Don't insist on the first draft being good. That will paralyse you forever. In fact, insist on the first draft being as rough as a bear's arse. Insist on it being an incoherent fucking mess. It's not supposed to be good. It's supposed to be *outside of you.* The first victory is hard but simple: get it outside of your head and down on a page. Right now, you're constipated by expectation. Okay, you probably don't want me to continue with that metaphor. But just get the ideas out of you and on a page where you can see them, in broken sentences and stick figures if you like. Fix it later, once it's outside of your head where you can see it.(less)

I can't stand seeing or hearing myself, frankly. The filmmakers did send me a cut that was just (most of) the interviews -- I kind of got suckered into agreeing to look at that, I think, because it was headed up with a personal message from Dame Helen Mirren. And, come on. You would have looked at that too.

You know what it was like? It was like a long preview of your own funeral service. It was really oddly unsettling.(less)

Thomas Pynchon’s AGAINST THE DAY is a book that is almost impossible to finish. In many ways, it defeats the point of finishing it. It’s more than a thousand pages long, and each individual scene is pretty much the size of a novella. It’s a novel that you can dip into like an encyclopedia. It’s set between 1893 and World War I, and it came out in 2006. It’s in no way current. But I’m sitting do...

More of Warren's books…
“Did you ever want to set someone's head on fire, just to see what it looked like? Did you ever stand in the street and think to yourself, I could make that nun go blind just by giving her a kiss? Did you ever lay out plans for stitching babies and stray cats into a Perfect New Human? Did you ever stand naked surrounded by people who want your gleaming sperm, squirting frankincense, soma and testosterone from every pore? If so, then you're the bastard who stole my drugs Friday night. And I'll find you. Oh, yes.”
Warren Ellis, Transmetropolitan, Vol. 5: Lonely City

“Drinking is fun! It makes me feel horrible and sexy!”
Warren Ellis

“By four o'clock, I've discounted suicide in favor of killing everyone else in the entire world instead.”
