about this author
Born in Stamford, Connecticut in the 1950s, I grew up in Ithaca, NY. I was trained originally as an anthropologist (Smith College 1975), then did an MA in English at Boston College. I started writing in earnest in 1995, four years after earning a Ph.D. in English from Boston University, where I was a University Fellow. In 1997, I started a low-residency MFA in Writing Program at Vermont College. At the same time, I was teaching full-time in the Expository Writing Program at Harvard. Before coming to the University of Rhode Island, where I am soon to be the Interim Director of Women's Studies, I taught literature, drama, feminist theory, fiction, and creative nonfiction at Holy Cross, Tufts, Harvard, and Brown. I'm currently working on a novel about secrets.
