My aunt was into polygamy with 12 children - 6 in the church and 6 in polygamy. She had a son who was a stake president who hired all the seminary teachers for the church (he hired me as well); she also had a son who was raised in polygamy who broke away and became a bishop and seminary teacher later on. I served in many executive positions in the church as well as teacher of youth and adults. I wrote a popular book that exploded me into the speaking circuit and I spoke to women's conferences, youth conferences, Laurel conferences, and parent conferences, etc., all over the western United States and Canada. I was about as perfect as anyone could be and totally unhappy. I lived as a perfectionist because in reality I felt shamed, useless, unworthy, a failure, and like I was another King David who wasn't worthy of exaltation. I thought of taking my life by driving in front of a big truck, that when I was busier than ever serving in the church as Relief Society President in a ward with 80% turnover which had very poor (living in one room dirt floor cabins) to the very wealthy.
Men are truly held up as worthy, while women are to look up to them for approval, guidance, and financial support. I was a stay at home mom with my 9 children (7 of whom were born in 4 years); did the total Mormon thing of making all my food from scratch, making all of our clothes, did a garden, canned, put a two years' supply away, and teaching my children the scriptures and gospel. All this time, I never felt worthy. I felt like a second class citizen. And yes, the church may say they don't practice polygamy, but they practice spiritual polygamy in the temples all the time. Men are sealed to second, third, fourth.... wives. Women never have that privilege. And Section 132 D&C is still very much intact. And in fact, the leaders of the church practiced polygamy themselves after the Manifesto in 1890 (until about 1904) when there was sort of another manifesto proclamation. Leaders were constantly in hiding because of living the doctrine. My own aunt divorced her husband in 1953 to save him from going to prison when the State Attorney General came to visit my mom (her sister was the polygamist) to see where my Uncle was. He was on his way to prison.
Today, UT doesn't even put polygamists in jail. They break the law and nothing is done. Children are massively abused in the polygamy cults. The fathers put their crying babies under running water to stop them from crying. My heart breaks when I hear of all these horrible things that are practiced in the secret of their own homes.
And yes, Joseph Smith married 33 wives - two were under 18. One was only 14 and he was 39. Ugh! Poor girl, can't even imagine what that was like - I was that age when I was abused by my seminary teacher. He also married other men's wives and lived with them sexually. And Brigham Young was no different.
I did have two bishops who treated me with respect, but several who did not. I know women who have to live on Prozac to keep sane enough to give their husbands what they feel they have to. I don't believe God loves his daughters any less than his sons, but the fruits of the church doesn't show that.(less) "

This was a unique book. I enjoyed this one more than some of her past books/tapes. If you believe in reincarnation, it's an exciting read. If you don't, it's still very interesting.

I loved, loved, loved the book. It gave refreshing and new information that spoke to my heart. The book was first print and hadn't been totally proofed, but that has now been done and new printing.
