Den Anfang macht Terry Pratchett, der bekannte und beliebte Autor der Scheibenwelt-Romane, mit einer neuen und gelungenen Kurzgeschichte über die Figuren seiner Kultromane. Der Rest des Bandes enthält eine durchaus beeindruckende Zusammenstellung von Geschichten, die einen Zeitraum von über fünfzig Jahren umspannen.

Haining stellt dabei einem neuen Publikum einige echte Klassiker vor, die heute noch genauso lesenswert sind wie zum Zeitpunkt ihres Erscheinens. Manche sind eher leise und nachdenklich im Tonfall, andere wiederum gruselig oder satirisch. Vertreten sind die großen Namen der Phantastik, von Michael Moorcock und Robert Bloch, dem Schöpfer von Psycho, über Mervyn Peake und Frederic Brown bis hin zu Piers Anthony.
