New York Times bestselling author of The Shiver Trilogy, The Raven Cycle, and The Scorpio Races. Artist. Driver of things with wheels. Avid reader.

All of Maggie Stiefvater's life decisions have been based around her inability to be gainfully employed. Talking to yourself, staring into space, and coming to work in your pajamas are frowned upon when you're a waitress, calligraphy instructor, or technical editor (all of which she's tried), but are highly prized traits in novelists and artists. She's made her living as one or the other since she was 22. She now lives an eccentric life in the middle of nowhere, Virginia with her charmingly straight-laced husband, two kids, two neurotic dogs, and a 1973 Camaro named Loki.

Now, as an adult, I am still very close to my father. The days away weren't the part that influenced our relationship: the days together were.

I've never forgotten that lesson: that I respected that my father liked his work and was good at it, and that I always felt loved and respected myself. I think it's an especially good lesson to learn because American culture shouts at women all the time — be guilty, it howls, for every moment spent away from home; don't you remember your place; do you want your children to be fed jello for dinner by an inept and unequal spouse?

The Stiefvater household is a finely tuned machine made of people who love each other and respect what each member loves. My kids don't need to be told to be quiet when I'm writing music — they know why I do it, and they'll sit quietly under the piano and watch. They don't have to beg me to read a story to them in the evening — I can tell when that's what they'd like, and I'll put aside my writing for a half hour to do it. I don't have to tell Lover I need him to make dinner while I work late; he knows, because he's watching. Likewise, if he's outside chasing down a loose cow, I don't have to guess that it falls to me to make dinner.

I mean, it's not perfect. Timing can be dreadful. But we like each other. That's really all there is to it. (less)

Luck plays such a tiny role in a writers' career — luck might get you published a few months earlier, or might land you with an editor who isn't planning on leaving the publishing house any time soon, or might score you nice placement on the bookstore shelf if your topic is suddenly hot in the news. But luck has nothing to do with a long-term career. In twenty years, the stroke of luck that got you ahead faster than you would have is canceled out by hundreds of events that you've influenced through persistence and skill and constantly paying attention to your surroundings so that bears don't eat you.

Writing stories for other people isn't about luck: it's about learning how to craft a story that other people love as much as you do.

So no, my friend Kent, I will not wish you luck. I will tell you: don't get eaten by bears. Keep practicing. Don't give up. That's really all there is to it. (less)

“You're beautiful and sad," I said finally, not looking at him when I did. "Just like your eyes. You're like a song that I heard when I was a little kid but forgot I knew until I heard it again." For a long moment there was only the whirring sound of the tires on the road, and then Sam said softly, "Thank you.”

Andrea Kulman Hi & thank you for being a friend on Good Reads!

message 3: by Tasha

Tasha I don't usually make the effort to tell people when their books are exceptional, because I know that authors probably hear that a lot...but I have to say that I have been looking for a story like this FOREVER and I'm so excited that someone finally wrote it! I can't wait for the next one.

Tasha, believe me, I'm not sure if other authors feel the same, but I definitely never get tired of hearing from readers! I'm so glad that you loved it and I hope you love BALLAD too -- as soon as I finished BALLAD, I thought it was WAY better than LAMENT, and all of the advance readers so far have agreed! So I hope it lives up to LAMENT for you!

Ellen Sara I loved Lament. :) And as much as I love Luke I was wondering if is there any chance of a Dee and James pairing. Of course you can't really tell me that can you? :) Hope you are having a great weekend. And thanks for writing such a great book!

I'm not sayin' anything but that James is narrating BALLAD, the sequel, and there is kissing involved. I'm not saying by whom! :D

I'm so glad you loved it!

Ellen Sara Oh man what a tease!:) I was already planning on reading it but now I can't wait!

message 10: by Haley

Haley I read Lament in the fall of last year and ever since then I have been so excited to get my hands on Ballad and Shiver. I'm so happy you chose to write about werewolves! Hardly anyone writes about werewolves. Well, not unless they're being rejected for more sparkly and dazzling mythical creatures.... Anyway, have a nice day, and thanks for adding me. =]

Haley I just finished Shiver. I looooved it! While Lament made me laugh, Shiver made me cry. Everything from the cover to the character names, to the ending was perfect. I can't wait for Linger!

Sara Hello Maggie,

So I've finished! Just a few moments ago- still trying to collect myself :P

I LOVED it. I loved it the whole way through.
All I kept thinking to myself was 'finally'. Finally, a love story that is written as skillfully as it is emotional.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing the story of Grace & Sam with the world.

You are awesome!
'Shiver' has filled me with the kind of hope I thought I had lost awhile ago.

-Sara

Terra Ah man, I've read a few comments about someone crying! I hate crying. I am sooooooooo in love with Sam. He's so sweet such a man and a sweet one at that. I mean even though he is a wolf. And even though I did not like Shelby so much, I still felt bad for her. Then with what happened, I cried a bit. So now I am a little passed halfway through and I just want to finish it, but then again, I don't want it to end. Oh and... I am stealing a phrase that Grace's mom said, I laughed out loud, "Have you eaten yet? I'm feeling snacky!" HAHA I just love it! So now I will be telling my husband, I'm feeling snacky! A hint to get me some snackin foods from the store. LOL Do you think there will be a second part to Shiver? I mean I haven't gotten to the end, but I just love the story and the characters. I want more Maggie... MORE!!! hahah keep up the awesome writing!!

message 36: by Katherine (last edited Aug 13, 2009 10:04AM)

Katherine I just wanted to say, that Shiver was the best book that I have read in a long time. Thank you! I actually tried to read it slow; however, I had to know how it ended.

I love the way you write. It's brilliant! The way you made me feel like I was right there in the woods, the way I could actually feel the love and pain between Grace and Sam, and everything else in the book. Parts of this book will definately stay with me.

The breathtaking love between Grace and Sam did make me cry in some parts. Sad tears as well as happy ones. The happy ones came at the end.

Can't wait till Linger comes out. Even though it seems so far away!
