The story starts conventionally enough with friends sharing ghost stories 'round the fire on Christmas Eve. One of the guests tells about a governess at a country house plagued by supernatural visitors. But in the hands of Henry James, the master of nuance, this little tale of terror is an exquisite gem of sexual and psychological ambiguity. Only the young governess can see the ghosts; only she suspects that the previous governess and her lover are controlling the two orphaned children (a girl and a boy) for some evil purpose. The household staff don't know what she's talking about, the children are evasive when questioned, and the master of the house (the children's uncle) is absent. Why does the young girl claim not to see a perfectly visible woman standing on the far side of the lake? Are the children being deceptive, or is the governess being paranoid? By leaving the questions unanswered, The Turn of Screw generates spine-tingling anxiety in its mesmerized readers.

The End of Oil is a "geologic cautionary tale for a complacent world accustomed to reliable infusions of cheap energy." The book centers around one irrefutable fact: the global supply of oil is being depleted at an alarming rate. Precisely how much accessible (not to mention theoretical) oil remains is debatable, but even conservative estimates mark the peak of production in decades rather than centuries. Which energy sources will replace oil, who will control them, and how disruptive to the current world order the transition from one system to the next will be are just a few of the big questions that Paul Roberts attempts to answer in this timely book.
As Roberts makes abundantly clear, the major oil players in the world wield their enormous economic and political power in order to maintain the status quo. Of course, they get plenty of help from the tens of millions of consumers, particularly in the U.S. and Europe, who guzzle oil as if there is an unlimited supply. And this demand shows no sign of abating--nearly half of the world's population lives without the benefits of fossil fuels and they desperately want to be among the haves. In countries such as China and India, where energy systems are already breaking down, Roberts discusses how they are looking to oil to fuel their race for development, in many cases ignoring environmental considerations altogether.
Though there is much to be pessimistic about, Roberts does uncover some positive developments, such as the race for alternative energy sources, notably hydrogen fuel cells, which could help to ease us off of our oil dependence before a full-blown energy crisis occurs. No one book could cover every aspect of what Roberts calls "arguably the most serious crisis ever to face industrial society," but The End of Oil is a remarkably informative and balanced introduction to this pressing subject. --Shawn Carkonen

The frightening truth about the modern food system. The best-selling author of The End of Oil turns his attention to food and finds that the system we’ve entrusted with meeting one of our most basic needs is dramatically failing us. With his trademark comprehensive global approach, Paul Roberts investigates the startling truth about the modern food system: the way we make food, market and consume it, and even think about it is no longer compatible or safe for the billions of consumers the system was built to serve. The emergence of large-scale and efficient food production changed forever our relationship with food and ultimately left a vulnerable and paradoxical system in place. Over 1.1 billion people worldwide are “over-nourished,” according to the World Health Organization, and are at risk of obesity-related illness, while roughly as many people are starving. Meanwhile the natural systems all food is dependent upon have been irreparably damaged by chemicals and destructive farming techniques; the pressures of low-cost food production court contamination and disease; and big food consumers, such as China and India, are already planning for tightened global food supplies, making it clear that the era of superabundance is behind us. Vivid descriptions, lucid explanations, and fresh thinking make The End of Food uniquely able to offer a new, accessible way to understand the vulnerable miracle of the modern food economy. Roberts presents clear, stark visions of the future and helps us prepare to make the decisions -- personal and global -- we must make to survive the demise of food production as we know it.

Claude Debussy (1862-1918) was a great harmonic innovator and one of the most original musical voices of the twentieth century. He created fresh, new tonal perspectives without abandoning tonality itself. With a revolutionary sense of instrumental color and a fleeting, atmospheric sound world, he is often described, rightly or wrongly, as an 'Impressionist' composer. This book presents a clear narrative history of Debussy s life, work, and cultural context along with essential reference material and striking illustrations, making it a vital purchase for anyone interested in the composer.

Claude Debussy is part of Phaidon's successful 20th Century Composers series, which presents authoritative and engaging biographies of the great creative musicians of our time, augmented by striking visual material and essential reference information. This edition of the book features a whimsical new cover by Jean-Jacques Sempé, the world-renowned illustrator and cartoonist.

From This Hill, My Hand, Cynthianas Wine is more than just a book about wine it is a work of environmental philosophy blending the values and ideals of aboriginal Americans with ecologically-minded commentators admired in European-American history and contemporary letters. Here we find Henry Thoreau, Aldo Leopold, and Wendell Berry to be philosophical brothers of Chief Seattle.
By grounding abstract environmentalist concepts in the gritty reality of growing wine grapes, author Paul Roberts shows how small-scale farming, using sustainable principles to offer diverse creations, can bring humans and nature into closer harmony.

Paris at the turn of the 20th century was obsessed with the interrelations of the arts. It was a time when artists and writers spoke of poetry as music, sounds as colors, and paintings as symphonies. The music of Claude Debussy, with its unique textures and dazzling colors, was the perfect counterpart to the bold new styles of painting in France. Paul Roberts probes the sources of Debussy's artistic inspiration, relating the "impressionist" titles to the artistic and literary ferment of the time. He also draws on his own performing experience to touch on all the principal technical problems for a performer of Debussy's piano music. His many suggestions about interpreting the music will be particularly valuable to performers as well as listeners.

    PERMANENT ENEMY

American taxpayers have been financing an ethnic cleansing campaign—without knowing. American commandos have been captured and killed overseas by foreign mercenaries hired by corrupt United States government officials. A Swiss bank infiltrated by the CIA, and a foreign head of State with a two-million-dollar per night gambling habit, and United Nations diplomats spying for Central Intelligence, are all part of a mind-blowing international conspiracy that succeeded in stealing close to $1billion from American citizens, and caused the massacre of more than a million innocent men, women and children.
Now, an angry American warrior has declared war on all concerned. His name is Brett Collins. He’s a Permanent Enemy. But the evil men he’s after are already out to destroy him. The war machines and secret commandos they control are large enough to bring down nations. It’s a David-versus-Goliath showdown. But instead of a slingshot, Brett Collins has appropriated an F-16 fighter jet.
With a full load of missiles and J-DAM bomb, and a mean sniper woman accomplice, the body count becomes extremely high as all hell breaks loose. Fast and furiously paced, this action thriller is filled with razor-sharp suspense and surprises. The writing style is highly visual—intensely cinematic and provocative. First in a series by a visionary novelist, Permanent Enemy is a kick-ass read that signals the emergence of a new thriller sub-genre characterized by globally-appealing, unapologetic, action-packed novels.

Innovations in Evidence and Proof brings together fifteen leading scholars and experienced law teachers based in Australia, Canada, Northern Ireland, Scotland, South Africa, the USA and England and Wales to explore and debate the latest developments in Evidence and Proof scholarship. The essays comprising this volume range expansively over questions of disciplinary taxonomy, pedagogical method and computer-assisted learning, doctrinal analysis, fact-finding, techniques of adjudication, the ethics of cross-examination, the implications of behavioural science research for legal procedure, human rights, comparative law and international criminal trials. Communicating the breadth, dynamism and intensity of contemporary theoretical innovation in their diversity of subject-matter and approach, the authors nonetheless remain united by a common purpose: to indicate how the best interdisciplinary theorising and research might be integrated directly into degree-level Evidence teaching. Innovations in Evidence and Proof is published at an exciting time of theoretical renewal and increasing empirical sophistication in legal evidence, proof and procedure scholarship. This groundbreaking collection will be essential reading for Evidence teachers, and will also engage the interest and imagination of scholars, researchers and students investigating issues of evidence and proof in any legal system, municipal, transnational or global...extremely useful for experts of both criminal and civil evidence, in any country within the civil law part of the world. Michele Taruffo, International Commentary on Evidence ...Innovations in Evidence and Proof constitutes a welcome and timely publication, and is essential reading for anyone serious about developing their scholarship and teaching within the law of evidence...the book has also much to say to a wider academic audience about the value of multidisciplinary and comparative scholarship. The Roman Empire was the largest in the ancient world, and it left its cultural mark on Europe and the world in its art and architecture, its roads, and its legal system.
This third volume in the illustrated Pocket Dictionary series introduces twenty-seven of the most important emperors who ruled this extraordinary civilization. Read about the mighty Augustus, who defeated Antony and Cleopatra and created a new Rome out of chaos; Trajan, who increased the empire
to its greatest extent; and Septimus Severus, the only emperor of African heritage, who rebuilt Rome and the empire after ruinous wars. Here also are those rulers whose names became synonymous with the excesses and cruelty associated with absolute power: Nero, who murdered his relatives and swept
away much of Rome for his own palace, and Caligula, an avid fan of public executions and gladiatorial contests, who spent a fortune on such luxuries as a marble stable and gold food for his favorite horse.
Illustrated with coins, jewelry, busts, and ancient monuments, this handy reference guide offers an introduction to a fascinating cast of characters whose deeds have echoed down through history.

Ages twelve and up.

This course at pre-intermediate level is specially written for adults who are looking for a springboard to further learning. It divides language learning into its constituent parts, which are located in three main sections - grammar, vocabulary and skills. These are linked by cross-referencing for easy access. The course gives teachers and students flexibility to use it in whichever way they want: in class or for self-access; to construct tailor-made programmes according to student need; and for courses of different length, such as year-round programmes, 12-week intensive courses or short courses. There is a strong learner development element in the course and an emphasis on analysis of language through problem-solving and discovery techniques. "The Sourcebook" consists of a student's book, workbook, teacher's book and a set of two class cassettes.

Cameo glass represents the ultimate achievement in Roman luxury glass, and the British Museum has the world's largest and finest collection. This comprises over seventy pieces, including two of only a dozen surviving complete cameo glass vessels: the celebrated Portland Vase, the greatest surviving example of Roman cameo glass, and the Auldjo Jug, each with its complex and intriguing history. The catalogue, begun by Veronica Tatton-Brown and William Gudenrath of the Corning Museum of Glass, has been revisited and enhanced by Paul Roberts of the British Museum and David Whitehouse and William Gudenrath of the Corning Museum of Glass. This publication presents the collection in its entirety for the first time. Each piece is illustrated in colour and line drawing, with full description and discussion. The book also presents the results of ground-breaking new research. The authors construct a comprehensive context, using archaeological, technological, iconographic and typological evidence to look at the origins of cameo glass and its place in contemporary Roman art and craftsmanship. They also propose a relative and absolute chronology for cameo glass, and suggest possible models for the organisation of the workshop(s) that produced it.
