In the summer of 1818, Percy Bysshe Shelley pulled himself away from a flurry of other projects to devote himself to translating Plato's Symposium. Besides being one of the very great lyric poets of Romanticism, Shelley was an accomplished Hellenist, having a natural sympathy for Plato's way of seeing the world. The result of his labor was a translation of Plato's principal work on love that is, in both clarity & felicity of expression, unmatched by any contemporary translation. Much of what the dialog offers to today's reader--namely, its invitation to see erotic experience as the privileged locus of our contact with the sacred & divine--is lost in translation by failures of tone more than by inaccuracies or simple infelicities. The elevation & sophistication of Shelley's prose makes his translation a much better English vehicle for Plato's writing than the rather chatty & colloquial translations current today. Plato's speeches on love need an English idiom in which myth is at home, & in which humor rises to urbanity rather than descending to mere wit & joke. With Shelley, we get a translation of a great literary masterpiece by a writer who is himself a literary master, & his mastery is of exactly the type required by Plato's text. This translation came at the height of Shelley's powers, mirroring in language & conception some of his finest works, & so is itself a precious document in the history of Romanticism, for which the reappropriation of Plato is 2nd in importance only to the massive influence of Shakespeare. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, her husband's literary executor, upon publication of a somewhat expurgated version of the dialog, boasted that "Shelley resembled Plato; both taking more delight in the abstract & the ideal than in the special & the tangible. This did not result from imitation; for it was not till Shelley resided in Italy that he made Plato his study. He then translated his Symposium & Ion; & the English language boasts of no more brilliant composition than Plato's Praise of Love translated by Shelley." If this goes too far, it goes at least in the right direction.

Shelley's work has been criticized for its didacticism and undisciplined emotionalism. But essentially, he was a poet of ideas and in his search for truth and original human perfection, Shelley was inspired as much by the Greek poets and philosophers, particularly Plato, as by the radicalism of his own age. Above all, his great gift was his lyricism and his verse comes as near to music as poetry can.

Shelley's short, prolific life produced some of the most memorable and well-known lyrics of the Romantic period. But he was also the most radical writer in the English literary tradition of his day, a fiery political visionary committed to social change and progress. The generous selection in this volume represents the wide range of his writing, both poetry and prose. Arranged chronologically, the accompanying introductory essays set Shelley's works in their historical, social and political context.

This major new edition, originally commissioned for the acclaimed Oxford Authors series under the general editorship of Frank Kermode, brings together a unique combination of Shelley's poetry and prose - the lyric poems, plays, longer poems, criticism, and essays - to give the essence of his work and thinking. Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) was a Romantic poet of radical imaginings, living in an age of change. His tempestuous life and friendship with Byron, and his tragically early death, at times threatened to overwhelm his legacy as a poet, but today his standing as one of the foremost English authors is assured. This freshly edited anthology - the fullest one-volume selection in English - includes all but one of the longer poems, from Queen Mab onwards, in their entirety. Only Laon and Cythna is excerpted, in a generous selection. As well as works such asPrometheus Unbound, The Mask of Anarchy, and Adonais, the volume includes a wide range of Shelley's shorter poems and much of his major prose, including A Defence of Poetry and almost all of A Philosophical View of Reform. Shelley emerges from these pages as a passionate and eloquent opponent of tyranny and a champion of human possibility.

The Cenci was a verse drama written in the summer of 1819 by Percy Bysshe Shelley. It was inspired by a real Italian family, the Cencis (especially Beatrice Cenci). Due to its theme of incest the play was considered unperformable in its day , and it was not performed in London until 1922. Later it was included in the Harvard Classics as one of the most important and representative works of the western canon

Zastrozzi, Shelley’s first published novel, is a work of pure Gothic fantasy, offering many glimpses of the author’s nascent poetic genius. Zastrozzi, the arch–villain of the tale, is sworn to avenge the wrongs done to his mother. Prepared to go to any lengths to execute his horrific plans, he enlists the help of the willing Matilda. Together, they vow to destroy Verezzi and Julia, the subjects of their wrath, and embark upon a fateful chain of events that can lead only to catastrophe. Foreword by Germaine Greer.

A milestone in literary scholarship, the publication of the Johns Hopkins edition of The Complete Poetry of Percy Bysshe Shelley makes available for the first time critically edited clear texts of all poems and translations that Shelley published or circulated among friends, as well as diplomatic texts of his significant incomplete poetic drafts and fragments. Edited upon historical principles by Donald H. Reiman and Neil Fraistat, the multi volume edition will offer more poems and fragments than any previous collective edition, arranged in the order of their first circulation. These texts are followed by the most extensive collations hitherto available and detailed commentaries that describe their contextual origins and subsequent reception. Rejected passages of released poems appear as supplements to those poems, while other poetic drafts that Shelley rejected or left incomplete at his death will be grouped according to either their publication histories or the notebooks in which they survive.

Volume One includes Shelley's first four works containing poetry (all prepared for publication before his expulsion from Oxford), as well as "The Devil's Walk" (circulated in August 1812), and a series of short poems that he sent to friends between 1809 and 1814, including a bawdy satire on his parents and "Oh wretched mortal," a poem never before published. An appendix discusses poems lost or erroneously attributed to the young Shelley.

"These early poems are important not only biographically but also aesthetically, for they provide detailed evidence of how Shelley went about learning his craft as a poet, and the differences between their tone and that of his mature short poetry index a radical change in his self-image... The poems in Volume I, then, demonstrate Shelley's capacity to write verse in a range of stylistic registers. This early verse, even in its most abandoned forays into Sensibility, the Gothic, political satire, and vulgarity -- perhaps especially in these most apparently idiosyncratic gestures -- provides telling access to its own cultural moment, as well as to Shelley's art and thought in general." -- from the Editorial Overview

This two-volume set presents and contextualizes major manuscripts in The Carl H. Pforzheimer Collection of Shelley and His Circle, now at The New York Public Library.
The volumes open with a retrospective centered on the young Shelley, featuring unpublished letters from 1809-1810, a memorandum book he kept at Eton, his libelous verse-letter about his parents, and other manuscripts predating his Italian exile. This backward glance also includes the only known exchange between Mary Wollstonecraft and Catharine Macaulay, Godwin's first letter to Malthus, and a partial draft of Mary Shelley's Proserpine, emended by her husband. The chronology of the Italian period begins in July 1820 with the press copy of Byron's verse drama Marino Faliero and continues through December, a period of political ferment when the letters of Leigh Hunt, the Shelleys, Byron, and Countess Teresa Guiccoli reflect preoccupation with Queen Caroline's "trial" for adultery in Britain and brewing revolutions in Italy. Other highlights are two important eyewitness accounts: a young British officer's reminiscences of Shelley in 1814 and Henry Reveley's testimony about the Shelley Circle. Four substantial essays along with detailed commentaries provide context for the 100 manuscripts.

The modern English drama is represented here by two comedies of the eighteenth century, Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer and Sheridan's The School for Scandal, and by four tragedies, one of the seventeenth century, Dryden's All for Love, and three of the nineteenth, Shelley's The Cenci, Browning's A Blot in the 'Scutcheon and Byron's Manfred. Since literary fashions change from age to age, and since the authors of these plays were, even when contemporaries, men of markedly different tastes, it is natural that the six dramas should be more or less conspicuously dissimilar. Each is great because it follows an ideal; each is great in a different way because its ideal is not that of the others.

Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) was one of the major English Romantic poets and is widely considered to be among the finest lyric poets of the English language. He received his early education at home, tutored by Reverend Evan Edwards of Warnham. In 1802, he entered the Syon House Academy of Brentford. He was routinely bullied while he was there, both because of his "girlish" appearance and his family's aristocratic ties. Shelley's unconventional life and uncompromising idealism, combined with his strong skeptical voice, made him a notorious and much denigrated figure during his life. Distracted by political events, he visited Ireland in order to engage in radical pamphleteering where he wrote the Address to the Irish People. His activities earned him the unfavourable attention of the British government. His first publication was a Gothic novel, Zastrozzi (1810). He is most famous for such anthology pieces as Ozymandias, Ode to the West Wind (1819) and To a Skylark (1820). His major works were long visionary poems including Alastor (1815), The Revolt of Islam (1817) and Adonais (1821).

This Audiofy audiobook chip packs Michael Sheen's full 2.5 hour reading of "Great Poets of the Romantic Age" on a tiny memory card. A single Audiofy audiobook chip, hardly larger than a stamp, holds a complete digital audiobook, and saves the last listening position automatically, unlike CDs. With an SD memory card slot or low-cost adapter - like those for digital cameras - this Audiofy audiobook chip can be played on Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh desktop computers or laptops (Microsoft Windows XP/2000/Me/98, or Apple Mac OS X 10.3.9 and above) or transferred to Apple iPod media players. Audiobook chips also move seamlessly to most Palm OS and Pocket PC handheld PDAs with SD expansion slots, as well as Treo and Windows Mobile "smartphones" (Palm OS 5.2 or Windows Mobile 2002 and above)... "The Tyger..." "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud..." "Ode to the West Wind..." "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner..." "Ode to a Nightingale..." "We'll go no more a-roving..." "The Peasant Poet..." "All good poetry," wrote Wordsworth, "is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" and this was to be one of the hallmarks of the Romantic poets. With a dynamic spirit, these great English poets made a conscious return to nostalgia and spiritual depth. Each chose a different path, but they are united in a love of moods, impressions, scenes, stories, sights and sounds. In this collection of more than forty poems are some of the finest and most memorable works in the English language.

It was on a `dark and stormy night', during the summer of 1816 that an eccentic group of English literati gathered at the Villa Diodati. The atmosphere at the Villa was charged by the violent streaks of lightening that licked at the mountain tops and split a black sky. As the wind outside whipped up the surface of lake Leman into a cauldron of waves the occupants of the Villa; Lord Byron, Mary Shelley, Dr John Polidori, Percy Shelley and Claire Clairmont, whipped themselves into a gothic frenzy with recitals of haunting poetry and ghost stories. The stories that they read came from a book, originally written in German, that had recently been translated into French. The book that they read from was 'Fantasmagoriana' which now claims a unique place in literary history. This is the first ever full English translation of the all of the stories that inspired Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Dr John Polidori's The Vampyre.
This unusual book also contains an academic essay that explores the influence that these stories had upon Mary Shelley's writing and demonstrates some marked similarities between precise extracts of 'Frankenstein' and the 'Fantasmagoriana' stories.

The Romantic movement is considered by many to be the zenith of English poetry. With its roots in a reaction against ordered neoclassicism, Romantic poetry's emphasis on nature, both real and fantastic, still resonates today. This collection combines great voices with great poets, including Glenda Jackson reading Wordsworth's "Lines Written in Early Spring," Stephen Fry reading Keats's "To Autumn," and a marvelous archival recording of Orson Welles reading Byron's "So We'll Go No More a-Roving." Blake, Coleridge, and Shelley are also well represented, with "Kubla Khan," "Ode to the West Wind," and "The Tiger," among others. Fans of Blake's mysticism, Wordsworth's love of nature, Keats's sensual melancholy, or simply beautiful poetry will enjoy this wonderful collection. Listen to Michael Tucker read William Blake's "Garden of Love." Visit our audio help page for more information. (Running time: 1.5 hours, 1 cassette) --C.B. Delaney
