Ariantes is a Sarmatian, a barbarian warrior-prince, uprooted from his home and customs and thrust into the honorless lands of the Romans. The victims of a wartime pact struck with the emperor Marcus Aurelius to ensure the future of Sarmatia, Ariantes and his troop of accomplished horsemen are sent to Hadrian's Wall. Unsurprisingly, the Sarmatians hate Britain--an Island of Ghosts, filled with pale faces, stone walls, and an uneasy past.Struggling to command his own people to defend a land they despise, Ariantes is accepted by all, but trusted by none. The Romans fear his barbarian background, and his own men fear his gradual Roman assimilation. When Ariantes uncovers a conspiracy sure to damage both his Roman benefactors and his beloved countrymen, as well as put him and the woman he loves in grave danger, he must make a difficult decision--one that will change his own life forever.

Armed with just a few antique facts, Bradshaw ably recreates the extraordinary life of Archimedes, the great mathematician and engineer who built sophisticated weapons during the first Punic War. Archimedes lived in the Greek city of Syracuse from 287 to 212 B.C., except for a brief but glorious youthful stint in Alexandria, the hub of intellectual life in the classical age. Surrounded by men who share his genius for geometry, the absentminded Archimedes becomes intoxicated by numbers, often scribbling diagrams on tablecloths and staring for hours into a box of sand to calculate grains.

After three years, he begrudgingly returns to his hometown with his slave, Marcus, to find his father dying and his city at war with the Romans. Putting his engineering skills to use for the army, Archimedes builds bigger and better catapults, and he is soon being courted for his talent by the good King Hieron. Jealous co-workers and an unexpected betrayal shadow Archimedes's rise to fame as the Archimechanic. But Syracuse is winning the war because of his inventions, and King Hieron gives him the royal treatment in an effort to keep him from accepting a job offer from King Ptolemy of Egypt. Archimedes sets his sights on Delia, King Hieron's half-sister, with whom he shares a love of music, but he must choose between her and the fair city of Alexandria, between a career as a simple engineer and the siren call of pure mathematics.

Bradshaw (Island of Ghosts) is skilled at bringing historical figures to life, and this intriguing and entertaining novel of the boyish dreamer who possessed one of the ancient world's most brilliant minds demonstrates her vivid imagination.

If you think you know the story of Arthur - try again. Gillian Bradshaw completes her trilogy in an exceptional tale. This time the story is told from the perspective of Gwynhwyfar. Some of the basics hold true - the love triangle, the usurping, treasonous, illegitimate son and the battle of "good vs. evil".
However, Lancelot's name does not appear in this work - neither does Merlin's. Bradshaw holds true to the Welsh version of the tale and uses the more traditional characters of Cai and Bedwyr among others.
The end of Camlann comes not with a barge and three queens sailing Arthur off into the sunset...but with how kingdoms truly end and lives along with them.

It is a gripping, exciting read filled with good military strategy for those of you who like that aspect of Arthurian tales. If you like this legend - this is a must read.
--S.E.Kennedy (From Amazon)

    Publisher's Weekly
British novelist Bradshaw ( Imperial Purple ) has created a richly detailed, absorbing historical novel of the ancient world, with strong, well-developed characters and all the right plot elements: love, war, courtly life and the magic of the gods. In 140 B.C., narrator Tomryis, age 18, is chosen by Saka King Mauakes of Ferghana (now Afghanistan), to attend his new wife, Heliokleia, a Greek from the kingdom of Bactra. The marriage is a political alliance, and Mauakes makes it clear that beautiful, intelligent Heliokleia is to have only limited powers. The aloof queen decides to seek her soul's release by being the perfect ruler. Mauakes's grown son Itaz, devoted to his father, is sensitive to both the king's isolation behind the mask of power and Heliokleia's emotional suffering. Eventually Mauakes falls in love with his wife, but he can't demand her affection, which has settled on Itaz. Aided by their sun god patron, Heliokleia and Itaz must confront the paranoid, embittered Mauakes and endure a horrible confrontation with a supernatural creature. Well-researched, interesting details on the cultural and religious customs of the period provide background for the noble characters, who fulfill the promise, good or evil, of their true natures.

Library Journal
Bradshaw continues the tradition of excellence begun in her earlier historical novels ( Imperial Purple, LJ 11/15/88). Here she takes us to the kingdoms of Ferghana and Bactria (present-day Afghanistan) about 140 B.C. The widowed King Mauakes seeks a wife to assuage his loneliness and to create political alliances. Beautiful young Heliokleia of rival Bactria is selected to be the old man's queen. Unfortunately, the young woman, who has studied meditation with Buddhist monks and who prefers prayerful solitude to royal fanfare, seeks escape and serenity through meditation. Mauakes, in his insecurity, refuses to let her function as the queen she was trained to be, and she emotionally slips away from him. This so infuriates the king that he abuses her. Of course, there is an admirable younger son to soothe her, plus ambitious and corrupt council members. Ultimately, the gods reward the just in this satisfying contemporary story about an ancient land. For most fiction collections.-- Joan Hinkemeyer, Englewood P.L., Col.

School Library Journal
YA-- A fine story, set in Central Asia 200 years after the time of Alexander the Great. Warring barbarians want their rulers to conquer and rule as Alexander had once done. Faction against faction sets the region on fire with war. One ruler, stronger and smarter than the others, tries to secure his borders by treaties and royal marriages. His Greek border is peacefully aligned to his kingdom by his marriage to the sister of the Greek ruler. All is fine until she arrives; not only is the princess mounted on elephants that terrify even the soldiers and their horses, but she is beautiful, too. The tale begins as the aging ruler, amidst great pagentry, marries the young princess. His lack of personal hygene offends her, but loyalty to her people and a great sense of duty keep her from fleeing or killing herself. The story takes on new dimension when the son of the king falls in love with his stepmother, and she with him. Colorful ceremonies and romance set against antiquity's landscapes make this involving historical fiction. --Linda A. Vretos, West Springfield High School, Springfield, VA

Satisfying her maternal desires as well as her humanitarian beliefs, she's brought him back to England in the hope that she can find the medical aid he needs in order to hear and communicate. Eminent neurosurgeon, David Somers, is only too keen to advance his research in language impairment, and begins the unprecedented treatment. Janet's suspicions are aroused when she meets Michael Shahid, an Ml5 agent employed to ensure that the government's backing of the research is deserved. When Janet's house is burgled and David Somers and his assistant found murdered, Michael suspects that industrial espionage might be to blame, but the real truth is far more worrying...
