I've just arrived home from the mini-tour with Richelle Mead. Dude, Richelle's fans are hardcore. I also got to meet a few fans of my own, which was awesome. Each event was wonderful.

I know today is Friday, but the entire trip was exhausting. We literally saw nothing but airports, our media escorts' cars, the events, and hotel rooms. Unfortunately, on trips like this you can't really do much sightseeing. Richelle's a trooper–she's got something like twenty more days of touring. I don't know how

Good morning! I'm packing and getting ready for the start of the Grand Mini-Voyage tomorrow. It will be very good to see Richelle again, and though I hate traveling (I liked it fine until airports started resembling Kafka nightmares with petty Napoleons at every point) I will enjoy meeting Readers and having several hours to knock off a few books of my own while in transit.

Today is going to be extraordinarily busy. So, a list!

Crossposted to the Deadline Dames. Check 'em out!.

I'm getting ready for the mini-tour and knocking off wordcount on Heaven's Spite, so today we have a list of five things about writing as a career.

1. Writing is a physical act. Yes, you do it sitting in front of a word-processor, or sitting at a desk. That does not mean it is effortless. The sheer brute physical labor of typing eighty to a hundred thousand words for a novel (and let's not even talk about revisions) is hard on the delicate structu

It's chicken-with-head-cut-off time. There's the trip next week and wordcount and ARGH. So, three things today.

* First off, more on the Google Books Settlement. Richard Curtis asks where all the "concerned" people were before all the work was done. More links, of course, as I find them. Feel free to post links in the comments, but keep the shouting/arguing to a minimum, 'kay? Thanks.

* Just finished The Storm of War, which for a one-book history of WWII was magisterial and pretty good. Some of th

I received another communication from the Author's Guild about the Google Book Settlement. It included "Freely forward and post this message," so that's just what I'm doing. Also, Gillian Spraggs (Wolfinthewood) has linked to an objection against the Settlement by Scott E. Gant, as well as some fresh information.

Again, I don't want shouting matches over this here. I offer the links and the communiques from the Guild as a PSA only. And if you do happen to go over to Wolf's journal, please be poli

I've finally got a final itinerary, which means I can announce a mini whirlwind tour, featuring the inimitable Richelle Mead. Oh, and yours truly. Next week we'll be shaking it up in Seattle and California!

Tuesday, August 25th

4pm University Bookstore, Seattle, WA. The University Bookstore is right on the Ave, the street where the Anna Beguines start out.

7pm Borders, Redmond WA. I believe this is a Richelle-only event. She is Pure Awesome. Go and see her!

Wednesday, August 26th

4pm Mrs. Nelson's To

IN the three-things-make-a-post category, because I have no time:

* Listening to Cake while I run actually fixes a lot of problems. Specifically, a mix of Fashion Nugget and Comfort Eagle gets me through a half-hour of running and knocks plot bits loose inside my head. Who'd've thought it? Their renditions of I Will Survive and Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town are particularly toothsome.

* PZ Myers knocks it out of the park again, with Bring Me The Heads Of Penn And Teller. Here's the nut for me

* I'm cutting way back on my Internet usage. Way, way back–to the tune of putting parental controls on my laptop. The timer is working, but not enough. Wireless is just too easy. And with all the upheaval in my personal life lately, the feeling of being "connected" is acquiring a lot of importance–but how "connected" am I if I'm just aimlessly surfing? Work's got to get done, and if it takes this to do it, well, then, this is what it takes.

I feel like an idiot weakling for reducing myself to par

I've mentioned before that my online acquaintance Wolfinthewood (Gillian Spraggs, for those of you just joining us) has turned her considerable academic talents to the Google Book Settlement. She has a paper explaining aspects of the settlement you can download in PDF. While I am not sure I agree with her contention that the settlement may not be such a hot idea (again, I will NOT argue about it here) there's something about this that is causing me a great deal of concern.

Wolf mentioned last wee
