Description:
Joshua Reed knows how to play new kid: hang back, don’t talk too much, become invisible. Things get rough after his dad becomes a recruiter for the US Air Force during the Vietnam War, and they move to a town that’s already lost sons in battle.
Then Joshua rescues Jack from the pound. Jack yanks Joshua from the sidelines to the front lines and before Joshua can help it, he butts heads with Alan Prater, the toughest kid around. Joshua would like to be friends with Ray, but Ray and Prater are cousins, and Prater’s not letting outsiders in.
Joshua soon discovers being a recruiter’s son during an unpopular war doesn’t make fitting in easy. But Jack makes everything okay. With his strange glowing ears and unique ability to understand Joshua’s feelings, Jack is the perfect friend. When late-night disturbances rip through town and everything points back to his beloved dog, Joshua will have to fight for Jack, his family, and his new home.

Description:
At the Meriwether, Florida's famous antebellum hotel off of Hope Springs, nothing is quite as it seems. Secret staircases give way to servants' quarters; hidden tunnels run criss cross under the hotel; and rooms on the top floors sit abandoned, draped in cobwebs and darkness.
None of this scares Allie Jo Jackson; she's lived at The Meriwether her whole life and knows every square inch of the hotel a hundred times over. Nothing surprises her. Nothing, that is, until the first time she spots the enigmatic and beautiful Tara emerging from the springs. Tara's shimmery skin, long flowing hair, and strange penchant for moonlight swims disguise a mysterious secret--and once Allie Jo and her friend Chase learn the truth about Tara, nothing will ever be the same again.

**Putting a special star next to this one for my friends who teach 5th-7th grade because this novel has one of those pitch-perfect middle school voices that don't come along all that often. Watch for it in September!**

| I asked for and received this book for Christmas. I love it. THE MIRACULOUS JOURNEY OF EDWARD TULANE is classic story-telling, a passport to storybookland. It has a magic that so few novels achieve. I read it when it first came out; even upon subsequ...more | |

| DAYS OF BEER is an affectionate look at the author's glory days, in which beer played a central part. Charles Gramlich writes with ease in the manner of a friend telling you his tall tales, all the while making sure you're comfortable in your chair a...more | |

| Loved it. Loved the urgency/dissatisfaction/restlessness that lay just below the surface. Great ending! | |
“When Eddie B. dared me to walk the net bridge over the Elijah Hatchett River where we'd seen an alligator and another kid got bit by a coral snake, I wasn't scared--I just didn't feel like doing it right then.”
