In alternating chapters, Zapatista leader Subcomandante Marcos and the consistently excellent Paco Ignacio Taibo II create an uproarious murder mystery with two intersecting story lines.

The chapters written by the famously masked Marcos originate in the mountains of Chiapas, Mexico. There, the fictional "Subcomandante Marcos" assigns Elias Contreras-an odd but charming mountain man-to travel to Mexico City in search of an elusive and hideous murderer named Morales.

The second story line, penned by Taibo, stars his famous series detective Hector Belascoaran Shayne. Hector guzzles Coca-Cola and smokes cigarettes furiously amidst his philosophical and always charming approach to investigating crimes-in this case, the search for his own "Morales."

The two stories collide absurdly and dramatically in the urban sprawl of Mexico City. The ugly history of the city's political violence rears its head, and both detectives find themselves in an unpredictable dance of death with forces at once criminal, historical, and political.

Once again sharing the wisdom of Old Man Antonio and his Mayan heritage, Subcomandante Marcos tells two folktales from the Zapatista rebellion against the Mexican Government.

"The Story of the Sword" is an ancient parable that demonstrates how the indigenous peoples of Mexico can finally defeat the European invader. The tree, for instance, tried to fight the sword, but was defeated. The stone likewise tried to fight the sword, but was defeated. But not the water. "It follows its own road, it wraps itself around the sword and, without doing anything, it arrives at the river that will carry it to the great water where the greatest of gods cure themselves of thirst, those gods that birthed the world, the first ones."

"The Story of Questions" relates how two gods, Ik'al and Votan, wander the earth wrapped forever in each other's arms. These two gods are the Ying and the Yang, the yes and the no, the night and the day of the Mayan universe. Antonio says, "When they got here they made themselves one and gave themselves the name of Zapata."

Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska and Native American poet Simon Ortiz contribute commentary to explain the significance of the Zapatista Rebellion to the 21st Century. They also discuss the use of folklore and artistic expression to expand our understanding of political thought.

Well-known Mexican artists Domitila Dominguez and Antonio Ramirez-co-directors of the Colectivo Callejero in Guadalajara-each illustrated one of the stories. The Colectivo is dedicated to expanding the understanding of revolutionary thought through artistic expression.

This beautiful full-colored edition-the successor to The Story of Colors that received international notoriety when the National Endowment for the Arts rescinded funding for its publication-will serve equally well as a coffee table book as well as a serious read for lovers of Latin American literature.

This "subversive" book is now available in paperback! When the NEA -rescinded funding for The Story of Colors, the news hit the cover of the New York Times and made the book an instant bestseller. But far from being subversive, this beautifully illustrated folktale teaches us all about the value of diversity. Old man Antonio tells how a long time ago the world was just black and white and gray. This bored the gods, so they went looking for bright colors and they found them in the most peculiar places!

No one exactly knows who -Subcomandante Marcos is, but since New Year's Day 1994, when the Zapatistas declared war on the Mexican government, he has become a post-modern revolutionary hero.

Voice of Fire presents the critical communiqués and perspectives of the first guerrilla movement to emerge in Latin America in the post-Cold War era. This book puts us inside the minds of Indigenous peoples and Mexicans who are raising fundamental questions about the current political and social order in North America. Subcomandante Marcos' commentaries are written with a passion and commitment reminiscent of Eduardo Galeano's Open Veins of Latin America. [Roger Burbach author of Fire in the Americas] Originally published in 1994 (and reissued in 2000 with a new afterword) this was one of the first books to both print the early EZLN communiques, and interview some of the major players including Commandante Ramona and Major Ana Maria. A classic slice of history in the making, with as many vital lessons for us today as a decade ago.

In this work, Subcomandante Marcos does a balancing of the books, a review of sorts, that looks at losses and gains, from the beginning of the Zapatista movement -- really since before it came into being -- until present time, and actually goes beyond that. It outlines the dilemnas that will decide its future, and not just of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (ELZN in Spanish), but of Marcos himself and his leadership.

This interview is the result of a story first published in the magazine Gatopardo called "Retrato Radical," or "Radical Potrait (Dec 2007/Jan 2008 edition)" by Laura Castellanos, with photos by Ricardo Trabulsi. This book compiles two interviews with Marcos done in Mexico City and Chiapas in October 2007 where Marcos reflects on the reasons behind the guerrilla's isolation, its break with Mexico's leftist politicians and progressives, and the anti-insurgency strategy visited on the Zapatista communities.

Marcos reviews his own personal history, that of the ELZN, and responds to his critics: all will find in this book a response. He also speaks for the first time about Cuban leader Fidel Castro, Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez, Bolivian president Evo Morales, Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kichner y the Colombian paramilitary group FARC. Additionally, he opens up a little to talk about himself, almost intimately, with his well-known irony and humor.

"Corte de Caja" weaves in the photographs that show Marcos posing for the first time in his 14 years in the public eye. His likeness on the cover of Gatopardo caused a commotion. Even though Marcos had asserted the Zapatistas were "no longer in fashion," that edition of the magazine sold more copies than any other in the publication's eight-year history. The book's designer is Alejandro Magallanes.
