"Community, Identity, Stability" is the motto of Aldous Huxley's utopian World State. Here everyone consumes daily grams of soma, to fight depression, babies are born in laboratories, and the most popular form of entertainment is a "Feelie," a movie that stimulates the senses of sight, hearing, and touch. Though there is no violence and everyone is provided for, Bernard Marx feels something is missing and senses his relationship with a young women has the potential to be much more than the confines of their existence allow. Huxley foreshadowed many of the practices and gadgets we take for granted today--let's hope the sterility and absence of individuality he predicted aren't yet to come.

Sometimes a writer has to revisit the classics. Here we find that "gonzo journalism"--gutsy first-person accounts wherein the author is part of the story--didn't originate with Hunter S. Thompson or Tom Wolfe. Aldous Huxley took some mescaline and wrote about it some 10 or 12 years earlier than those others. The book he came up with is part bemused essay & part mystical treatise--"suchness" is everywhere to be found while under the influence. This is a good example of essay writing, journal keeping & the value of controversy--always--in one's work.

The astonishing novel Brave New World, originally published in 1932, presents Aldous Huxley's vision of the future -- of a world utterly transformed. Through the most efficient scientific and psychological engineering, people are genetically designed to be passive and therefore consistently useful to the ruling class. This powerful work of speculative fiction sheds a blazing critical light on the present and is considered to be Huxley's most enduring masterpiece.

Following Brave New World is the nonfiction work Brave New World Revisited, first published in 1958. It is a fascinating work in which Huxley uses his tremendous knowledge of human relations to compare the modern-day world with the prophetic fantasy envisioned in Brave New World, including threats to humanity, such as overpopulation, propaganda, and chemical persuasion.

Inevitably, this island of bliss attracts the envy & enmity of the surrounding world. A conspiracy is underway to take over Pala & events begin to move when an agent of the conspirators, a newspaperman named Faranby, is shipwrecked there.
When the novel Brave New World first appeared in 1932, its shocking analysis of a scientific dictatorship seemed a projection into the remote future. Here, in one of the most important and fascinating books of his career, Aldous Huxley uses his tremendous knowledge of human relations to compare the modern-day world with his prophetic fantasy. He scrutinizes threats to humanity, such as overpopulation, propaganda, and chemical persuasion, and explains why we have found it virtually impossible to avoid them. Brave New World Revisited is a trenchant plea that humankind should educate itself for freedom before it is too late.

When it was published in 1928, Point Counter Point no doubt shocked its readers with frank depictions of infidelity, sexuality & the highbrow high jinks of Aldous Huxley's arty characters. What's truly remarkable, however, is how his novel continues to shock today. True, we may hardly lift an eyebrow at poor Marjorie Carling leaving her husband to live in sin with--& get pregnant by--her lover Walter Bidlake. The sexual exploits of Lady Edward Tantamount or her daughter, Lucy, seem quite in keeping with the behavior expected of such exalted persons by readers inured to the exploits of the British Royals. If the varieties of sexual experience on display in Huxley's novel seem tame by current standards, his clear-eyed dissection of the motives behind them are thrillingly fresh--& his commentaries on everything from politics to ecology sometimes chillingly prescient. Take for example, the wisdom of amateur biologist Lord Edward Tantamount on the subject of non-renewable resources:
"No doubt," he said, "you think you can make good the loss with phosphate rocks. But what'll you do when the deposits are exhausted?" He poked Everard in the shirt front. "What then? Only two hundred years & they'll be finished. You think we're being progressive because we're living on our capital Phosphates, coal, petroleum, nitre--squander them all. That's your policy. And meanwhile you go round trying to make our flesh creep with talk about revolutions."
When his interlocutor, the fascist politician Everard Webley, demands to know whether Lord Edward wants a revolution, Tantamount first asks whether such an event would reduce the population & check production & then, when assured it would, he responds, "'Then certainly I want a revolution.' The Old Man thought in terms of geology & was not afraid of logical conclusions."
Huxley fills his novel with a multitude of characters, from the obscenely wealthy Tantamounts to the priapic painter John Bidlake, his children Walter & Elinor, & their respective mates, Marjorie Carling & Philip Quarles. There is also the venomous Maurice Spandrell, the revolutionary Illidge, the unctuous Burlap, & the happily married (a rarity in this novel) Mark & Mary Rampion, who are the book's moral center--theirs is the one relationship that combines reason & passion in proper measure. They are purportedly in part based on well-known figures of the time such as D.H. Lawrence & Katherine Mansfield. Love, loss, infidelity & murder are the subjects under discussion as Huxley juxtaposes one point of view against its opposite, mixing in a healthy dollop of science, politics, religion & art, as well.
I>Point Counter Point</I> is an intelligent novel about the intellectual world, one that bears up gracefully under the test of time.--Alix Wilber

A comical cast of outlandish characters has gathered in the small English town of Crome for a social outing at the estate of Henry Wimbush. Among the odd, learned guests are a highly prolific writer, an idealist with plans for a "Rational State" and a sensitive poet haplessly in love with Wimbush's niece.

The Crome of the title is an English Country House in which most of the action occurs. Huxley's first novel, Crome Yellow, was published in 1921, and, as a comedy of manners and ideas, its relatively realistic setting and format may come as a surprise to fans of his later works. Some who know only Brave New World may not know that as a 16-year-old planning to enter medicine, Huxley was stricken by a serious eye disease which left him temporarily blind, and which derailed what certainly would have been a prominent career as a physician or scientist.

Crome Yellow has often been called "witty," as well as "talky," and it certainly owes as much to Vanity Fair as it may, surprisingly to some, owe to Tristram Shandy, although one might think that characters such as Mr. Barbecue-Smith and his remarkable writing theories could have some literary antecedents in Lawrence Sterne. Denis Smith, the protagonist of Crome Yellow, attempts to cross wits with the denizens of Crome, particularly Mr. & Mrs. Winbush and the remarkable Mr. Barbecue-Smith--in pursuit of a star-crossed love, and in the face of another girl who possibly loves him.

His teachers are two quite different men: Bruno Rontini, the saintly bookseller, who teaches him about things spiritual; and Uncle Eustace, who introduces him to life's profane pleasures.

The novel that Aldous Huxley himself thought was his most successful at "fusing idea with story," Time Must Have a Stop is part of Huxley's lifelong attempt to explore the dilemmas of twentieth-century man and to create characters who, though ill-equipped to solve the dilemmas, all go stumbling on in their painfully serious comedies (in this novel we have the dead atheist who returns in a seance to reveal what he has learned after death but is stuck with a second-rate medium who garbles his messages). Time Must Have a Stop is one of Huxley's finest achievements.

Selected writings from the author of Brave New World and The Doors of Perception on the role of psychedelics in society.
Includes letters and lectures by Huxley never published elsewhere.
In May 1953 Aldous Huxley took four-tenths of a gram of mescaline. The mystical and transcendent experience that followed set him off on an exploration that was to produce a revolutionary body of work about the inner reaches of the human mind. Huxley was decades ahead of his time in his anticipation of the dangers modern culture was creating through explosive population increase, headlong technological advance, and militant nationalism, and he saw psychedelics as the greatest means at our disposal to "remind adults that the real world is very different from the misshapen universe they have created for themselves by means of their culture-conditioned prejudices." Much of Huxley's writings following his 1953 mescaline experiment can be seen as his attempt to reveal the power of these substances to awaken a sense of the sacred in people living in a technological society hostile to mystical revelations.
Moksha, a Sanskrit word meaning "liberation," is a collection of the prophetic and visionary writings of Aldous Huxley. It includes selections from his acclaimed novels Brave New World and Island, both of which envision societies centered around the use of psychedelics as stabilizing forces, as well as pieces from The Doors of Perception and Heaven and Hell, his famous works on consciousness expansion.

This collaborative effort between Aldous Huxley & Christopher Isherwood, from a film project they were contracted to write in the late 1930s, was discovered in a trunk at Huxley's estate by actress Sharon Stone, who was researching the author's work for a film based on one of his short stories. Jacob's Hands is a novella-length film treatment for a script about a ranch hand who, after learning that he has the gift of healing, becomes disillusioned when he discovers that mending a broken body does not always heal a tormented soul. The slim volume proves both mesmerizing & moving, & the use of the present tense lends an air of innocence & mystery to the story, while the book's emotional undercurrents and passions stir up deeper, troubling responses. Jacob's Hands is a complex, disquieting modern fairy tale unlike anything else by either author, & a fascinating artifact of their Hollywood careers.--Michael Bronski

    From the back cover:

Aldous Huxley, novelist, essayist, mystic, wrote with the force of a Swift and the bite of a Voltaire. These fascinating essays reveal the versatility of his extraordinary mind. They range from subjects such as the greeting-card image of Mother to ancient fertility rites; from the origin of the alphabet to the relation of language to philosophy; from literary censorship to the appalling lack of sexual knowledge in modern society. Exciting, caustic, sometimes shocking, they offer Aldous Huxley's unique view of that continuing paradox - mankind.

The Crows of Pearblossom is the first of two children's stories written by Aldous Huxley, the famous English novelist, essayist & critic. In its most known version, the story was illustrated by Barbara Cooney.

This story, written Christmas of 1944, tells the story of Mr. & Mrs. Crow, who live in a cottonwood tree at Pearblossom. Due to the Rattlesnake living at the bottom of the tree, Mrs. Crow's eggs are never able to hatch. After catching the snake eating her 297th egg that year (she does not work on Sundays), Mrs. Crow requests that Mr. Crow go into the hole & kill the snake. Thinking better of it, Mr. Crow confers with his wise friend, Mr. Owl. Mr. Owl bakes mud into two stone eggs & paints them to resemble Mrs. Crow's eggs. These dummy eggs are left in the nest to trick the Rattlesnake, who unknowingly eats them the next day. When the eggs get to his stomach, they cause the Rattlesnake such pain that he trashes about, tying himself in knots around the branches. Mrs. Crow goes on to hatch "four families of seventeen children each" & "uses the snake as a clothesline on which to hang the little crows' diapers."

He wrote it for his niece, Olivia de Haulleville, who spent long periods of time with him & his wife Maria in their desert house in Llano in Antelope Valley, Mojave Desert, California. They took walks together, & Aldous & Maria would delight in telling stories to the five-year-old girl. When Olivia & her family moved to Pearblossom, four miles from Llano, the Huxleys spent Xmas with the de Haullevilles & made excursions in the desert. Aldous wrote The Crows of Pearblossom during such a holiday in 1944, mentioning in it Olivia's & her brother Siggy's neighbors, Mr. & Mrs. Yost. Fortunately the Yosts kept a copy of the story, as the original manuscript had been returned to Aldous with the request that he illustrate it. The fire that destroyed his house a few years later, & his own death in 1963, left the story nearly in oblivion for many years. By 1967, Olivia had become Mrs. Yorgo Cassapidis, living on the island of Hydra in Greece with a five year old daughter of her own, Melina.

Of the ten thousand letters that Aldous Huxley wrote, only a fraction have been published. Almost forty years after the first appearance of a volume of Huxley's letters, those that were once considered too sensitive for publication can now be included in a wholly new collection. James Sexton's thoughtful selection opens new perspectives on the personal and intellectual lives of one of the giants of modern English prose and of social commentary in our time. Some of the earliest Huxley letters movingly depict his courageous battle with almost total blindness and his resulting unfitness for service in the Great War. Later letters to his patroness, Lady Ottoline Morrell, demonstrate much of the brilliance that would soon gain Huxley an international reputation as one of his generation's major satirists. Perhaps the most important group of letters in this edition is the sparkling correspondence from Huxley to Bloomsbury hostess Mary Hutchinson, revealing Aldous as a witty yet ardent lover.

Over the course of his long career, British writer Aldous Huxley (1894-1963) shifted away from elitist social satires & an uncompromising irreligion toward greater concern for the masses & the use of religious terms & imagery. This change in Huxley's thinking underpins the previously unpublished play Now More Than Ever. Written in 1932-1933 just after Brave New World, Now More Than Ever is a response to the social, economic and political upheavals of its time. Huxley's protagonist is an idealistic financier whose grandiose scheme for industrial renewal drives him to swindling & finally to suicide. His fate allows Huxley to expose the evils he perceives in free-market capitalism while pleading the case for national economic planning & the rationalization of Britain's industrial base. This volume contains the full text of Now More Than Ever, a play hitherto believed to be lost. A "thinker's play," it is the last of Huxley's major writings to be published & immensely important to understanding his development as a writer. The editors of this volume have annotated the play for contemporary readers. Their introduction sets the play in the context of Huxley's intellectual life.

Told with all the humour and keen observation of Huxley's literary craft, this satirical novella by the author of "Brave New World" explores the dual notions of obsession and control. As an acclaimed novelist, Miles Fanning is well used to the unwanted attentions of his fans as he goes about his daily business. Yet little prepares him for the determination of the gauche Pamela Tarn who resolves to enter not only his world, but also his bed. Initially repelled by the enormity of the age gap between them, Fanning vows never to acquiesce, and resorts to his most boorish behaviour in an attempt to break the hold he unwittingly has over her. Yet as they are inexorably drawn together, they embark upon a tempestuous - and ultimately destructive - affair.

(Brave New World) Eine Welt ohne Gewalt, Krieg, Geschichte und wirkliche Gefühle.
--Tina Dobosch
