I love to write and draw. I’ve been writing stories and drawing cartoons ever since I was a little kid. My teachers in school often encouraged me to move beyond cartoons into more respected forms of art, so I figure that as soon as I find a more respected form of art, I’ll definitely drop the cartooning.

Before I started writing and illustrating books, I worked for many years in libraries, so it’s a really nice feeling seeing my books in libraries and schools and bookstores. I consider it a great achievement knowing that all over the world hard-working librarians are cataloguing my books. I much prefer creating books over cataloguing them, and besides, I was a really lousy cataloguer.

Recently I had the delightful opportunity to teach a picture book writing workshop to some high school students in St. Catharines. To say that I was terrified of the whole experience is putting it mildly. I had never presented a writing workshop for high school students before.
