by their leader, Dave Eggers, is funny from the first page. And by "first page," we mean the table contents. Of course not every essay, list, and swatch of dialogue are created equal, but the collection has many tasty morsels that are well worth a read, a read to friends, and then a re-read, after a decent interval has elapsed.
Most appealing in the book's starting lineup is J.M. Tyree's "On the Implausibility of the Death Star's Trash Compactor." Humorous as well as thought-provoking, this essay makes the perfect amuse bouche for what is arguably the collection's main course of hilarity, "Fire: the Next Sharp Stick?", "Candle Party," and "Unused Audio Commentary by Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky, Recorded Summer 2002, for the Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring DVD (Platinum Series Extended Version), Part One," all to be found in the early middle. Though a familiarity with candle parties, Howard Zinn, sharp sticks, and other topics satirized in this book is helpful, it's not necessarily required for understanding the jokes. The biggest risk here is binge-reading, as you may exchange audible laughter for the feeling that you are being force-fed an ice cream sundae. If you pace yourself--say no more than four to six pieces at a time--you should have the energy for the final third, including the funny list marathon at the end. Or save a few portions for later when you are really starving for a good laugh. --Leah Weathersby

A note from the author: "Writing is a solitary and often scary enterprise. I alone have heard your silent screams, so I have written this book to help you achieve what everyone who has the courage to live the creative life deserves: complete, utter, slavish adoration and worship. Also: incalculable wealth that insulates you from the concerns of ordinary people."
And there you have it. Fondling Your Muse is John Warner's innovative and slightly insane book of instruction for those who want to write, and those who think they already can. It's packed with quirky (possibly deranged) advice guaranteed to make you laugh out loud in the most embarrassing fashion possible. You know what we mean. It also includes a special chapter entitled "Everything Stephen King Knows About Writing Successfully: Plus Some Things I Know That He Doesn't Because He Isn't That Special." No other book currently available has this chapter!
And Fondling Your Muse provides the kind of wise, insightful guidance that's missing from all of those self-serious, mind-numbingly awful books that promise riches and fame by writing only 20 minutes a day.
Let's say you're looking for a tried-and-true recipe for literary success. Warner reveals all of the best ones, including these succulent concoctions:
* Contemporary Romance Quiche al la Nicholas Sparks ("Tasty with a side of hackneyed potatoes.") * Tom Clancy Techno-Thriller Surprise ("Preparation is usually subcontracted to others.") * Chick-Lit Cacciatore ("Satisfies many, every single time. I can't explain how either.") * Harlequin Romance Salad ("Thoroughly rip bodices, pound prose until purple, and combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl.") * John Grisham's Legal Thriller Stew ("Boil in pot until ingredients bubble over line of believability.") * Contemporary American Literary Fiction Flambe ("Served in smaller and smaller quantities as the years go by.")
Mmmm...tasty.
Even really famous people endorse Warner's work:
"Fondling Your Muse is brilliant in the same way the most distant stars in the galaxy are brilliant. If it's a really clear night and you tilt your head to the side and squint, you sort of see it." -- Dave Eggers
It doesn't get any better than that. So go ahead - get Fondling today!

From Modern Humorist, the funniest, hippest comedy institution to come along since The Onion, My First Presidentiary is a hilarious parody of the rise of George W. Bush, as seen through the eyes of Dubya himself.

During the Republican convention, Modern Humorist produced a wildly successful series, "George W. Bush's Diary" -- written and drawn in the style of a third-grader's class assignment. My First Presidentiary takes off from that, adding the people, events, and screwups that have put their stamp on The Great Pronunciator's rise to power.

Highlights include Dubya's correspondence with his young Mexican penpal, Hector, White House redecorating schemes (a NASCAR motif for the Lincoln Bedroom?), and the deal with Cuba to trade the Florida Keys for three left-handed starters and a closer. Along the way, George receives help from key figures like Dick Cheney, Colin Powell, and Alan Greenspan in the form of hilarious "corrections."

America had a pretty rough time creating this Presidency -- now it's time to laugh at the results.

In theory, there are only two qualifications needed to run for President of the United States: you should be 35 years of age and a natural born U.S. citizen. But what else does one need to be a contender? Whether you're an elephant or a donkey, or whatever animal may be associated with an independent candidate, this book is the key to finding out if you're cut out for the job.
So You Want to Be President? Takes readers from choosing their party affiliation, through the primaries and ultimately to the general election. Along the way quizzes, tests and obstacles test their presidential mettle. In the back of the book is a handy scorecard for readers to track their progress toward 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. During the Primaries, ""candidates"" will be attempting to amass enough delegates to win the nomination. In the general election, ""candidates"" gun for electoral votes. If readers manage to successfully navigate all challenges, they'll win the ultimate prize, the Presidency of the United States... except not really because we're just pretending here.

Ours is a time of profound change that holds the seed of almost unlimited opportunities for those with the vision, courage, and ability to seize them. Swamp Fox Insights dispels the notion that commercializing innovations is a crap shoot - that the only way to be successful is to make a large number of bets and hope for a few monster home runs. Swamp Fox outlines a systematic, risk-managed process to guide leaders in making critical decisions that impact the success of their high-impact companies.
