Anyone who reads much contemporary American poetry must be struck by its variety of form, its searching for new language and its attempt to push meaning to the utmost. All these essays are related, with understandable differences in approach, to the tradition of experiment in American verse and fiction. In each one, a single writer is analysed and evaluated and seen within the framework of the American literary tradition, which has been concerned, from Poe to Wallace Stevens with the same kinds of problem and has even hinted at similar solutions. In a final piece, Arthur Mizener brilliantly extends this concept of experiment to fiction, with a subtle examination of the novels and stories of Hemingway.
