About this author

George Mastras has worked as a criminal investigator for the public defender service, a counselor at a maximum security juvenile correctional facility, and a litigator in New York and Los Angeles. After ten years of practicing law, he quit his job, sold his belongings, and spent several years backpacking around the globe and trekking in the Himalayas, Karakorams, and Hindu Kush. Aside from writing fiction, he has worked as a screenwriter and currently writes for the Emmy Award-winning drama Breaking Bad, for which he was nominated for a Writers Guild Award in 2008. Born in Boston, he is a graduate of Yale, UCLA Law, and Outward Bound. He was awarded the competitive Disney-ABC Writing Fellowship for Television Drama in 2005. He lives in Los...more


PEN Center USA has officially announced that George Mastras has won the 2009 PEN USA Literary Award in the Teleplay category for his episode of Breaking Bad entitled "Crazy Handful of Nothin'." Mastras, also a novelist and author of FIDALI'S WAY (Scribner 2009), will receive the honor in a ceremonly to take place on December 2nd in Beverly Hills, California.
