No one in history had a more eventful career in matrimony than Henry VIII. His marriages were daring and tumultuous, and made instant legends of six very different women. In this remarkable study, David Starkey argues that the king was not a depraved philanderer but someone seeking happiness -- and a son. Knowingly or not, he elevateda group of women to extraordinary heights and changed the way a nation was governed.
Six Wives is a masterful work of history that intimately examines the rituals of diplomacy, marriage, pregnancy, and religion that were part of daily life for women at the Tudor Court. Weaving new facts and fresh interpretations into a spellbinding account of the emotional drama surrounding Henry's six marriages, David Starkey reveals the central role that the queens played in determining policy. With an equally keen eye for romantic and political intrigue, he brilliantly recaptures the story of Henry's wives and the England they ruled.

The Virgin Queen, Gloriana, Good Queen Bess; Elizabeth I holds a unique place in the English imagination as one of the nation's most powerful, charismatic, and successful monarchs. Elizabeth usually is imagined as the icy, untouchable figure, re-created memorably on screen by Bette Davis and Dame Judi Dench, but that vision of Elizabeth ignores the turbulent years of her early life, from her birth as the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn in 1533 until her accession to the throne in 1558 after the death of her sister Mary. It is these early years that are the subject of David Starkey's fascinating Elizabeth, which was written to accompany the television series about her life.
Starkey argues that Elizabeth, in her first 25 years, "had experienced every vicissitude of fortune and every extreme of condition. She had been Princess and inheritrix of England, and bastard and disinherited; the nominated successor to the throne and an accused traitor on the verge of execution; showered with lands and houses, and a prisoner in the Tower". He draws on his skills as a respected Tudor historian to produce a deft account of the religious, political, and dynastic maelstrom of mid-16th-century England that reads "like a historical thriller." The book carefully picks its way through the finer points of contemporary religious conflict and the peculiarities of Tudor court ceremony, while exploring also the formation of Elizabeth's character in relation to a murdered mother, a charismatic father, a tortured sister, and a predatory guardian. Highly readable, and written with verve and pace, this is a fascinating account of the young Elizabeth. --Jerry Brotton, Amazon.co.uk

The first instalment of the highly anticipated biography of Henry VIII, written by one of the UK's most popular, established and exciting historians. Published to coincide with the 500th anniversary of Henry's accession to the throne, 'Henry: Virtuous Prince' is a radical re-evaluation of the monarchy's most enduring icon. Henry VIII was Britain's most powerful monarch, yet he was not born to rule. Thrust into the limelight after the sudden death of his elder brother, Prince Arthur, Henry ascended the throne in 1509, marking the beginning of a reign that altered the course of English history. In his youth Henry was highly intelligent, athletic and musically talented. He excelled in Latin and Mathematics and was an accomplished musician. On his accession to the throne, aged just seventeen, after the tumultuous rule of his father, he provided England with hope of a new beginning. Nobody could have foreseen how radical Henry's rule would prove to be. Often overshadowed by the bloody saga of his six marriages, his reign has left a lasting legacy. An absolute monarch, Henry's quest for fame was as obsessive as any modern celebrity. His fierce battles against Papal authority mark one of the most dramatic and defining moments in the history of Britain. Yet his early life was insecure. The Tudor regime was viewed by many as rule by usurpers and the dark shadows of the Wars of the Roses often threatened to tear England apart once more. The culmination of a lifetime's research, David Starkey gives a radical and unforgettable portrait of the man behind the icon; the Renaissance prince turned tyrant, who continues to tower over history.

Henry VIII was almost never alone. He was surrounded, twenty four hours a day, by the small group of intimates and personal attendants who made up the staff of his Privy Chamber. They organised his daily life, kept him amused and acted as the landline between the king and the formal machinery of government. These men, intermarried, interbred and close knit even in their mutual feuding, were supremely well placed to rig politics and patronage for their own benefit. Their influence was important and sometimes decisive: factions in the Privy Chamber destroyed Anne Boleyn, they frustrated the Catholic reaction of the 1540s, and, by doctoring Henry's will, prepared the way for the full blooded Protestantism of his son's reign. "The Reign of Henry VIII" is not so much a book about Henry VIII. It is about the great game of politics over which he presided.

This is an important new book published to accompany a major new British Library exhibition, Henry VIII: Man and Monarch (22nd April-6 September 2009) and the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII's accession to the throne. There is renewed public interest in Henry VIII. 2009 marks the 500th anniversary of his accession to the throne, plus several high profile publications and events. This book is co-edited and with contributions from David Starkey, the highly-regarded historian and author of many books on Tudor history, most recently "Henry: Virtuous Prince" (HarperPress 2008) and Dr Susan Doran (the same team that produced the bestselling "Elizabeth I" exhibition catalogue in 2003). The catalogue will be very handsomely produced. It will include colour illustrations of all 250 exhibits, together with related material. More than a dozen notable scholars have contributed to it, including Eamon Duffy, James Carley, John Guy, Diarmaid McCulloch and Eric Ives. A related 4-part series by David Starkey will be broadcast simultaneously on Channel 4.

<div>Political pundits never tire of reminding us of the great cultural divide between conservative “red” states and liberal “blue” ones. But common sense tells us that not all people in these states can be politically like-minded. David Starkey, a former red-state resident, wondered what politically progressive creative writers were feeling in the wake of George W. Bush’s reelection. How, Starkey asked contributors, does one live blue in a red state.</div><div> </div><div>This book supplies many answers. Writers as different as Jonis Agee and Stephen Corey, Robin Hemley and Lee Martin (a 2006 Pulitzer Prize finalist in fiction), Donald Morrill and Wyoming poet laureate David Romtvedt describe what it is like to live in a region that doesn’t always share one’s values. While pointedly progressive, the collection brings together the work of essayists who look beyond the passions of the moment—the war in Iraq, the rallying of the Right around social issues, the Democrats’ failure in 2004—to the need for unity. Sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant, always enlightening, these essayists’ views testify to the power of writing to bring us together as one nation of whatever color.</div>

Peter Elbow claims that "a good essay or biography requires just as much creativity as a good poem; and . . . a good poem requires just as much truth as a good essay." The contributors to Genre by Example would agree. Their book argues that creativity need not be muted simply to meet the perceived boundaries of the academic essay, that, in fact, an author immersed in a form has special insight unavailable through any other means. The authors all implicitly endorse the contention that we know best by doing.
Too often, writing theorists prescribe rules for their students and fellow teachers without providing any evidence that they themselves can comply with their own prescriptions. The contributors to Genre by Example are not evasive in this way. "Practice what you preach" might well be the book's ultimate pedagogy, a philosophy the contributors have embraced. They not only tell, they show. Bound by the conventions of a genre, they are better able to understand and explain the limitations, difficulties, and pleasures inherent in that genre. And the contributors find themselves saying exactly what they mean rather than engaging in jargon that is impressive and meaningful chiefly to academics.
Ultimately, the contributors' approach to the book's central concept has been limited by their knowledge that the readers will be primarily composition teachers, with instructors of creative writing and literature survey courses as secondary audiences. Genre by Example assumes these readers will welcome imaginative approaches to writing, but will also need to incorporate these ideas into their own classes. To that end, nearly every chapter offers specific, practical applications.

American poet David Starkey's Adventures of the Minor Poet was originally published by a small press in Wales. Although it has been out of print for years, the book has become something of an underground classic on both sides of the Atlantic. This new edition from Artamo Press includes the best work from the original edition as well as a significant selection of new poetry. As titles like "The Minor Poet Watches Cable TV with the Ghost of Marianne Moore" and "The Minor Poet Writes to a Friend Whose Work Is More Successful Than His Own" suggest, the poems in this collection are sardonic, wistful and sometimes quite moving.

Wendy Bishop and David Starkey have created a remarkable resource volume for creative writing students and other writers just getting started. In two- to ten-page discussions, these authors introduce forty-one central concepts in the fields of creative writing and writing instruction, with discussions that are accessible yet grounded in scholarship and years of experience. Keywords in Creative Writing provides a brief but comprehensive introduction to the field of creative writing through its landmark terms, exploring concerns as abstract as postmodernism and identity politics alongside very practical interests of beginning writers, like contests, agents, and royalties. This approach makes the book ideal for the college classroom as well as the writer's bookshelf, and unique in the field, combining the pragmatic accessibility of popular writer's handbooks, with a wider, more scholarly vision of theory and research.

Seafood and diet, the curing and preservation of fish and its distribution, fish farming from monastic institutions to the modern hi-tech methods and aquaculture, boats and gear, catching methods, the social structures of fishing communities, the Missions to deep-sea fishermen, the development of harbors and docks, fish protection against the background of ecological collapse, and the fishermen's skills set against such a dangerous occupation - these are just some of the themes which are covered.</div>

Make reading and modeling an integral part of your creative writing class with "Poetry Writing: Theme and Variations". Students will learn both the style and the substance of poetry by modeling their writing on professional poems. Each chapter opens with one of fifty poems from a distinguished group of twentieth-century American writers, including Robert Frost, Rita Dove, Mary Tall Mountain, and Gary Soto. The text is organized chronologically by the poets' year of birth to help students see how history has affected the subjects and styles of poetry. The poetic elements and topics occurring in each of the model poems are discussed. A student's response is presented, allowing writers to see how other beginning poets respond to the models and encouraging them in their own writing. The "Your Turn" exercises prompt writers toward a response of their own based on the style, subject, or elements of the professional and student model poems.

One of the few authors from the ranks of the nobility during the first half of the 16th century, Henry Parker, Lord Morley (c.1481-1556) is an undeservedly neglected figure, whose rehabilitation this volume sets out to establish. Morley was the first Tudor writer to render Petrarch's "Trionfi" into English verse, he set about imitating the "Italian Ryme called Soneto", and he translated Plutarch's "Lives" into English decades before any other writer attempted to do so. He presented his translations each year as New Year's gifts to those he wished to please, individuals as diverse as Henry VIII himself, the King's daughter Mary, and Thomas Cromwell. As these essays show, Morley was a kind of mirror of the ways in which the Tudor nobility functioned in a world wracked by faction and discord. The collection is interdisciplinary and features contributions by leading historians, cultural critics and literary scholars, including David Starkey, James P. Carley, Julia Boffey, A.S.G. Edwards, K.R. Bartlett, Richard Rex, Jeremy Maule and Suzanne Woods. It also includes editions of writings by Morley.

Here, six prominent Tudor historians reconsider the widley-held view that the 1530s witnessed a "revolution" in government and administration. This revisionist work not only offers a radical critique of established orthodoxy, but also presents important new interpretations of the history of the royal household, the council, parliament, and financial administration in the 15th and 16th centuries. In addition to the editors, contributors to the volume are J. D. Alsop, J. A. Guy, Dale Hoak, and Jennifer Loach.

David Starkey published his first poem in 1988, and for the past 18 years he has been a fixture of the American small press. While Starkey's poetry has appeared in hundreds of literary journals and a number of limited edition books and chapbooks, this is the first time his major work has been collected in a single volume. Readers acquainted with Starkey's poems will recognize his wry voice, impeccable ear, and wide range of form and subject matter. New readers will find much to admire in the writing of this accomplished yet underappreciated poet.

Teaching Writing Creatively represents a challenge to conventional notions of genre. It seeks to break down the artificial, antiquated barriers between "creative" and "academic" writing, making the writing classroom experience a more imaginative one.

Teaching Writing Creatively features many of the most respected names in compositioninstructors with long, successful histories of providing teachers with functional yet inventive methods of teaching writing. The collection begins with articles that assert that all good writing must be, in some important sense, "creative." These contributors offer accounts of the transformation of their composition classrooms; essays that demonstrate that good student writing is only marginally about genre; and a critique of the creative writing workshop as a model for the composition class. Part II offers a variety of ways to approach the teaching of writing as a creative endeavor. It includes articles on helping students better understand their own writing processes and suggestions on alternative composing strategies and their classroom applications. The contributors to the final section offer a variety of new approaches to creative writing that can be successfully applied to expository writing courses as well.

Student-centered and process-oriented, Teaching Writing Creatively is a book writing instructors will find immediately usefulparticularly composition instructors who feel hemmed in by the conventional expectations of writing courses and creative writing instructors looking to take advantage of the latest innovations in composition studies.

<ul>In recent years, the old connection between ars poetica and ars rhetorica has been reclaimed thanks in large measure to these two editors...In Praise of Pedagogy provides the strongest possible confirmation of the richness that results when we think and write creatively about our lives in the classroom...
- Ken Autrey</ul>In Praise of Pedagogy is unarguably a pedagogical work. Yet you won't find a dry, stuffy line anywhere in it. Front to back, this can't-put-it-down book offers creative writing by teachers about teaching writing. In poems and short fiction, over 60 contributors from high school and college classrooms deal with the myriad moments and matters nearly all English instructors are familiar with.
As Ken Autrey notes in the Foreword, these pieces "offer tributes, capture poignant moments, and recount anecdotes, but they also develop arguments, defend positions, and explain theories." Somewhere in our bones we know that poetry and fiction can serve powerful pedagogical purposes. Here is proof upon proof, and not a line of it pedantic. Editors Bishop and Starkey additionally provide convincing essays on the value of bringing together composition and creative writing pedagogies.
You can read In Praise of Pedagogy, feel enriched by the experience, and put it back on the shelf. There is a far greater chance, though, that you're going to respond to the reading by writing. Recommended for English instructors at secondary and college levels.
