It's fascinating; like many, Bettie drew me in. Now some of the mystery is dispelled. Why not more stars? Well, this is an older book that I think contains healthy doses of speculation. It also has a disjointed feeling when reading, at times.

3.5 stars, actually.
Sherry Roit and 100 other people liked Kemper's review of The Things They Carried:
The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien
"It’d be a bad idea to challenge Tim O’Brien to a round of Truth-Or-Dare because he’d find a way to pick Truth, launch into a story, recant it, then make you think he really chose Dare, but in the end, you’ll be pretty sure he actually told you the..." Read more of this review »

Profound. Because it's true ...

Sherry Roit and 126 other people liked Angela M's review of Joyland:
Joyland by Stephen King
"If I ever were to meet Stephen King, I imagine that the conversation would go something like this:

A: Mr. King, what a pleasure it is to meet you. I’m glad to have this opportunity because I owe you an apology.

SK: An apology? We don’t even know eac..." Read more of this review »

Marilyn Monroe
“I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.”
Marilyn Monroe

Nora Ephron
“I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
Nora Ephron, When Harry Met Sally

Ernest Hemingway
“There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”
Ernest Hemingway

Kurt Vonnegut
“If you want to really hurt you parents, and you don't have the nerve to be gay, the least you can do is go into the arts. I'm not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven's sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possible can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.”
Kurt Vonnegut, A Man Without a Country

Neil Gaiman
“Stories may well be lies, but they are good lies that say true things, and which can sometimes pay the rent.”
Neil Gaiman
