About this author

P.W. (Paul) Catanese is the author of fantasy-adventure novels (published by Aladdin/Simon & Schuster). He has over a half-million books in print, audio books on the way for all of his novels, and foreign translations for his new series, The Books of Umber. A crisp style, fast pacing, interesting characters and vivid descriptions have made him a favorite with everyone from reluctant readers to teachers to adults seeking a thrilling escape.

In its starred review, Publisher's Weekly said “Catanese dazzles in the first of the planned Books of Umber...Catanese packs a lot into the book: rich characterizations, well-choreographed action sequences and genuinely surprising twists at the end. An auspicious start to the series.”

More of P.W.'s books…
“The worm hissed. "You said it couldn't see!" shouted Oates, forgetting Umber's instruction to be silent. He shook a fist. "We all heard it, Umber! You specifically said, it couldn't see!"
"I know-isn't it wonderful to learn something new?" Umber laughed.”
P.W. Catanese, Happenstance Found

“Once an idea is out and about, it can't be called back, silenced or erased. You can't contain it, any more than you could put the head of a dandelion back together after the wind has scattered its seeds.”
P.W. Catanese, Happenstance Found

“Enjoy yourselves. And Hap: Don't let Umber near the arrows and bows; he's liable to shoot himself in the nose." Dodd grinned and snapped the reins, and the carriage rolled away.
Umber sniffed. "One of his lesser poems. Come, Hap.”

Polls

What book shall we read in July?
I have chosen books that are getting a lot of attention, or the authors have other Newbery honors, and were published in January and February. My hope is that a lot of libraries might have them in their shelves by now.

If you get the chance, check and see what your library has before you vote.

Tripleguess Wow, I'm honored! Thank you for adding me as a friend!

I'm a picky reader btw, and I hesitate to pick up a book if it seems the author enjoys torturing characters/readers X) but I always feel safe with yours. Thank you very much for sharing your stories. =)
