About this author

Mary Akers' fiction frequently focuses on the intersections between art and science, including such topics as diverse and timely as the environmental movement and the struggle for human and animal rights. She is a co-founder of the Institute for Tropical Marine Ecology, a study abroad marine ecology program originally located in Roseau, Dominica and in her spare time she enjoys snorkeling, hiking, backpacking, mountaineering, and snowshoeing. She has worked as a bookbinder in Colonial Williamsburg, a potter on Historic Jamestown Island, an art teacher, a fabric seller, and a cook in a nursing home. Although raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains—which she will always call home—she currently lives in Western New York with her husband and three c...more

My Dear Teen Me letter goes live today at the website devoted to authors writing to their teen selves. Mine turned into a very personal letter, one that scares me to share, but if I've learned anything in my years of writing that probably means that it's good, that I've said something important.

Here's the letter (below) and the link Dear Teen Me Thanks for reading.

Dear Teen Me,

Radical Gratitude and other life lessons learned in Siberia (Nonfiction)
1 chapters   —   updated Mar 29, 2010 04:34pm
Description: Reminiscent of Viktor Frankel’s classic, Man’s Search for Meaning, this extraordinary book melds the unfolding story of survival against the odds with the practical wisdom 5-year-old Andrew gained while coming to terms with his new home; with its dramatic landscape and endless challenges. In amongst the pain are moments of great beauty – breathtaking northern lights, the appearance of the first butterfly after the long months of winter, the unexpected kindness of strangers who risked everything to be kind. It was these experiences that inspired Andrew to become a psychotherapist, and to devote his life to helping others.

Thank you for inviting me to be your friend. Your book looks interesting and I will add it to my reading list. When you get a chance, and when you need a humorous lift of laughter from this crazy economy, try checking out my website, www.laughterawbd.com and read my book of essays on everyday common living (You will identify with and find yourself among my many zany friends and family), Laughter: A Woman's Best Defense. Rosemary Mary, your book sounds marvelous. My best wishes on the launch.

How lovely that you worked in Colonial Williamburg and Jamestown. I treasure the trip there with my younger daughter years ago. She wore her "American Girl" colonial dress when we dined at a tavern. Just last night I was remembering how sweet and beautiful she looked by candlelight as we stepped back in time.
