About this author

Mike Reeves-McMillan has worked as a book editor, technical writer, corporate trainer, IT consultant and hypnotherapist.

He lives in Auckland, New Zealand.

Phoenix Rising by Philippa Ballantine
" Quit on page 22.

My last shot at steampunk. It always seems more interested in exploring the minute details of incomprehensible gadgets than the inner workings of the characters. Since engaging characters are a reading priority of mine, I declare g... "

Phoenix Rising by Philippa Ballantine
" The archivist's name is Books! Get it? Get it?

I'm always worried when an author (or authors, in this case) can't avoid a cheap pun, and this one is very cheap. It doesn't usually bode well for the imagination of said authors. They have plenty of... "

Phoenix Rising by Philippa Ballantine
" Poor writing (too much tell, not enough show), poor editing, poor pacing, lazy characterizations, and a plot that managed, somehow, to be both absurd and boring. The dialogue desperately tried to be witty but always fell short.

Also, Books and Brau... "

The Janus Affair by Philippa Ballantine
" As the second Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences Novel, The Janus Affair more than delivers on the promise of last year's Phoenix Rising, even if the story at the heart of it isn't quite as strong. With the preliminaries out of the way, Ballantine &... "

I really enjoyed the Podiobooks version of Brave Men Run, so when Matthew Wayne Selznick was running a survey on whether to write more in the setting I voted "yes" and picked up this collection of short stories (by other authors, in his setting) off...more

Like the first book in the Dagmar series (This is Not a Game), and like some of William Gibson's recent stuff, this is not so much science fiction as technothriller - our present-day world, or maybe one a couple of years in the future, already being...more

“The wrong thing being?” asks Halwaz.
“Closing up their source, of course,” you say, in a tone which implies, “Did you think I was merely talking about their sacrificing small fuzzy animals in an attempt to bring back ancient evil gods?”
Mike Reeves-McMillan, Gu

“If you have enough book space, I don't want to talk to you.”
Terry Pratchett

“Blessings be on this house," Granny said, perfunctorily. It was always a good opening remark for a witch. It concentrated people's minds on what other things might be on this house.”
Terry Pratchett, Witches Abroad

“There isn't a way things should be. There's just what happens, and what we do.”
Terry Pratchett, A Hat Full of Sky

“Using a metaphor in front of a man as unimaginative as Ridcully was like a
red flag to a bu... was like putting something very annoying in front of
someone who was annoyed by it.”
Terry Pratchett, Lords and Ladies

“What's a philosopher?' said Brutha.
Someone who's bright enough to find a job with no heavy lifting,' said a voice in his head.”
Terry Pratchett, Small Gods
