"An incoherent nightmare of sex..." That was The Westminster Gazette's description of Arthur Machen's first book, The Great God Pan, upon its publication in 1894.
An unwittingly complimentary description for one of the greatest works of weird horror and decadence, in which Machen unfurls with his singular eye for the bizarre and macabre the tale of a young girl cursed by her unnatural parentage to become a creature of shape-shifting polysexual demi-human evil. Illustrated by Austin Osman Spare.

You can't properly call yourself a gourmand (or even a minor foodie) until you've digested Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin's delectable 1825 treatise, The Physiology of Taste: Or, Meditations on Transcendental Gastronomy. Brilliantly and lovingly translated in 1949 by M.F.K. Fisher (herself the doyenne of 20th-century food writing), the book offers the Professor's meditations not just on matters of cooking and eating, but extends to sleep, dreams, exhaustion, and even death (which he defines as the "complete interruption of sensual relations"). Brillat-Savarin, whose genius is in the examination and discussion of food, cooking, and eating, proclaims that "the discovery of a new dish does more for human happiness than the discovery of a star."
Chocoholics will be satisfied to know that "carefully prepared chocolate is as healthful a food as it is pleasant ... that it is above all helpful to people who must do a great deal of mental work...." He examines the erotic properties of the truffle ("the truffle is not a positive aphrodisiac; but it can, in certain situations, make women tenderer and men more agreeable"), the financial influence of the turkey (apparently quite a prize in 19th-century Paris), and the level of gourmandise among the various professions (bankers, doctors, writers, and men of faith are all predestined to love food). Just as engrossing as the text itself are M.F.K. Fisher's lively, personal glosses at the end of every chapter, which make up almost a quarter of the book. These two are soulmates separated by centuries, and Fisher's fondness for the Professor comes through on every page. As she notes at the end, "I have yet to be bored or offended, which is more than most women can say of any relationship, either ghostly or corporeal." --Rebecca A. Staffel

A superb collection, a splendid and much-needed book. Anderson has cleared away the dross & shown us the golden roots of fantasy before it became a genre.--Michael Moorcock, author of The Eternal Champion
Many of today's top names in fantasy acknowledge J.R.R. Tolkien as the author whose work inspired them to create their own epics. But which writers influenced Tolkien? In a collection destined to become a classic, internationally recognized Tolkien expert Douglas A. Anderson, editor of The Annotated Hobbit, has gathered the fiction of the many gifted authors who sparked Tolkien's imagination. Included are Andrew Lang's romantic swashbuckler, The Story of Sigurd, which features magic rings & a ferocious dragon; an excerpt from E. A. Wyke-Smith's The Marvelous Land of Snergs, about creatures who were precursors to hobbits; & a never-before-published gem by David Lindsay, author of A Voyage to Arcturus, a novel that Tolkien praised highly both as a thriller & as a work of philosophy, religion & morality.
In stories packed with magical journeys, conflicted heroes & terrible beasts, this volume is one that no fan of fantasy should be without. These tales may inspire a new generation of creative writers.

Some of the finest horror stories ever written. Arthur Machen had a profound impact upon H.P. Lovecraft and the group of stories that would later become known as the Cthulhu Mythos. This first volume of Chaosium's Arthur Machen collection begins with the chilling "The Three Impostors" in its complete form, including the rarely seen sections "The Decorative Imagination" and "The Novel of the Iron Maid." Rounding out the first volume are "The Great God Pan," "The Inmost Light," and "The Shining Pyramid," all are excellent tales. Introduction by S.T. Joshi.
This book is part of an expanding collection of Cthulhu Mythos horror fiction and related topics. Call of Cthulhu fiction focuses on single entities, concepts, or authors significant to readers and fans of H.P. Lovecraft.

Born in Wales in 1863, Machen was a London journalist for much of his life.Among his fiction, he may be best known for the allusive, haunting title story of this book, &"The White People", which H.P. Lovecraft thought to be the second greatest horror story ever written (after Blackwood's "The Wilows"). This wide ranging collection also includes the crystalline novelette "A Fragment of Life", & "The Angel of Mons" (a story so widely reported that it was imagined true by millions in the grim initial days of the Great War), and "The Great Return" telling of the stately visions which graced the Welsh village of Llantristant for a time. Four more tales and the poetical "Ornaments in Jade" are all finely told. This is the second Machen volume edited by S. T. Joshi and published by Chaosium. The first volume was The Three Impostors.

Lucian Taylor is damned ? either through contact with an erotically pagan faerie world or through something degenerate in his own nature. He thinks of the damning thing inside him as a ?faun.? He becomes a writer, and when he moves to London he becomes trapped by the increasing reality of the dark imaginings of this creature within him, which become increasingly real. The portrait of a doomed artist ? a man not unlike Machen himself.

"It is all more strange than I fancied," he said at last. "It was queer enough what I saw; a man is sauntering along a quiet, sober, everyday London street, a street of grey houses and blank walls, and there, for a moment, a veil seems drawn aside, and the very fume of the pit steams up through the flagstones, the ground glows, red-hot, beneath his feet, and he seems to hear the hiss of the infernal caldron. A man flying in mad terror for his life, and furious hate pressing hot on his steps with knife drawn ready; here, indeed, is horror; but what is all that to what you have told me? I tell you, Phillipps, I see the plot thicken; our steps will henceforth be dogged with mystery, and the most ordinary incidents will teem with significance. You may stand out against it, and shut your eyes, but they will be forced open; mark my words, you will have to yield to the inevitable. A clue, tangled if you like, has been placed by chance in our hands; it will be our business to follow it up. As for the guilty person or persons in this strange case, they will be unable to escape us, our nets will be spread far and wide over this great city, and suddenly, in the streets and places of public resort, we shall in some way or other be made aware that we are in touch with the unknown criminal. Indeed I almost fancy I see him slowly approaching this quiet square of yours; he is loitering at street corners, wandering, apparently without aim, down far-reaching thoroughfares, but all the while coming nearer and nearer, drawn by an irresistible magnetism, as ships were drawn to the Loadstone Rock in the Eastern tale."

I took a tram to the location of the disaster; a raw and hideous shed with a walled yard about it, and a shut gate. The roof was quite undamaged -- this had had been a strange accident. There had been an explosion of sufficient violence to kill work-people in the building, but the building itself showed no wounds or scars.

I was afraid. Then beyond the woods there were other hills round in a great ring, but I had never seen any of them; it all looked black, and everything had a voor over it. It was all so still and silent, and the sky was heavy and grey and sad, like a wicked voorish dome in Deep Dendo.

There! Can you imagine what would happen if one submitted the above as an outline or sketch of a possible plot to our really modern writers, the veritable Georgians? I don't think that they would be cross, or snap your head off, or wonder audibly what theatre put on transpontine melodrama in these days, or say it was interesting to find that Sue still found readers. There would be nothing violent of this kind; only the slight movement of a weary brow, before the conversation flowed back to its proper channel of "complexes" and skin-disease. Because you see, the Georgian novelist knows that the stuff of which we have been talking is not Life, has no relation to Life, and in a word, doesn't happen.

I was speaking the Xu language, but I only remember a very few of the words, as it was about the little white faces that used to look at me when I was lying in my cradle."
  From The White People
This volume contains two of Arthur Machen's best stories: The Red Hand, a murder mystery involving flint weapons, treasure, and the chalking of a red hand upon a wall; and The White People, a story thought by H.P. (Jacques) Giacomo Girolamo Casanova de Seingalt (1725-1798) was a Venetian adventurer and author. His main book Histoire de Ma Vie (History of My Life), part autobiography and part memoir, is regarded as one of the most authentic sources of the customs and norms of European social life during the 18th century. So famous a womanizer was the Italian-born libertine Giacomo Casanova that, a full two centuries after his death, his name remains synonymous with the art of seduction. But for the years he spent in the employ of Count Waldstein of Bohemia as a librarian, Casanova, "the world's greatest lover" - at one-time the company of European royalty, popes and cardinals, and man known to the likes of Voltaire, Goethe and Mozart - would have been consigned to obscurity. He began to think about writing his memoirs around 1780 and began in earnest by 1789, as "the only remedy to keep from going mad or dying of grief". The first draft was completed by July 1792, and he spent the next six years revising it.

Arthur Machen (1863-1947), who achieved significant fame in the 1920s, was a general man of letters with echoes of Samuel Johnson, an important influence on later fantasy writers from H.P. Lovecraft to Ray Bradbury, and a great adventurer of the spirit. Montgomery Evans II, a wealthy book collector, and one of a small circle of Machen's friends and benefactors, carefully collected and mounted in two notebooks nearly 200 letters he had received from the Welsh writer. Sue Strong Hassler and Donald M. Hassler have arranged and edited material from the notebooks to reveal the story of a literary friendship between an old master, who knew he was a "master" and who continually valued what he called the "ecstasy" of fine writing, and a would-be writer and believer. From the 1920s on, literary materials by Machen had been popular with book collectors. Machen wrote an enormous number of letters, like these to Evans, in which he commented on literature, history (he was fascinated by the 18th century), cultural and political events ins England and America, publishing, bookselling and booksellers, his own writing, travel and food. Machen discusses many literary figures, including Robert Hillyer, Doroth Parker, Gilbert Seldes, H.L. Mencken, Sylvia Townsend Warner, James Branch Cabell, Holbrook Jackson, George Lacy, Robert Louis Stevenson, Sinclair Lewis, Rudyard Kipling and Vincent Starrett. The fullness of his correspondence provides a valuable insight into the literary life of Machen and his circle, which flourished around London from the 20s through to the Second World War. Machen's work is important not only as a source of ideas about writing, but also as a reflection of literary changes and as the critical foundation for modern fantasy. The Hasslers, in their analyses of the letters, explore Machen's versatility as a writer and offer an interpretation of his group and its opposition to literary modernism. This extensive publication of his letters should fascinate fans of horror fiction, for whom Machen is an early classic, and scholars of fantasy, science fiction, and literature in general. Book collectors and historians of bookselling and collecting should also find much of interest here.

Two full-length novels combined in one book.

About the Author
Arthur Machen (1863-1947) was a Welsh journalist, novelist, and short story writer. He is best known for his supernatural, fantasy, and horror fiction. He translated several books from French including Memoirs of Casanova. His lively English style generated demand of his translated editions for many years. Many consider the novels The House of Souls and The Hill of Dreams to be his best work.

He was a close friend to the writer and occultist A. E. Waite. Through Waite’s influence, Machen joined athe Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. However, Machen’s involvement with the organization was not lasting. Machen investigated Celtic Christianity, the Holy Grail and King Arthur and wrote about those topics in Lord Alfred Douglas’s The Academy. He theorized that the legends of the Grail were based on rites of the Celtic Church. These ideas also featured strongly his novel The Secret Glory. This was first use in fiction of the idea of the Grail surviving into modern times. This idea has resurfaced in Dan Brown's writings and in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

A new collection of blood-blanching chillers by the famed authority on evil and the occult! Arthur Machen, a longtime connoisseur of the mystical forces of the supernatural, spins his tales of horror with a bizarre, shadowy quality certain to ensnare any reader's mind.
Machen was a relentless and educated seeker of truths in the sinister world beyond this life. His personal obsession was to delve to the very core of the malign, elemental forces that destroy modern man.
As a teller of tales, Machen was a master of technique. His craft and precision of language evoke dark, lingering vibrations from the ancient world. And it is a frightening world where fiendish spells suffocate unsuspecting souls.
Are you strong enough for this voyage backward into the fathoms of evil?

Contents:

The Novel of the Black Seal • (1895) • novelette
The Novel of the White Powder • (1895) • shortstory
The Bowmen • (1914) • shortstory
The Happy Children • (1920) • shortstory
The Bright Boy • (1936) • novelette
Out of the Earth • (1915) • shortstory
N • (1936) • novelette
Children of the Pool • (1936) • shortstory
The Terror • (1916) • novel (aka The Terror: A Mystery)

Why is studious, bookish, quiet Lawrence Hillyer suddenly reviled and shunned by his fellow holiday-makers at a genteel Pembrokeshire coastal resort? Why is staunch and respectable Mrs Jolly, a landlady of many years seniority, all at once the source of police interest and knowing looks from her neighbours? What weird projectile smashed suburban Mr Horncastle's domed glasshouse from such an improbable distance? What is the inner secret of the Reverend Thomas Hampole's modest little book recounting his rambles in lesser-known London? What draws an eminent nerve specialist to study all this with such deep interest?
Arthur Machen includes within the pages of The Green Round all of the many interests and preoccupations of his writing career. His hero, Hillyer, takes a holiday in West Wales and visits the “Green Round”, a mysterious natural hollow. He soon finds that he has acquired an unwanted shadow, and the novel becomes a study in disclocated parallel realities. With a perceptive new introduction by Machen's most recent biographer, Mark Valentine.
