A group of Mexican-American women come of age in Southern California's burgeoning punk rock scene in the early 1980s and mature into the present.
One of the most humane, graceful and imaginatively inexhaustible artists in American popular culture, Jaime Hernandez has created in Locas one of the great American novels of the last 25 years, graphic or otherwise. Spanning a quarter-century, Locas tells the story of Maggie Chascarrillo, a bisexual, Mexican-American woman attempting to define herself in a community rife with class, race and gender issues.
Maggie's story begins in the early-1980s Southern California rock scene, when it was shifting from the excesses of glitter rock to the gritty basics of punk and new wave. "Hardcore" punk rock came to the fore, and the teenaged Maggie finds herself drawn to the anarchy, energy and diversity of the scene, which in the hands becomes a very real, habitable place populated with authentic human beings rather than stereotypes. She quickly befriends Hopey Glass, a feisty anti-authoritarian punkette who quickly becomes Maggie's on-again, off-again lover and a constant presence in her life throughout the book.
Maggie comes of age in this tumultuous environment, with class and racial tension fueling the rising violence between punks and the already antagonistic LAPD. Hernandez's naturalistic storytelling and mastery of body language and facial expressions, and his pitch-perfect depiction of barrio life all makes for an exhilarating read. His characters are infused with strength, intelligence, independence, imperfection, bitchiness, frailty, obsessiveness, and so much more.
Maggie evolves from an angry young punk into a mature woman. She encounters cruelties large and small and resigns herself to dashed hopes, shattered illusions, and even death with ironic acceptance. Locas presents an incomparable body of work in comics form, created over 20 years (which not coincidentally mirrors Maggie's arc), and told with an uncompromising beauty and grace. As the New York Times Book Review has described it, "These stories have all the visual smarts of film and the narrative smarts of literature....Hernandez specializes in psychological detail; we see both text and subtext immediately	....What better than to open a book that shows there is more going on than we dream of in our workaday philosophies?"

Fifty issues--collected into 15 volumes that total 2,000 pages--the Hernandez brothers' Love and Rockets is an enormous achievement that helped to create a new audience for comics. Notable for their strong female characters and their focus on relationships, rather than on traditional comic-book 'action', the stories collected in this volume, and the rest of the series, show how the comic format can be used to create characters and situations as detailed and compelling as in any novel.
Reviewers have compared GilbertHernandez's work--set in the fictional Latin American town of Palomar-- with that of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Robert Altman. Reading his brother Jaime's work--most of which focuses on a group of Southern California Mexican American women--is like reading Tolstoy, if only Tolstoy had written about twenty-something punk girls. Love and Rockets has certainly earned its legendary reputation among the comic-book cognoscenti, and deserves to be read by an even wider audience. Welcome to the world of Los Bros Hernandez.

The legendary Love & Rockets comic book series returns to bookshelves in a comprehensive series of new paperbacks.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2007, Love and Rockets will finally be released in its most accessible form yet: as a series of compact, thick, affordable, mass-market volumes that present the whole story in perfect chronological order. The 25th anniversary Love and Rockets celebration continues with this, the first of three volumes collecting the adventures of the spunky Maggie, her annoying best friend and sometime lover Hopey, and their circle of friends, including their bombshell friend Penny Century, Maggie's weirdo mentor Izzy—as well as the wrestler Rena Titanon and Maggie's handsome love interest, Rand Race. Maggie the Mechanic collects the earliest, punkiest, most heavily sci-fi stories of Maggie and her circle of friends, and you can see the artist (who drew like an angel from the very first panel) refine his approach: Despite these strong shifts in tone, the stunning art and razor sharp characterizations keep this collection consistent, and enthralling throughout. (Note: A number of these stories were not collected in the hardcover Locas.)

The legendary Love and Rockets comic book series continues in a comprehensive series of new paperbacks.

The 25th anniversary Love and Rockets celebration continues with this, the first of three volumes collecting the adventures of the spunky Maggie; her annoying, pixie-ish best friend and sometime lover Hopey; and their circle of intimates, including the blonde bombshell Penny Century, Maggie's weirdo mentor Izzy—as well as the ageing but still heroic wrestler Rena Titanon, and Maggie's handsome but mostly out-of-reach love interest, Rand Race.

Having abandoned the sci-fi trappings of the earliest Love & Rockets stories (as seen in Maggie the Mechanic, the first volume in this series) Hernandez refined his approach, settling on the more naturalistic environment of the fictional Los Angeles barrio, Hoppers, and the lives of the young Mexican-Americans and punk rockers who live there.

A central story and one of Jaime's absolute peaks is "The Death of Speedy." Such is Jaime's mastery that even though the end of the story is telegraphed from the very title, the downhill spiral of Speedy, the local heartthrob, is utterly compelling and ultimately quite surprising.

In this volume, Maggie also begins her on-again and off-again romance with Ray D., leading to friction and an eventual separation from Hopey (which will form the narrative backbone of "Wigwam Bam," as seen in the upcoming third volume that completes the "Locas trilogy").

A number of these stories—including a whole cycle of wrestling stories starring or co-starring Rena Tinanon, whose return was memorably chronicled in the New York Times serial "La Maggie La Loca," and the supremely unnerving "Izzy meets the Devil" story, "Flies on the Ceiling"—were not collected in the hardcover Locas.

Maggie returns in Hernandez's first book since the smash hit Locas.

Ghost of Hoppers collects for the first time the new adventures of Maggie Chascarrillo, as serialized in the Love & Rockets comic book, and represents Jaime Hernandez's much-anticipated follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2004 magnum opus Locas, which Entertainment Weekly gave an 'A' for its "innovative technique and complex, character-driven stories about Mexican-American life."

Ghost of Hoppers begins with the newly divorced Maggie now working as the resident building-manager of the notorious Capri Apartments deep in the heart of the San Fernando Valley, where imaginary dogs roam its walkways at night, all the air conditioners are broken, and the empty swimming pool is covered with flies. As if the eccentric, oddball tenants weren't weird enough, Maggie's houseguest and old friend Izzy Ortiz shakes things up with her usual nervous breakdowns, nocturnal screaming, and obsessive fly-swatting (sometimes with a knife!). When Izzy makes a guest appearance on a local cable access talk show to promote her book, Maggie meets the voluptuous Vivian the "Frogmouth," a curvaceous, hapless bombshell with a foghorn voice who is despised by Hopey (Maggie's long time on-again-off-again girlfriend, now a bartender sporting an eye patch after one of Vivian's previous bottle-breaking altercations). Maggie finds herself swept up in Vivian's life of random catfights, her mob-connected, knife-wielding stalker ex-boyfriend, and his violently jealous fiancée. Maggie and Vivian eventually strike up a reluctant and awkward romance, and when they set out for Hoppers to retrieve a stolen art object from Izzy, they get a lot more than they bargained for!

About Jaime's work, the New York Times wrote, "These stories have all the visual smarts of film and the narrative smarts of literature. Hernandez specializes in psychological detail; we see both text and subtext immediately. What better than to open a book that shows there is more going on than we dream of in our workaday philosophies?"

Reviewers have compared Gilbert Hernandez's work--set in the fictional Latin American town of Palomar--with that of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Robert Altman.

The third volume of Locas stories from Love and Rockets.

Perla la Locabegins with the graphic novel "Wigwam Bam," arguably Jaime Hernandez's definitive statement on the post-punk culture. As Maggie, Hopey, and the rest of the Locas prowl Los Angeles, the East Coast, and parts in between trying to recapture the carefree spirit of those early days—except for Izzy, who tries to flee and ultimately, ironically, is the one who finds Hopey (and who unlocks the secret of Maggie and Hopey's relationship.) "Wigwam Bam" brings us up to date on all the members of Jaime's extensive cast of characters and then drops a narrative bomb on Hopey (and us) in the very last pages.

Split up from Hopey yet again, Maggie bounces back and forth between a one-laundromat town in Texas (the "Chester Square" that serves as the title of two of the strongest stories in the book), where she has to contend with both her own inner demons and a murderous hooker, and Camp Vicki, where she has to fend off her aunt Vicki's attempts to make her a professional wrestler and the unwanted advances of the amorous wrestling champ-to-be, Gina. As usual, Jaime spotlights a wide range of headstrong female characters, including Maggie's sister Esther and her cousin Xochitl; Penny Century, Hopey, and Danita show up as well, as does Rena Titañon (recently seen in Jaime's New York Times serial "La Maggie la Loca"), who, joined by the wrestler El Diablo, dominates the finale with a rousing free-for-all slugfest against six armed thugs. And what's this about Maggie getting married?

Jaime Hernandez (who, along with his brother Gilbert, created the most influential alternative comic book of the last 20 years in Love and Rockets) presents the first collection of his current ongoing comic book series, spotlighting the first four issues. A critical and commercial smash-hit in the world of alternative comic books, the stories collected here earned Hernandez the coveted Best Artist Harvey Award in 1998. Although Penny Century refers to one of Hernandez's most popular characters - a voluptuous platinum-blonde heiress whose wealth affords her the luxury of indulging her fantasy life as a costumed superheroine-cum-bon vivant - the title Penny Century functions more as a catch-phrase for the optimistic mood of the series, in which anything can and does happen, where seemingly unrelated stories, when read together, give texture to a larger canvas.

Reviewers have compared Gilbert Hernandez's work--set in the fictional Latin American town of Palomar--with that of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Robert Altman. Love and Rockets: New Stories #1 reboots the beloved ongoing "Love and Rockets" comic into a fat, all-new annual graphic novel length package.

Jaime launches the new format with a story that's unusual even for him... A full-on, pulse-pounding super-hero yarn! Maggie's longtime friend Penny Century has finally realized her longtime dream of acquiring super-powers, but at a terrible personal cost. Now she rampages through the galaxy, half mad with grief, and a motley group of super-heroes assembles to try to stop her -- led by Maggie's girlfriend Angel and her mysterious neighbor Alarma, and involving a number of characters longtime Love and Rockets fans will delight in recognizing.

The epic-length 50-page story (only the first half of the saga!) combines Jaime's razor sharp characterization and superlative art with wildly inventive, Kirby-style slam-bang super-hero action.

Then Gilbert Hernandez explodes with a similarly generous helping of his fantastically creative one-shot short stories: "Papa" (a turn-of-the-century story involving a traveling businessman); "The New Adventures of Duke and Sammy" (super-powered Martin and Lewis impostors in outer space); "Victory Dance" (Into the Wild as re-imagined by Beto); "Chiro el Indio" (written by third brother Mario Hernandez); "Never Say Never" (a kangaroo gets lucky in Las Vegas; and the mysterious wordless mood piece simply titled "?".

One hundred pages of Jaime, Gilbert and Mario Hernandez at the peak of their powers: this is a major graphic-novel event!

Love and Rockets' most popular characters in a new hardcover collection.
Armed with a passion for pop culture and punk rock, Jaime Hernandez (along with his brothers, Gilbert and Mario) was one of the first comic book artists to give a voice to minorities and women in the medium's 70-year history. His character-driven stories primarily explore the life of a three-dimensional Mexican-American woman from a fictional barrio of Los Angeles, Maggie Chascarillo, one of the most complex and recognizable characters in the history of Mexican-American fiction. Hernandez is the co-creator of Love & Rockets, which along with RAW magazine defined the modern literary comics movement of the post-underground generation and celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. This first new Jaime Hernandez book since the splashy return of Love and Rockets in 2001 spotlights a wide-ranging and funky group of stories from L&R and Hernandez's comic Penny Century. The continuing trials and tribulations of Maggie and Hopey are featured in "Election Day," "Everybody Loves Me, Baby" (featuring extensive flashbacks to their early punk days, a reader's favorite) and the surreal dream story "The Race." We also check up with Maggie's ex-boyfriend Ray D., who is the recipient of a series of increasingly rude surprises when his old buddy Doyle shows up, somewhat the worse for wear, in "The Frog Mouth." Plus "Bay of Threes," which chronicles the romance of Penny Century and H.R. Costigan from (virtually) cradle to grave. 96 pages b/w illustrations.

The Love & Rockets library continues with this special volume.

To a very great extent, Love & Rockets is synonymous with Hoppers' Maggie & Hopey and Palomar's Luba & Carmen & Heraclio & Tonantzin... but there was always more to L&R than that. Amor y Cohetes finally collects together in one convenient package all the non-Maggie and non-Palomar stories by all three Hernandez Brothers from that classic first, 50-issue Love and Rockets series—a dizzying array of styles and approaches that re-confirms these groundbreaking cartoonists' place in the history of comics.

The book leads off with Gilbert's original 40-page sci-fi epic "BEM" from 1981's very first issue of Love & Rockets, featuring a very different Luba and a much looser, Heavy Metal and Marvel Comics-inspired way of storytelling.

Other stories include Jaime's charming "Rocky and Fumble" series starring a planet-hopping girl and her robot; stunning one-shots such as Gilbert's Frida Kahlo biography "Frida" and his shocking autobiographical fantasia "My Love Book"; Mario's genre thrillers which take place "Somewhere in California"; Gilbert's brutally dystopian "Errata Stigmata" stories; the playful "Hernandez Satyricon," with Gilbert drawing Jaime's characters, and "War Paint," with Jaime trying out Palomar; Gilbert's light-hearted "Music for Monsters" starring Bang and Inez; and even a fantastical "non-continuity" Maggie and Hopey story "Easter Hunt" by Jaime that didn't fit into the other books.

Amor y Cohetes, the seventh (and concluding, for now) volume in the new "Complete Love & Rockets" series of compact, affordable paperbacks, shows a very different side of Los Bros Hernandez.

This second omnibus volume of "Locas" tales by Jaime Hernandez - collecting over a dozen years' worth of stories from the award-winning Love and Rockets comics - picks up shortly after Maggie and Hopey's long-awaited reunion at the end of the Locas hardcover. Even though her love life remains chaotic, Hopey takes her first steps toward responsible adulthood with a real job, while divorced Maggie manages a fleabag apartment building, where she continues to wrestle with the demons of her past - especially in the stunning graphic novel-length "Ghost of Hoppers" with its hallucinatory dream finale. Ray, still in love with Maggie, hangs out with the bombshell "Frogmouth," whose ties to local thugs causes trouble. Of course, Maggie, Hopey and Ray's paths continue to intersect in Jaime's increasingly complex, always richly imagined world, along with those of characters both old (Izzy Ortiz, Penny Century) and new (the jockette Angel, the mysterious superheroine Alarma).

In the summer of 2008, Fantagraphics Books brought the classic Love and Rockets brand to a whole new audience with the hugely successful first volume of the trade-paperback sized Love and Rockets: New Stories. A year later, the Hernandez Brothers are back with the second eye-popping volume. This volume gets off to a flying start with "Hypnotwist," Gilbert's 39-page wordless epic about a beautiful, leggy redhead's surreal journey into a night filled with mysterious shady characters, dreamlike violence, and sparkling retro spike heels. But is it real, or something else? Then, the concluding 50-page chapter of Jaime's acclaimed superhero mash-up "Ti-Girls Adventures," our protagonist Boot Angel learns more hard lessons about becoming a superheroine. Eventually, just about the entire cast gets together in Maggie's tiny, messy one-bedroom apartment. Beto concludes with "Chest Fever," in which a group of friends venture to Las Vegas, which isn't quite what they expected...

How do they do it? How do Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez keep topping themselves issue after issue, year after year in their award-winning comic Love and Rockets? Answer: Through hard work, constant experimentation, and page after page of diligent sketching. The second volume in the Love and Rockets Sketchbook series is a fascinating look into the work processes of two of comics' most talented artists, allowing readers to witness the creative pricess, from the earliest ideas through roughed-out pages all the way to finished artwork (including several completed sequences that were edited out of continuity, seen here for the first time!) - plus dozens of pages of beautiful character sketches, as well as the requisite sketchbook section of just goofing around, all annotated by Los Bros. A wonderful gift idea for Love and Rockets fans.

Girls, Girls, Girls! Step right up and don't be shy. This intimate, accordion-folded and concertina-bound portfolio of 20 never-before-seen "Pinup Girl" portraits from the world's most respected cartoonists opens up to reveal more than 10 feet of original and subversively erotic "girly" comics. Featuring R. Crumb's "Lela," a robust vision of overflowing femininity, Dan Clowes' "Doris," the last girl on earth, Adrian Tomine's "Yuki," a young woman captured in a serene domestic moment, and Gary Panter's "Cave Girl," a menacing yet alluring female amid raptors and pterodactyls, this highly collectible volume is not simply a collection of traditional pinups, but a string of 20 "mini-narratives" set in environments as disparate as the bedroom and the bowling alley, the circus or the Cenozoic. Includes work by Rick Altergott, Peter Bagge, Johnathan Bennett, Ivan Brunetti, Charles Burns, Robert Crumb, Daniel Clowes, Kim Deitch, Sammy Harkham, Tim Hensley, Gilbert Hernandez, Jaime Hernandez, Tony Millionaire, Mitch O'Connell, Gary Panter, Archer Prewitt, Ron Rege, Jr., Richard Sala, Adrian Tomine and Dan Zettwoch. The portfolio comes in a transparent plastic box.

When Mister X hit the shelves twenty-five years ago, no one had ever seen anything like it - a fusion of film noir, Art Deco, and German Expressionism channeled through the talents of the greatest up-and-coming artists of the day. The story of a utopian city with architecture that drove its inhabitants mad and the never-sleeping architect who quested tirelessly for a cure, Mister X captivated a generation of comics fans and creators, transforming the landscape of their chosen medium forever. Still as inspiring and compelling as the first time it saw print, the entire run of Mister X written by Dean Motter gets the deluxe treatment in this volume, every page of its groundbreaking artwork painstakingly restored.
