Start of a stunning new series!
THEIR DARK CURSE Jon Hyde-White was changed. Neither his horse nor his dog trusted him any longer, and with good cause; the transformation was almost complete. Soon he would cease to be an earl's second son and become a ravening monster. Already lust grew, begging him to drink, to devour, to swallow in great gulps hot blood from every opalescent neck--and the blood of his fiancée, Cassandra Thorpe, would be sweetest of all. Was that not why they were chosen? Was that not why the blasphemous creature Sebastian burst upon them from the London shadows? But Sebastian's evil task remained incomplete, and neither Jon not Cassandra was beyond hope. Still she smelled of meadowsweet and lilies, and he still believed in Heaven. One chance remained--in faraway Moldovia, in a secret brotherhood, in an ancient ritual and the power of love and the...BLOOD MOON

    A dark destiny
As the coach flew up the Cornish coast, Sara saw the end of her journey: Ravencliff Manor. She was now its Baroness. But what sort of man would rescue her from debtors prison by marriage, sight unseen, by proxy? Obviously, a wretch--the same sort of man who kept the curtains drawn and his house in a state of gloomy disrepair. The same sort of man who let a strange, wolf-like creature roam his grounds as if it were master. Of course, Sara would have accepted the proposal of the Devil himself to get out of Fleet, so she was resigned to her fate. Then she met her husband, hair black as sin and a handsome face, and all her assurance vanished. What strange curse had befallen Nicholas Walraven, and what secretes did he hide? What dark fortune had brought her to this place? For good or ill, she was now...the Ravencliff Bride.

    The hunger is boundless...
In the moonlit forest, bewitched by a wolf and dancing to music only she could hear, Paloma was first taken. And though she escaped her attacker, she could not flee her destiny.

…and it cannot be denied...
Milosh could sense it: Sebastian—the vampire, his archenemy and the foe of The Brotherhood and all things right and good—was again rising to power. To Whitebriar Milosh traveled, hoping to find his friends the Hyde-Whites; instead he found the abbey in ruins and a terrified waif. The copper-haired beauty stole his heart…and yet she was infected. She burned with bloodlust, burned as did all those who’d felt the bite of vampyr but not the solace of the Blood Moon—as Milosh himself had once burned. Paloma had the power to make him burn again, and in ways he hadn’t felt for centuries. She could make him a ravening beast…which meant the struggle to come would be not against Sebastian alone, but against himself and almost every desire in his darkening heart.

Joss Hyde-White left London for answers about who and what he was. What he found, with night falling, Cornwall consumed by a snowstorm quickly obscuring the road, was a carriage--a brougham by the look of it--its snow-covered horses standing like two ghosts, and a scene of horror interrupted within. A chestnut-haired beauty lay prone, requiring his assistance. But safety was not easily provided.

On this night that brought to mind vampires and the foulest creatures of myth, through the whirling snow and growing darkness, it was difficult to tell man or woman from beast. From this moment forward, no one and nothing could be trusted--not even his own instincts, be they to kiss or kill. Joss was on the road to the truth, and that would lead to the secret of his parents, to the Blood Moon Rite of ancient Persia, to the enigmatic Milosh, the Gypsy, and...THE BROTHERHOOD

From the depths, he would take her to the heights
Lady Rebecca's life changed forever in the blink of an eye. One moment she was fleeing her father across a storm swept Bodmin Moor; in the next, her carriage overturned on a steep gorge. But she did not die. Somehow, she was pulled clear.

Safety, her rescuer promised. But how could Becca feel safe? There was an eerie luminosity about him, a fluid silver aura like the lightning filling the night. And while his voice was deep, mellow--comforting, like the music a stream made while rushing over pebbles--it, too, held a hint of the otherwordly. Who was this strange savior, this displaced foreign nobleman who offered up his home and did not want her to leave? Long moonlit walks to the nearby waterfall, tight-lipped servants, a kiss unlike any other: everything about the Count was an enigma. Becca had heard myths of the Fossegrim: Creatures driven to find ecstasy with human women and then vanish forever. From their world, humans never returned. This man, Beccas was willing to follow.

At twenty-one, after two Seasons with no takers, Theadosia Barrington should have been grateful to snare Nigel Cosgrove. The earl-to-be was a blue-eyed Adonis, a true catch-and surely the incident in Covent Garden was exaggerated. And yet, upon her arrival at Cashel Cosgrove, Thea found herself more intrigued by the Irish castle's legend, that of the tragic Ros Drumcondra. "The Black Falcon" he was called. Party Gypsy, part Celt, the warrior had been conquered by betrayal alone. His ghost was still reputed to wander these halls, making women tremble with fear and desire-for who could resist those burnished copper eyes? Hadn't he stolen away the betrothed of Cian Cosgrove, made the woman his love slave? If only Thea herself could suffer such a fate. If only magic were a reality. It was to be a gala three-day event at Moorhaven Manor, the rambling country estate of Lady Jenna Hollingsworth's betrothed, Viscount Rupert Marner. To be attended by half the Cornish nobility, not to mention a host of peers from London, it would be a diversion of picnicking, riding, archery, and shooting. it would end in Jenna marrying another.

But was her new husband the same man who had killed her father? After one night of passion, she began to wonder. The jarring aroma of leather, tobacco and recently drunk wine drifting toward her on the breeze--she remembered it so well, as well as the tall, muscular shape beneath the multi-caped greatcoat, and those eye of blue fire through the holes in his mask. Oh yes, she remembered the man with whom she shared a secret past. He was the highwayman known as...The Marsh Hawk....

    THE PRIVATEER

Lark at first hoped it was a simple nightmare: If she closed her eyes, she would be back in the mahogany bed of her spacious boudoir at Eddington Hall, and all would be well. Her father, the earl of Roxburgh, would not be dead by his own hand, and she would not be in Marshalsea debtor's prison.

Such was not to be. Ere the Marshalsea could do its worst, the earl of Grayshire intervened. Lark shivered, considering the mysterious stone-faced noble. He'd paid her bond while the rest of London turned an eye as blind as the one beneath his eye patch. But while his touch was electric and his gaze piercing, for what purpose had he bought her freedom? A plan including Cornwall, return to the world of the haute ton, and embroilment in a struggle against both England's own Admiralty and the French. But even more perilous, the ex-sea captain might plunder her heart. No, this was not a dream. As Lark would soon learn, her dreams had never ended so well.

In his flight from Paradise to the Dark Isle, the vengeful gods exacted an unusual punishment: the slightest touch upon his wings, even from the wind that carries him aloft, arouses him. When a beautiful maiden, survivor of a shipwreck, comes to his lonely kingdom, it is all he can do to restrain himself--Rhiannon, a vision of sensual perfection, awakens true passion in his soul. Enfolding her in his huge, silver--white wings is the only way he can protect her. Heedless of the risk, Gideon is compelled to make her fully his--and the lovers succumb to an erotic enchantment like no other...

    Some loves...
There was little of joy and beauty for Tessa LaPrelle, a scullery maid in 1903 London, but a painting called The Bride of Time. The nude raised eyebrows and speculation that Tessa had posed. Impossible! Even if some man could make her so wanton, even if the subject had Tessa’s thick chestnut hair, the work had been commissioned a hundred years previous, at the start of the Regency!

…know the brush of eternity...
Regardless, it wasn’t the subject or its uncanny resemblance to her that drew Tessa to The Bride. Nor was it fascination with the artist: one Giles Longworth, whose portrait showed eyes black as sin, wind-combed mahogany hair and broad, muscular shoulders. If any could make her wanton it was he; but he was also accused of sorcery, of dark evil things. Some even said Longworth had been a werewolf, the throats of his alleged victims torn from their bodies. No, what drew Tessa was a small window in the painting’s corner, a seeming portal to that wild Cornish wilderness, to misty moors in a time gone by. Sometimes she dreamt she had been running all her life—from what and to whom, she was about to discover

The battle that won Robert Mack his scars was lost in the cradle, and thus the third Laird of Berwickshire wore his silver helm not for personal protection but the sake of others. While the right side of his face was untouched—handsome, even—the left lay in ruin. No man could look upon him without fear. Nor could any woman. Such a life was worse than any prison, so Robert set out for Paris and the great healer Nostradamus.

The powerful young Scot reached a land in conflict. With a boy on its throne and her people at war, all of France was shadows, intrigue and blood. The house seemed to beckon her. Welcome her. As if it knew her. The light had faded, and dark, bilious clouds had taken its place. In the three short weeks I'd spent in Cornwall, I'd learned two things: that the weather was not to be trusted, and that the wind never ceased to blow. Fair weather or foul, it whistled and murmured and moaned, like a living, breathing, tortured being. It had risen since it played innocently among the foxglove blooms earlier stirring the mists along the graveyard gate. Now it was angry, driving the black clouds inland from the sea. Waterfowl raced before it dotting the sky like a blizzard over the mighty house, and I'd scarcely pulled the car to a stop when the rain came. It was just as I remembered it from my drive-by earlier, like a creature of myth silhouetted against the storm-a huge, rambling, turreted structure of stone and timbers defying its existence in such a setting. Yet, aside from a wounded turret, a few missing boards, and a good deal of broken glass, Cragmoor approached the dawn of another century remarkably intact. I tried to imagine the house as it once must have been, ablaze with light and life, surrounded by manicured lawns and courtyards and lush, fragrant gardens. Now it rose from a tangled snarl of briar, thorn, and desolation. Row upon row of darkened windows, catching stray glints of the fading light, shuddered in the wind as the gale bore down upon it. The house was asleep, and I was about to wake it.

When light looks at itself, what does it see? Maybe a fat man eating to fill a lonely heart. Maybe a bored office worker who finally ventures outside to find herself. Perhaps a grieving husband making a choice about where to go next, a girl returning home after surviving a suicide attempt, a homeless person meeting a compassionate stranger, a woman finding her way through love's affronts and contradictions to its moments of grace. What roads does the soul take and what landscapes does it pass through on its journey to freedom? How does the river of change and growth, death and rebirth, move through a life? How does the world we experience reflect either the shadows of the false self or the divine light of the authentic self? Dawn Thompson's stories illuminate the cages we construct for ourselves and the whispers that urge us to break out.

"Writing a Politics of Perception" offers new approaches to five novels by women writing in Canada. Dawn Thompson analyses these works through an epistemological theory that shifts critical perspective in surprising ways.

Under consideration are two classics of Canadian literature, Nicole Brossard's "Picture Theory" and Margaret Atwood's "Surfacing", as well as three lesser-known works: Marlene Nourbese Phillip's "Looking for Livingstone", Beatrice Culleton's "In Search of April Raintree", and RTgine Robin's "La QuTbTcoite". Thompson develops a theory of 'holographic memory,' in which texts are performances that invite constant revision, remodelling, and interaction between narrative, memory, and, potentially, reality. This theory is informed by de Lauretis's semiotics of subjectivity, Derrida's memoire radicale, and physicist David Bohm's theory of holographic quantum reality.

Reading these works of Canadian literature through a theory of holographic memory, Thompson successfully combines literary and cultural studies without sacrificing one to the other. She adds to and creates an alliance between feminist, post-colonial, and marxist theory, furthering political work in each of these areas. The interdisciplinary nature of Writing a "Politics of Perception" will attract scholars and students in a variety of fields, including Canadian and QuTbec literature, comparative literature, women's studies, cultural studies, philosophy, and the social sciences.
