Preface

COLLECTED here from Homeward, Songs by the Way, The Earth Breath, and The Divine Vision, with such new verses as I thought of equal mood, this book holds what poetry of mine I would wish my friends to read. I have omitted what in colder hours seemed to me to have failed to preserve some heat of the imagination; but in that colder mood I have made but slight revision of those retained. However imperfect they seemed, I did not feel that I could in after hours melt and remould and make perfect the form if I was unable to do so in the intensity of conception, when I was in those heavens we breathe for a moment and then find they are not for our clay. When I first discovered for myself how near was the King in His beauty I thought I would be the singer of the happiest songs. Forgive me, Spirit of my spirit, for this, that I have found it easier to read the mystery told in tears and understood Thee better in sorrow than in joy; that, though I would not, I have made the way seem thorny, and have wandered in too many byways, imagining myself into moods which held Thee not. I should have parted the true from the false, but I have not yet passed away from myself who am in the words of this book. Time is a swift winnower, and that he will do quickly for me.

A.

George William Russell, better known as Æ (1867-1935), mystic, poet, painter, journalist, editor, and practical rural economist, was a pivotal figure in the Irish literary revival and in the emergence of modern Ireland. From the beginning of the twentieth century he formed life-long friendships with W. B. Yeats, George Moore, Lord Dunsany, James Stephens, Stephen Mackenna (translator of the Enneads of Plotinus), James Joyce, and other writers, thinkers, and artists, and was closely associated with the Irish National Theatre Society (later the Abbey Theatre). Russell's influence was as extensive in practical and political affairs as it was in the more intimate spiritual domain. The length and breadth of his thinking on the social issues of his day, which are only heightened in ours, is evident in this present work. This exhaustive and unsurpassed bibliography of the works of George William Russell, includes, in addition to a chronological listing of all his published written works, Notes on his Paintings and Portraits by Alan Denson, a Foreword by Padraic Colum, Reminiscences of Æ by M. J. Bonn, and a Note on Æ and Painting by Thomas Bodkin. Of the compiler, Alan Denson, the late Oliver St John Gogarty wrote: 'I do not know anyone who is better equipped to write about Æ.' Mr. Denson also edited The Letters of Æ (available again from Coracle Press).

The present volume is a collection of intimate and casual letters written by Æ to the late Kingsley Porter and his wife Lucy. Mrs. Porter introduces the letters with a preface telling of Æ's visits to their home, Glenveagh Castle in Ireland. Here is the real Æ - allowing his mind to play over personalities and the contemporary scene with freedom and spontaneity. His comments on American politics, economics, Prohibition, and the Depression, are witty and penetrating. Equally amusing is his description of the scene in England. The political situation in Ireland, on the other hand, filled him with anxiety, and one sees in these letters his deep love of Ireland - the hills, rocks, and the sea, even the 'Irish air'. He writes also of his own work - of the process of creating The Avatars, which proved to be his last book of prose; of his painting, and of his friends - Yeats, Frank O'Connor and the rest. In American, where Æ charmed hundreds of audiences, these pointed comments on affairs, and on the way in which he worked, will find many interested readers. In the literature by and about Æ, as it grows up, this collection should have a distinctive place. I believe the only good news of any interest does not come from the great cities or from councils of state, but from some lonely watcher on the hills who has had a momentous glimpse of infinitude and felt the universe rushing at him If ever in the future cycles I become a divinity a hundred million years from this and have charge of a planet, I will create plenty of lovely people. It will be the aesthetic planet, and ugliness will be a crime.
