Straw Dogs is an exciting, radical work of philosophy, which sets out to challenge our most cherished assumptions about what it means to be human. From Plato to Christianity, from the Enlightenment to Nietzsche, the Western tradition has been based on the belief that humans are radically different from other animals. Taking inspiration from art, poetry, the frontiers of science, and philosophy itself, John Gray argues that the belief in human difference is an illusion and offers instead a post humanist view of the world. Straw Dogs is an exhilarating, sometimes disturbing, book that explores how the world and human life look once humanism has been finally abandoned.

<div><div>For the decade that followed the end of the cold war, the world was lulled into a sense that a consumerist, globalized, peaceful future beckoned. The beginning of the twenty-first century has rudely disposed of such ideas—most obviously through 9/11and its aftermath. But just as damaging has been the rise in the West of a belief that a single model of political behavior will become a worldwide norm and that, if necessary, it will be enforced at gunpoint.</div><div> </div><div>In Black Mass, celebrated philosopher and critic John Gray explains how utopian ideals have taken on a dangerous significance in the hands of right-wing conservatives and religious zealots. He charts the history of utopianism, from the Reformation through the French Revolution and into the present. And most urgently, he describes how utopian politics have moved from the extremes of the political spectrum into mainstream politics, dominating the administrations of both George W. Bush and Tony Blair, and indeed coming to define the political center. Far from having shaken off discredited ideology, Gray suggests, we are more than ever in its clutches. Black Mass is a truly frightening and challenging work by one of Britain’s leading political thinkers.</div></div>

What you want materially and what you want spiritually are both important, says John Gray, Ph.D., in How to Get What You Want and Want What You Have. "Wanting more is the nature of our soul, mind, heart, and senses," he says. As an antidote of sorts to the sometimes overly strict books of late that advocate a life of utter simplicity, he concedes that it's okay to want a big promotion or fancy car. It's also noble to want a solid spiritual life and to want to be at peace with yourself. However, he says, you need to recognize and work on the many self-defeating behaviors that may be thwarting your chances for reaching your goals. In fact, he identifies 24 typical stumbling blocks to look for.
How to Get What You Want and Want What You Have is perfect for the ostensibly successful businesspeople who can't explain why they're miserable, or people who blame their partners for their miseries instead of looking inward. It's filled with anecdotes and tools to help you achieve a fuller sense of identity. Gray says that one of the most important steps to reaching this level of self-awareness is meditation, and Gray gives dozens of stepping-off points for meditation exercises to help you ascertain what exactly it is that you want, and how to remove any obstacles--whether external or internal. Take it from a man who used to be so ascetic that he was rendered homeless but now has achieved a strong sense of self and has managed to write nine bestselling books: both spiritual and material success are within your grasp.

Psychologist John Gray (he of Men Are from Mars... fame) cites a need to shift from "fear-based parenting" (a punitive and oppressive approach to child rearing) to "love-based parenting" (which accepts children's desires and negative emotions while still setting reasonable limits). With child and teen violence increasing, rampant low self-esteem, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and attention deficit disorder, he says, "the Western free world is experiencing a crisis in parenting. Almost all parents today are questioning both the old and the new ways of parenting. Nothing seems to be working."
He suggests "Five Messages of Positive Parenting" that will facilitate such a shift: <ol> <li>It's okay to be different. <li>It's okay to make mistakes. <li>It's okay to express negative emotions. <li>It's okay to want more. <li>It's okay to say no, but remember mom and dad are the bosses.
Although his parenting philosophy is not necessarily revolutionary (think "positive discipline"), Gray manages to keep this parenting primer contemporary by weaving in specific challenges of new-millennium families--such as our tendency to be consumer-driven and overscheduled. "When parents learn what their children really need, they are less motivated to create money to acquire things and more motivated to create time to enjoy their family," Gray writes. "The greatest wealth for a parent today is time." --Gail Hudson

The need for love begins with your need to love yourself.
Consciously or unconsciously, everyone is trying to enrich and improve their relationships in some way. Enriching our relationships is an art and a science. For this enrichment to happen'even before we can find and accept love'we have to love ourselves.
Through his experience in working with others to heal their pain, Dr. Gray has found patterns and messages that many of us received while growing up. These messages can keep us from loving ourselves'and from loving and receiving love from others. By exploring how these messages became ingrained in us while we were young and how we are using them today, we can change old patterns and thoughts about ourselves and others as well as create long-lasting, fulfilling relationships.
John Gray tells us that “Loving yourself in the presence of others means being able to express your inner gifts and talents without fear. When you don't love yourself and mask your real self, the cycle works in the opposite direction'decreasing love and true self expression.”
Read by the author.

In his runaway year-long number one New York Times bestseller, Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, John Gray showed us how we can improve relationships with the opposite sex by understanding, accepting, and respecting the differences between men and women and strengthening communication. His insights into gender differences and his practical advice struck a chord with millions of readers and saved many thousands of relationships.
Now, in his provocative and important new book, What Your Mother Couldn't Tell You & Your Father Didn't Know, Gray answers the questions that our parents could not about relating and communicating with the opposite sex.
Times have changed. The old ways of relating, which may have worked for our parents, are definitely out-of-date and sometimes counterproductive. Relationships today require new skills to achieve lasting fulfillment. Having a husband who brings home a paycheck or a wife who maintains a nice, clean home is no longer enough.
John Gray draws upon his extensive work with singles and couples in his seminars to point us in a new direction. He promises--and delivers--the necessary information for creating and sustaining loving and mutually fulfilling relationships. He offers a new seed that, when planted and watered, will grow into a relationship that is not only loving but lasting.
By teaching relationship skills that address contemporary individuals' and couples' needs, John Gray offers practical ways in which to enjoy and celebrate the differences between men and women in peace and with passion.

<h4><center> Straight from the heart -- real-life couples share inspiring, edifying stories of Mars and Venus in love. </center> </h4>
Millions of readers have learned about relationships from John Gray's previous bestsellers, such as Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, Mars and Venus on a Date; and Mars and Venus in the Bedroom. Inspired by this enthusiasm, Gray asked a number of readers to share their own stories of how they've put his principles to work in their relationships. The result is this amazing collection of first-person accounts-along with Gray's own enlightening commentary-that will have you laughing, crying, and nodding in recognition.

Gray's contributors answer such questions as: <ul>

<li>What problems have you had in your relationship, and how have you overcome them?

<li>What special things do you and your partner do for each other?

<li>How do you best communicate with each other?

<li>How do you practice what you've learned?

<li>How does your love feel different now from how it felt before?

Their answers illustrate more eloquently than any textbook how to use Gray's advice and counsel to create your own fulfilling, healthy, and loving relationships.

Once upon a time, Martians and Venusians functioned in separate worlds. But in today's hectic and career-oriented environment, relationships have become a lot more complicated, and men and women are experiencing unprecedented levels of stress. To add to the increasing tension, most men and women are also completely unaware that they are actually hardwired to react differently to the stress. It's a common scenario: a husband returns home from work stressed out and eager to kick back on the couch and watch television. A wife returns home from work stressed out and wants to talk about it with her husband. What happens? Neither is on the same page, anger and resentment set in, and Mars and Venus collide.

Using his signature insight that has helped millions of couples transform their relationships, John Gray once again arms the inhabitants of Mars and Venus with information that will help them live harmoniously ever after. In Why Mars and Venus Collide, Gray focuses on the ways that men and women misinterpret and mismanage the stress in their daily lives, and how these reactions ultimately affect their relationships. "It's not that he's just not into you; he needs to fulfill a biological need," Gray explains. "And it's not that she wants to henpeck you; she also has a biological drive." He shows, for instance, how a husband's withdrawal is actually a natural way for him to replenish his depleted testosterone levels and restore his well-being, and how a woman's need for conversation and support helps her build her own stress-reducing hormone, oxytocin.

Backed up by groundbreaking scientific research, Gray offers a clear, easy-to-understand program to bridge the gap between the two planets, providing effective communication strategies that will actually lower stress levels. Whether in a relationship or single, this book will help both men and women understand their new roles in a modern, work-oriented society, and allow them to discover a variety of new and practical ways to create a lifetime of love and harmony.

John Gray shows that by understanding the differences between men and women in the workplace, anyone can identify and respond to various business approaches in a manner that earns greater respect and promotes increased cooperation. By recognizing how men and women interpret behaviors and reactions differently, a person can make more informed choices of how to make the best impression.

Mars and Venus in the Workplace analyzes the differences in the ways men and women communicate, solve problems, react to stress, earn respect, promote themselves, experience emotional support, minimize conflict, score points, view sex, and ask for what they want. By showing the many ways men and women misunderstand and misinterpret each other in the workplace, John Gray offers practical advice on reducing unnecessary conflict and frustration. Filled with his trademark communications charts and practical advice on everyday office issues, Mars and Venus In The Workplace will enable readers to achieve their goals and to make the workplace a source of fulfillment.

<div><div>By the author of the best-selling Straw Dogs, this book is a characteristically trenchant and unflinchingly clear-sighted collection of reflections on our contemporary lot. Back when Margaret Thatcher was prime minister of Great Britain, John Gray was an influential conservative thinker, whose writings helped influence the revitalization of the laissez-faire market in that country. Now, as free-market champions seek to make over the (mostly) postcommunist world in their own image, Gray has experienced a moment of apostasy. False Dawn argues that, far from bringing about economic paradise, global capitalism, left unchecked, "could well destroy liberal civilization." Gray is careful to distinguish "global capitalism" from "globalization," which he identifies as a broader tendency encompassing "the increasing interconnection of economic and cultural life in distant parts of the world." That societies around the world are coming into closer contact with each other is inevitable; that they will have to do so in a free market, particularly one largely shaped by Anglo-American economic values, is not. In fact, Gray says, pointing to the recent economic crises in Asia and Russia, such a model will not bring societies together, but may well tear them apart. "A worldwide free market," he warns, "is no more self-regulating than the national free markets of the past.... Unless it is reformed radically, the world economy risks falling apart in a replay, at once tragic and farcical, of the trade wars, competitive devaluations, economic collapses and political upheavals of the 1930s."

In original essays written expressly for this book, some of our wisest spiritual teachers attempt to answer these questions. Hoping to demystify the miraculous, author John Gray (Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus) offers a handbook on creating "practical miracles." Having experienced a personal miracle when he recovered from near blindness, Gray began to realize that humans could actually participate in creating their own miracles. "Miracles don't just happen for some and not for others," he notes. "They occur when specific conditions are nurtured." In order to nurture these conditions, Gray suggests living by nine guiding principles, including "Love as if for the first time," "Work as if money didn't matter," and "Relax as if everything will be okay."
Typical of Gray, he has narrowed his book down into concise formulas, following step-by-step, stage-by-stage plans and exercises. This compulsion to script his theories into neat little self-help packages is his downfall, limiting what could have been a meaningful and important discussion about miracle making in everyday life. Instead, we can't help feeling that he's simply holding up a bottle of his latest formula and saying, "Ladies from Venus, gentlemen from Mars, for just under $20 you too can be a miracle maker...." Nonetheless, his heart seems to be in the right place and there are passages of impressive wisdom. Even hardcore skeptics could live a better life (and may even encounter a miracle or two) by following his excellent list of guiding principles. --Gail Hudson

Recipient of knighthood and the Order of Merit, he has been the head of an Oxford College and the director of the Royal Opera House. During World War II, he acted as Winston Churchill's eyes and ears in America. He is also a talented and prolific writer with five volumes of essays to his name.

John Gray is the bestselling author of such books as Straw Dogs and Al Qaeda and What it Means to be Modern which brought a mainstream readership to a man who was already one of the UK's most well respected thinkers and political theorists.

Gray wrote Enlightenment's Wake in 1995 - six years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and six years before the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre. Turning his back on neoliberalism at exactly the moment that its advocates were in their pomp, trumpeting 'the end of history' and the supposedly unstoppable spread of liberal values across the globe, Gray's was a lone voice of scepticism. The thinking he criticised here would lead ultimately to the invasion of Iraq. Today, its folly might seem obvious to all, but as this edition of Enlightenment's Wake shows, John Gray has been trying to warn us for some fifteen years - the rest of us are only now catching up with him.

It is written in a dreamily impressionistic style whose primary concern is to capture its heroine's eternally shifting moods at their most ineffable and ephemeral. This title is not just glibly rhetorical. The heroine and her suitor never consummate their passion no even exchange so much as a kiss; ecstasy is all. Like its widely praised predecessor False Dawn, Two Faces of Liberalism, hailed by the Los Angeles Times as "elegant and powerful," offers a thoughtful and provocative analysis of the liberal tradition in politics. John Gray, an eminent professor at the London School of Economics, "picks large and interesting topics and says arresting things about them," according to the New York Review of Books. Two Faces of Liberalism argues that, in its beginning, liberalism contained two contradictory philosophies of tolerance. In one, it put forward the enlightenment vision of a universal civilization. In the other, it framed terms for peaceful coexistence between warring communities and between different ways of life. In this major contribution to political theory, Gray's new book "takes us beyond the current debate"(The New York Times Book Review) of traditional liberalism to keep up with the complex political realities of today's increasingly divided world.

Hayek on Liberty is a concise yet exhaustive and provocative study of this classic liberal philosopher. It examines the structure and impact of Hayek's system of ideas and locates his position within Western philosophy. Not available since the 1980s, this updated 3rd edition contains a a substantial new chapter in which Gray assesses how far the historical development of the last ten years can be deployed in a critique of Hayek's thought. Gray's reassessment is not only a provoking study of a classical philosopher; it is also a timely contribution to the debate over the future of conservatism.

Post-Liberalism gives post-liberal theory a definitive content. John Gray considers particular thinkers in the history of political thought, criticizes conventional wisdom--both liberal and socialist--of the Western academic class, and outlines what remains of value in liberalism. His argument states that we should not regret the failure of foundationalist liberalism, since we have all we need in the historic inheritance of the institutions of civil society. He argues that attention should be focused on the practice of liberty that these institutions encompass, rather than on

Major emphasis is also given to sources on 115 individual performance artists and groups. More than 3700 entries document print and media materials dating from 1914 to 1992. Organized for maximum accessibility, the sources are also extensively cross-referenced and are indexed by artist, subject, title, and author. Three appendices identify reference works, libraries, and archives, and addenda material not found in the book text, and two others list artists by country and by group or collective.

The first in-depth profile of the 21st prime minister of Canada. On June 2, 2002, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien sent a brief fiveparagraph letter to Paul Martin, his Minister of Finance. "Dear Paul," the letter said. "It is with sadness that I confirm that you are leaving the cabinet&#x2026;" The awkward wording reflected the profound bitterness that had come between the two men. Chrétien maintained that Martin had resigned. Martin maintained that he had been fired. The distinction did not matter, but the letter signalled the end of one of the most successful partnerships in Canadian political history. Even before their final split, Martin was the overwhelming favourite to succeed Chrétien as the leader of the Liberal party and the next prime minister. He had never tried to hide his ambition&#x2014; in fact, he had already started to build a sophisticated campaign organization&#x2014;and that, inevitably, was an increasing source of irritation between the two men for more than a decade. Martin got his first taste of politics as a boy, following the career of his father whom he adored. Paul Martin Sr. was on the national political scene for 40 years, a cabinet minister for 24 of those years. Twice he ran for the Liberal party leadership, and twice his dream of becoming prime minister was crushed. The younger Martin came to politics relatively late in life, but those who knew him in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when he was first seen on the fringes of the Liberal party, marked him as a man with political ambition. Until recently, Martin never acknowledged his ambition to be prime minister. But his father&#x2019;s memoirs testify that his ambition is of long standing. John Gray traces the course of Martin&#x2019;s early life and his success in business when he rose from his role as a corporate trouble-shooter for Paul Desmarais at Power Corp., to the presidency and ownership of Canada Steamship Lines. Six months after he left business for politics, he announced that he would be a candidate for the leadership of the Liberal party. His reach for the leadership in 1990 was a failure, but that did not stop him. Martin has vowed that, unlike his father, he will not fail twice. This first in-depth biography comes at a critical time, as Paul Martin stands ready to reach for the reins of power.(October 2003)

Urinals, vacuum cleaners, basketballs, glass sheets livestock? This study of key moments in the history of ready-made and object-based art features Damien Hirst (London), Gerhard Merz (Munich), Jeff Koons (New York) and their shared historical point of reference, Marcel Duchamp (Paris and New York, 1887-1968). Recently a poll of 500 British critics called Duchamp's 1917 Fountain the most influential Modern artwork ever created. Even more recently, a man assaulted it with a hammer at the Centre Pompidou, confirming that, nearly a century later, emotions are still running high. Object-based art, which grew into a major twentieth-century trend and continues today, took its cue from the ready-made, and Re-Object explores the continuation and transformation of both lines in contemporary artistic practice, via large-format photographs and analytical essays on the artists.

One of the great universal Truths is that in life there are always those who have just completed the journey you are about to begin. And yet few take the time to debrief these weary travelers and discover the twists and turns of the adventures, pitfalls, and perils they've just encountered.
