About this author

Sharon J Bolton was born and brought up in Lancashire, the eldest of three daughters. As a child, she dreamed of becoming an actress and a dancer, studying ballet, tap and jazz from a young age and reading drama at Loughborough University.

She spent her early career in marketing and PR before returning to full-time education to study for a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at Warwick University, where she met her husband, Andrew. They moved to London and Sharon held a number of PR posts in the City. She left the City to work freelance, to start a family and to write.

She and Andrew now live in a village in the Chiltern Hills, not far from Oxford, with their son and the latest addition to the family: Lupe, the lop-eared lurcher. Her dai...more

As the Olympics drew to its sad but inevitable conclusion, I saw
an interview with the performance director of the cycling squad,
Dave Brailsford, when he was asked to explain his team's
jaw-dropping success at the games. His response both impressed and
intrigued me, to the extent that I immediately started wondering
how it could be applied to the task uppermost in my mind at the
time - finishing a b...

Blueeyedboy

This is a very clever book; arguably the cleverest of all Harris’s books and almost certainly too clever for the likes of me. Because I struggled with it, if I’m honest.

Sadly, I didn't finish this book. As a piece of social history, it's interesting enough. It follows the investigation into a (real life) tragedy at a bomb shelter in Bethnal Green during the war, the POV switching from that of several of the survivor...more

Jigs & Reels: Stories

I'm not a big fan of the short story genre, but these are pretty good. Most of them, as you'd expect with Joanne Harris, have supernatural undertones and there are certainly a lot of original ideas. I particularly liked one about a mermaid, and anoth...more

More of S. J.'s books…
“Every time Tom was tempted to turn back, he made himself think of his brother. Joe, who he sometimes thought had been sent to earth to make his life miserable, who had been a complete pain from the day he was born, who was always getting his own way and who he fantasized about killing at least once a week. Joe, who he really didn't think he could live the rest of his life without.”

“He’ll never know what it would be like, to wake up beside her.”
S.J. Bolton, Dead Scared

“Scared by the noise, Millie looked down at her brothers. Then she held out both arms and Tom's stomach turned cold. She was going to jump to him, like she did from the back of the sofa. She was going to jump, confident that he'd catch her, like he always did.”
