These six essays were delivered as lectures to the American Embassy in London in 1959 and sponsored by the United States Information Service. The success of the collection of essays entitles The Young Rebel in American Literature, also edited by Carl Bode, suggested that these too should be gathered together and made available to a wider audience.

Anyone who reads much contemporary American poetry must be struck by its variety of form, its searching for new language and its attempt to push meaning to the utmost. All these essays are related, with understandable differences in approach, to the tradition of experiment in American verse and fiction. In each one, a single writer is analysed and evaluated and seen within the framework of the American literary tradition, which has been concerned, from Poe to Wallace Stevens with the same kinds of problem and has even hinted at similar solutions. In a final piece, Arthur Mizener brilliantly extends this concept of experiment to fiction, with a subtle examination of the novels and stories of Hemingway.

Contents:
A word of Explanation
The American Literary Dilemma and Edgar Allan Poe by Robert E, Spiller
Whitman : The Balance of Yawp by A.

Through his selection and organization of, and commentary on, the documents and illustrations in this anthology Carl Bode gives his readers a vivid picture of American civilization and popular culture of the 1850s. The twenty-eight selections from contemporary documents and thirty illustrations are divided into seven sections covering various aspects of the American experience—the character of the people and country, home life, work, education, religion, pleasures of life, and slavery.

Americans in the 1850s, the documents show, were worse off physically and better off mentally than they are today. They felt more secure because they had more absolutes than we do today. Men in the earlier era trusted in God and in the great social institutions of church, family, school, and country. Yet the 1850s were by no means a bucolic interlude before the Civil War, as Bode makes clear, and the revealing look at the period given here is both rich and rewarding.

Although he is the leading biographer of Mencken and now writes for the paper Mencken himself once wrote for, Carl Bode is his own man before a typewriter and, as this collection shows, a singularly acute observer of popular culture.

In his preface to this first collection of his popular newspaper columns written for the Washington Post and the Baltimore Evening Sun, Carl Bode says about the columns that in their background is “a mixed bag of facts: that I teach American literature at the University of Maryland in College Park; that I divide much of my off-campus time between Washington and Baltimore; that both as a writer and a teacher I’m attracted by two dizzyingly different literary rebels, Henry David Thoreau and H. L. Mencken; that I am delighted by my students and bemused by their ways; and that I’m fascinated by the popular culture of our times as it shifts and sashays around.”

Readers who relish the human comedy in its American mode will especially enjoy this collection of pieces by an eminent student of our civilization who wears his learning lightly.
