<about>the short version:
Kris Waldherr is an author, illustrator, and designer whose art has been exhibited in the National Museum of Women in the Arts. She is the author of Doomed Queens, The Lover’s Path and The Book of Goddesses, and creator of The Goddess Tarot. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.

the long version:
I'm the author, illustrator and designer of numerous books including Doomed Queens, The Lover's Path and The Book of Goddesses. I also created several oracle decks: the Goddess Tarot, Lover's Path Tarot, the Goddess Inspiration Oracle, and the Anubis Oracle.

I began my publishing career as a children's book illustrator and designer twenty years ago. Since then, my work has expanded considerably. I am fascinated with women's stories, sacred and profane. In my books, I've written about goddesses as well as queens and courtesans.

I have a long-established blog that I post news about my life, publishing, and work on a regular basis at kriswaldherr.com/blog. To learn more about my work, you can also sign up for my newsletter. It offers extra news about my new publications and exhibitions, as well as subscriber-only freebies, raffles and gift offers.

More about my books: The Book of Goddesses was a One Spirit/Book-of-the-Month Club’s Top Ten Most Popular Book. The Book of Goddesses inspired Goddess, a Narada music CD, several illustrated calendars, and The Goddess Tarot, which has over 200,000 copies in print. My picture book retelling of the Persephone myth, Persephone and the Pomegranate, was praised by the New York Times Book Review in a full page review for its “quality of myth and magic,” and by Jean Shinoda Bolen, M.D., author of Goddesses in Everywoman, as “a beautifully done retelling of the major mother-daughter myth.”

I've had illustrations published as greeting cards, book covers, and in magazines. My art has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and England, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts. The strangest thing I've ever heard about my work? That The Goddess Tarot was the most shoplifted item at the Union Square Barnes & Noble.

I live in Brooklyn, where I have a small gallery that doubles as my workspace. It is open to the public for exhibitions and events. I have a toddler-age daughter named Thea. I spend too much time in coffeehouses with her and my husband, the anthropologist Thomas Ross Miller. In an ideal world, I would indulge in more café society. I'd also have a palazzo in Venice and wear velvet gowns in November.</about>

Illicit love, madness, betrayal--it isn’t always good to be the queen

Marie Antoinette, Anne Boleyn, and Mary, Queen of Scots. What did they have in common? For a while they were crowned in gold, cosseted in silk, and flattered by courtiers. But in the end, they spent long nights in dark prison towers and were marched to the scaffold where they surrendered their heads to the executioner. And they are hardly alone in their undignified demises. Throughout history, royal women have had a distressing way of meeting bad ends--dying of starvation, being burned at the stake, or expiring in childbirth while trying desperately to produce an heir. They always had to be on their toes and all too often even devious plotting, miraculous pregnancies, and selling out their sisters was not enough to keep them from forcible consignment to religious orders. From Cleopatra (suicide by asp), to Princess Caroline (suspiciously poisoned on her coronation day), there’s a gory downside to being blue-blooded when you lack a Y chromosome. Kris Waldherr’s elegant little book is a chronicle of the trials and tribulations of queens across the ages, a quirky, funny, utterly macabre tribute to the dark side of female empowerment. Over the course of fifty irresistibly illustrated and too-brief lives, Doomed Queens charts centuries of regal backstabbing and intrigue. We meet well-known figures like Catherine of Aragon, whose happy marriage to Henry VIII ended prematurely when it became clear that she was a starter wife--the first of six. And we meet forgotten queens like Amalasuntha, the notoriously literate Ostrogoth princess who overreached politically and was strangled in her bath. While their ends were bleak, these queens did not die without purpose. Their unfortunate lives are colorful cautionary tales for today’s would-be power brokers--a legacy of worldly and womanly wisdom gathered one spectacular regal ruin at a time.

Filamena Ziani is the much younger sister of the most famous courtesan in sixteenth-century Venice, Tullia Ziani. Orphaned as an infant, Filamena has come of age bent like a branch to her sister's will, sheltered and lonely in the elegant but stifling confines of their palazzo by the sea. Then a dark-haired stranger offers a gift that will change the course of her life forever: a single ripe plum, and an invitation to walk along the lover's path, wherever it may lead.

The Lover's Path, a moving tale of forbidden love, is a feminist epic told in multiple layers. Through a novel combination of Filamena's narrative, famous allegorical love stories from history and mythology, sumptuously ornate illustrations, and "actual" letters to and from Filamena that must be opened to be read, Filomena's path is beautifully described and, finally, stunningly revealed.

Praised by The New York Times Book Review for her "quality of myth and magic," Waldherr brings to life a remarkable period in Venetian history. Her glorious celebration of romance, the feminine spirit, and the power of love to transform will inspire and move readers everywhere.
