A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist tells the amazing story of how a group of imprisoned boys won their freedom, found justice, and survived one of the darkest and least-known episodes of American history.
In the early twentieth century, United States health officials used IQ tests to single out "feebleminded" children and force them into institutions where they were denied education, sterilized, drugged, and abused. Under programs that ran into the 1970s, more than 250,000 children were separated from their families, although many of them were merely unwanted orphans, truants, or delinquents.
The State Boys Rebellion conveys the shocking truth about America's eugenic era through the experiences of a group of boys held at the Fernald State School in Massachusetts starting in the late 1940s. In the tradition of Erin Brockovich, it recounts the boys' dramatic struggle to demand their rights and secure their freedom. It also covers their horrifying discovery many years later that they had been fed radioactive oatmeal in Cold War experiments -- and the subsequent legal battle that ultimately won them a multimillion-dollar settlement.
Meticulously researched through school archives, previously sealed papers, and interviews with the surviving State Boys, this deft exposé is a powerful reminder of the terrifying consequences of unchecked power as well as an inspiring testament to the strength of the human spirit.

The name Hershey evokes many things: chocolate bars, the company town in Pennsylvania, one of America's most recognizable brands. But who was the man behind the name? In this compelling biography, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Michael D'Antonio gives us the real-life rags-to-riches story of Milton S. Hershey, a largely uneducated businessman whose idealistic sense of purpose created an immense financial empire, a town, and a legacy that lasts to this day.

Hershey, the son of a minister's daughter and an irresponsible father who deserted the family, began his career inauspiciously when the two candy shops he opened both went bankrupt. Undeterred, he started the Lancaster Caramel Company, which brought him success at last. Eventually he sold his caramel operation and went on to perfect the production process of chocolate to create a stable, consistent bar with a long shelf life...and an American icon was born.

Hershey was more than a successful businessman -- he was a progressive thinker who believed in capitalism as a means to higher goals. He built the world's largest chocolate factory and a utopian village for his workers on a large tract of land in rural Pennsylvania, and used his own fortune to keep his workers employed during the Great Depression. In addition, he secretly willed his fortune to a boys' school and orphanage, both of which now control a vast endowment.

Extensively researched and vividly written, Hershey is the fascinating story of this uniquely American visionary.

Far from being just an itchy annoyance, a mosquito bite can also mark the transmission of a deadly disease. Millions worldwide die of malaria, yellow fever, and West Nile virus every year. Scientist Andrew Spielman tells the story of the tiny, ubiquitous insect, the diseases it carries, and the fight against them both in Mosquito.
Spielman, who has spent much of his career battling mosquitoes and mosquito-borne illness, knows his subject intimately--perhaps too intimately, as the section on the different species drags a bit. Better is his handling of various historic epidemics, from the malaria outbreak that caused the French to abandon the Panama Canal to the 1999 West Nile virus outbreak in New York City.
Spielman also recounts stories of how the tiny pests were thwarted, including the way DDT came to be used as a weapon in the cold war (take our side and we'll get rid of your mosquitoes)--and why these efforts ultimately failed. Most important, Spielman details how cities should prepare themselves for the inevitable epidemics ahead. --Sunny Delaney

A Ball, a Dog, and a Monkey tells the remarkable story of America's first efforts to succeed in space, a time of exploding rockets, national space mania, Florida boomtowns, and interservice rivalries so fierce that President Dwight Eisenhower had to referee them.

When the Soviet Union launched the first orbital satellite, Sputnik I, Americans panicked. The Soviets had nuclear weapons, the Cold War was underway, and now the USSR had taken the lead in the space race. Members of Congress and the press called for an all-out effort to launch a satellite into orbit. With dire warnings about national security in the news almost every day, the armed services saw space as the new military frontier. But President Eisenhower insisted that the space effort, which relied on military technology, be supervised by civilians so that the space race would be peaceful. The Navy's Vanguard program flopped, and the Army, led by ex-Nazi rocket scientist Wernher von Braun and a martinet general named J. Bruce Medaris (whom Eisenhower disliked), took over. Meanwhile, the Soviets put a dog inside the next Sputnik, and Americans grew more worried as the first animal in space whirled around the Earth.

Throughout 1958 America went space crazy. UFO sightings spiked. Boys from Brooklyn to Burbank shot model rockets into the air. Space-themed beauty pageants became a national phenomenon. The news media flocked to the launchpads on the swampy Florida coast, and reporters reinvented themselves as space correspondents. And finally the Army's rocket program succeeded. Determined not to be outdone by the Russians, America's space scientists launched the first primate into space, a small monkey they nicknamed Old Reliable for his calm demeanor. And then at Christmastime, Eisenhower authorized the launch of a secret satellite with a surprise aboard.

A Ball, a Dog, and a Monkey memorably recalls the infancy of the space race, a time when new technologies brought ominous danger but also gave us the ability to realize our dreams and reach for the stars.

A richly detailed and engrossing portrait of the enigmatic owner who changed Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and baseball— forever.

Reviled in New York and beloved in Los Angeles, Walter O’Malley is the most controversial owner in the history of American sports. He changed baseball and Brooklyn forever when he moved the Dodgers to California. But while famous writers have ranked him with Hitler and Stalin when listing twentieth- century villains, O’Malley refused to apologize or defend himself. As a result, fans across the nation have been unable to stop arguing about him—until now.

Using never-before-seen documents and candid interviews with O’Malley’s associates and relatives, Pulitzer Prize–winning writer Michael D’Antonio finally reveals this complex sportsman and industry pioneer. Born into Tammany Hall connections, O’Malley used political contacts to grow wealthy during the Great Depression, and then maneuvered to take control of the formerly downtrodden Dodgers. But while he pursued wealth and power, O’Malley didn’t decide to uproot the borough’s team until he had been outmatched in a war of wills with famed power broker Robert Moses. Once transplanted to Los Angeles, O’Malley overcame opponents of his stadium and helped define the city. Other owners came to regard him as their guide—almost an unofficial commissioner—and he worked behind the scenes to usher in the age of the players union and free agency.

Filled with new revelations on O’Malley’s battle with Moses, his pioneering business strategies, and his relationship with Jackie Robinson, Forever Blue is a uniquely intimate portrait of a man who changed America’s pastime forever. His fascinating story is fundamental to the history of sport, business, and the American West.

A pediatrician in New York inspires her own patient, a girl with sickle cell anemia, to become a doctor herself.
An oncologist in Chicago lets go of her preconceived ideas about gay life as she becomes friends with a man who has AIDS.
A general practitioner in Chattanooga uses literature to heal, prescribing novels and poetry to go with good medicine.
These are just three of the wonderful doctors who practice The Best Medicine and who, along with their patients, can be found in these pages. Each of the twenty-five doctor-patient relationships portrayed in this book reveals ways we can all improve our health, our lives, and our communities.
For too long the value of the doctor-patient relationship has been ignored in the national debate over healthcare. Many Americans, who have lost their connections to their doctors, may even view such a relationship as old-fashioned and maybe even too expensive. The truth is, doctors who know their patients well can provide not only the best, but the most cost-effective care as well.
All of us eventually play the patient's role. At some point a relationship with a doctor becomes central to our lives, even a matter of life and death. The Best Medicine shows the value of forming a close bond between doctor and patient well before a crisis arises, and it shows us all how to do it even in the world of modern healthcare.

The year 1972 was an incredible one for golf. The games traditional stateliness gave way to a fiercer and more exciting dynamic as Trevino, Palmer, Nicklaus, and Player dominated the course. Their intense competitiveness and unbelievable prowess paved the way for the likes of Tiger and Sergio, and shaped the game we know today. Armed with a reporters perspective and a passionate golfers love of the game, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Michael DAntonio offers a behind-the-scenes portrait of this extraordinary time. He details the most exciting British Open ever played; the best single shot ever made at the PGA Championship; and the division between the older champions and new prodigies. He reveals Lee Trevinos near nervous breakdown and explores Jack Nicklauss evolution from arrogant youth to best golfer of his generation. At no other time would so many great players compete together at the height of their powers. Michael DAntonio captures this pivotal year in all its glory in a book every golf fan will treasure.
