In this extraordinary and unusual book, Jennifer Clement explores the turbulent relationships that Jean-Michel Basquiat had with his muse Suzanne Malouk and with the art establishment. The result is a distressing yet beautiful profile of a strange, powerful love striving to flourish in the face of horrendous outside pressures. And while Suzanne held firm, Basquiat sought refuge in a fatal heroin addiction. Widow Basquiat also presents an eye-witness account of the drug-fueled insanity of the New York art scene of the 1980s.

Deserted by her mother as a baby, Emily lives with her father in Mexico City, working in the local orphanage. When a mysterious cousin, Santi, appears on the doorstep, he brings with him family secrets, and soon Emily finds desire and temptation have overturned her straightforward life forever.

The Poison that Fascinates is an alluring fable forged in astonishing, sensuous prose. Jennifer Clement conjures a world heavy with the weight of Mexican superstition, mythology and faith, where saintliness and mortal sin sit side by side.

Set in contemporary Mexico, the book charts the consequences of a sexual relationship between Leonora, a servant in the wealthy O'Connor home, and her master. When a child, Aura Olivia, is born from this union, she is brought up as the daughter of the house. As the novel unfolds, the "true" story gradually emerges. Clement writes with an understated, poetic rhythm that has a hypnotic effect upon the reader. Compassionate and profound, A True Story Based on Lies delivers the same emotional impact as Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye. It is the recipient of the Systema Nacional de Creadores, a grant awarded in Mexico to those seen to be making outstanding contributions to literature. Previous recipients include Carlos Fuentes and Octavio Paz. "Clement's simple lilting prose-poetry belies a dark complexity ... and draws the reader on to the book's chilling conclusion." -- The Times (London) "A lyrically told, deeply moving tale." -- The Sunday Tribune (Dublin) "A bold and innovative novel ... Clement employs poetry's ability to mirror thought, to build a picture of Leonora's interior world." -- Times Literary Supplement (London)
