About this author

I am a writer, but I'm here on Goodreads to talk about books, as I've been a passionate reader as long as I've been a writer--since early childhood.

I'm not going to rate books--there are too many variables. I'd rather talk about the reading experience. My 'reviews' of my books are confined to the writing process.

(We are busy at work on the three others in the series.)

In July, A SWORD NAMED TRUTH, from DAW, more in the Sartorias-deles world. It's the "other half" of A STRANGER TO COMMAND.

Working on that, its sequel, and also on LHIND THE SPY, which I'd like to release in March or so.

The favorites to write are the ones that wrote themselves, my subconscious having done all the work beforehand without my knowing--so all I had to do was "live" it while the words channeled through my fingers. I call those "white fire" stories because the story so burns in me I'm pretty much *there*, not so much *here*, until they are done. And they go fast, like mere weeks.

Among those were CORONETS AND STEEL, FLEEING PEACE, THE SPY PRINCESS, SENRID (the latter three when I was very young) and THE TROUBLE WITH KINGS. CROWN DUEL came in two spurts, a couple of years apart.(less)

“But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.”
George Eliot, Middlemarch

“The Aristocrat

The Devil is a gentleman, and asks you down to stay
At his little place at What'sitsname (it isn't far away).
They say the sport is splendid; there is always something new,
And fairy scenes, and fearful feats that none but he can do;
He can shoot the feathered cherubs if they fly on the estate,
Or fish for Father Neptune with the mermaids for a bait;
He scaled amid the staggering stars that precipice, the sky,
And blew his trumpet above heaven, and got by mastery
The starry crown of God Himself, and shoved it on the shelf;
But the Devil is a gentleman, and doesn't brag himself.

O blind your eyes and break your heart and hack your hand away,
And lose your love and shave your head; but do not go to stay
At the little place in What'sitsname where folks are rich and clever;
The golden and the goodly house, where things grow worse for ever;
There are things you need not know of, though you live and die in vain,
There are souls more sick of pleasure than you are sick of pain;
There is a game of April Fool that's played behind its door,
Where the fool remains for ever and the April comes no more,
Where the splendour of the daylight grows drearier than the dark,
And life droops like a vulture that once was such a lark:
And that is the Blue Devil that once was the Blue Bird;
For the Devil is a gentleman, and doesn't keep his word.”
G.K. Chesterton, Collected Works Volume 10

lilly bear ♡ I just wanted you to know that Crown Duel is my absolute favourite book. It's always the first suggestion on my lips when someone asks for a recommendation. Thank you so much for writing something that is so dear to me :)

Sherwood Smith Hey, thank YOU! :-)

Maisoon Al-mahrouqi Thank you for accepting my request! Crown Duel is next on my Kindle To-Read list, a friend of mine recommended it to me.
I was wondering, do you read Terry Pratchett, author of the Diskworld series?

I love Terry Pratchett!

Michael And good to see you. Your author photo looks positively badass; but then, you are, so fair enough.

I am always here in NYC! (Well, Brooklyn, but close enough.)

Sherwood Smith Well, I was 27 when that was taken--but it scrunched down well for the icon, so I thought, why not!

Sweetie Sherwood, thanks for accepting request :D
Looking forward to enjoying your books, have seen good reviews.

Sherwood Smith Looking forward to yours as well!

Maria Freeman Hi, I am attempting to read all of your books and I was wondering if you had a suggested order in which I should try to read them. Thanks.

Sherwood Smith That's sort of complicated--the YA ones or the adult ones? In publication order or in time, if you mean the ones set on Sartorias deles? For the latter, there is a chart on my webpage showing where the SD ones fit together:

Sherwood Smith Thank you! (I don't know if you know this, or would care, but there are several scenes from Vidanric's point of view at the end of the e-book edition.)

Ariana Thanks for adding me back! :)
