JUMP IN. HANG ON.

Tom is a highly imaginative Christy Award-winning author from Tyndale House Publishers. His first novel, "Vanish" won the Operation First Novel Contest sponsored by the Christian Writers Guild and Tyndale House. Released in June 2008, "Vanish" went on to win a Christy Award in the Visionary category. His follow up sequel, "Valley of the Shadow" was released in June of 2009. His third novel, "Beckon" is due out in early 2011.

It is important to maintain a realistic view of one's own skill sets as a writer. Friends and family will try to be too kind. Find a writers group in your area or online where you can get critical input on your writing.

Also, understand that there are two separate skill sets you need to develop. One is writing... all the technical and artistic elements of sentence structure, grammar, phrasing, voice etc. The other skill is story-telling. Learn what elements make up a good plot and what makes good, memorable characters. Learn how to build a story that captures and keeps your reader's interest.

Some people are great story-tellers but poor writers. Others can write well but don't know how to craft a good story. As I said, they are two separate skill sets and you must master both of them if you want to be successful.(less)
