| So many mixed emotions. It seems as if Safran wants to hold the reader at arm's length, much as 9-year-old Oscar holds the world. Often, I had no idea who was speaking, or even what was being said. But the incredible poetry, and the tragedy, of this...more | |

What I have decided on my list is to just add books that have touched me in a special way and this is one of them. A brilliant book that is far beyond Lamb's novel She's Come Undone. Sadly it is also far far better than the next, The Hour I First Believed. Here, a man researches his recent origins, trying to find from the secrets of his family his own fears about reaching out to others. Sounds boring, maybe, but with a schizophrenic brother and a grandfather who is an egotistical piece of work, it is filled with humor and insight. My favorite book in years!
