The F Word: Failure is this year’s theme, with speakers invited to reflect on times in their careers where things have fallen apart, deadlines went out the window and defeat was snatched from the jaws of victory. Rather than revel in what didn’t work, CBI is asking how failure can be learned from and used to create something better. The weekend will be opened by Eoin Colfer, Ireland’s third Laureate na nÓg, who will give his first public address as part of the conference.

This year’s line-up includes famous names and new talents, including illustrators such as David Roberts, whose Dirty Bertie books will be familiar to many, and David Mackintosh, whose illustration of a boy mowing loop-the-loops into a lawn is used on our conference poster to reflect our theme of failure, and show that making mistakes often leads to moments of beautiful creativity.

The annual CBI conference is a weekend-long celebration of the very best in books for young people from home and abroad.

Featuring some of the most exciting names in writing, illustration, publishing and criticism, this relaxed and friendly event is an opportunity for teachers, booksellers, librarians, academics, artists and other professionals – or anyone else with a passion for children’s literature – to meet old favourites and discover new voices.

Emirates Airline Festival of Literature is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, The Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Event 068 Friday 7 March 17:00-18:00

Al Ras 2

How daunting a task is it to re-create an established literary or TV hero, and to add something new for today’s audience?

TV comedy writer, producer and performer Charlie Higson published the first in his best-selling Young James Bond series in 2005. Best-known for his hugely successful Artemis Fowl series, Eoin Colfer’s literary re-imagining was in writing an ebook featuring that much-loved timelord, the Doctor. Philip Reeve, award-winning author of the Mortal Engines series, uses his vivid imagination to dive into the making of a myth: Here Lies Arthur. Is imagination all you need to make a hero live again?

Al Baraha 3

Now is the chance for you and your table of dinner guests to spend the evening in the company of one of our visiting writers, working together to crack the clues and discover Who Did It? As a murder is enacted before your very eyes, you are challenged to reveal who had the motive and opportunity to commit the dastardly crime and to gather the clues that lead you to your conclusion.

Join crime-writers and authors of fantasy, romance, thrillers and popular fiction who, along with poets, journalists, scientists and historians, will be mingling with their readers to help solve the ‘crime of the festival’. Not only an intellectual feast, a 3-course dinner will also be served. Happy sleuthing!

Sincere thanks to Chris McDermott for writing, and Rodger Talty and Dubai Drama Group for staging the ‘murder’.
