Goethe, the founder of the poetry of experience, created a body of poetry that is unsurpassed in lucidity of speech and imagery and in instinct for melody and rhythm. Nonetheless, many of his poems are relatively unknown to English-speaking audiences, partly because of the difficulties they have posed to translators. This volume contains translations, side by side with the German originals, of Goethe's major poems--all prepared by eminent American and English writers, and all attesting to his poetic genius.

Goethe's most complex and profound work, Faust was the effort of the great poet's entire lifetime. Written over 60 years, it can be read as a document of Goethe's moral and artistic development. Faust is made available to the English reader in a completely new translation that communicates both its poetic variety and its many levels of tone. The language is present-day English, and Goethe's formal and rhythmic variety is reproduced in all its richness.

The reflections on art and literature that Goethe produced throughout his life are the premise and corollary of his work as poet, novelist, and man of science. This volume contains such important essays as "On Gothic Architecture," "On the Laocoon Group," and "Shakespeare: A Tribute." Several works in this collection appear for the first time unabridged and in fresh translations.

Alchemic symbolism is prominent in many of Goethe's works, and it is particularly abundant in the tales of self-mastery and transformation presented in this collection. Included here are new translations of "Fairy Tale" ("Marchen"), Goethe's alchemical allegory; "The Counselor" and "The New Melusina," stories of temptation and the tests of love; "The Good Woman," a curious discourse on aesthetics and the rights of women; and the lyrical prose masterpiece "Novelle." Here also for the first time in English is "The Magical Flute," Goethe's sequel to Mozart's opera, with themes of initiation, the magical power of music, and liberated genius.

Indeed, Rudolf Steiner was so deeply impressed by Goethe’s fairy tale, that he used it as the model for his own first mystery drama, The Portal of Initiation. It is said that, prior to its first performance, he told friends, "I know how long and deeply you have loved Goethe’s fairy tale, and today I am happy to tell you that you will see it performed on stage."

The twelve paintings in this book represent the soul experiences of the "Youth" in the fairy tale. These images are the fruit of an intense collaboration between the artist Hermann Linde and Rudolf Steiner, who commissioned the work. Steiner visited Linde’s studio every day and gave him detailed indications for the treatment of the various motifs. The result is this beautifully illustrated, full-color book.

This is a fairy tale for meditation—and for building bridges of the soul and spirit.

So gut wie gar nichts erinnert in diesem Hörstück an einen Reiseführer. Tukurs Auswahl an Gesprächspartnern und Plätzen, die er vorstellt, ist sehr persönlich, manchmal auch ungewöhnlich… Genau das hebt seine Präsentation auch von anderen ab. Und die Stimmen etwa von Geoffrey Humphries, dem Maler, Holly Snapp, der Galeristin, oder des Architekten Andreas Brandt fügen sich zu einem authentischen, wenig abgenutzten Bild Venedigs zusammen. Harte szenische Schnitte und das italienische Original mit Synchronübersetzung, ergänzt durch einen sehr italienisch klingenden Geräuschpegel vermitteln den Eindruck des Fragmentarischen, nicht Fertigen.

Ulrich Tukur ist ein Multitalent, ein anerkannter deutschen Schauspieler. Sein Debüt gab er 1982 in dem Film Die weiße Rose. Danach ging es mit Ulrich Tukurs Karriere steil aufwärts. Figuren voller Brüche und Abgründe sind sein Markenzeichen. Zudem ist er Musiker und präsentiert mit seinen „Rhythmus Boys“ seit 1995 erfolgreich Lieder aus den 30er bis 50er Jahren. Seit 1999 fühlt sich der Mann ohne Führerschein in der Stadt, wo der Verfall salonfähig ist, wohl.

Fazit: Eine liebevoll und professionell inszenierte Huldigung Venedigs. Mit einem sprechenden, singenden und Interviews führenden Ulrich Tukur. Das wunderschöne Booklet mit Aufnahmen der Menschen, mit denen Tukur spricht, rundet die Komposition ab!

Werther was an important novel of the Sturm und Drang period in German literature, and it also influenced the later Romantic literary movement.
The book made Goethe one of the first true international literary celebrities. Toward the end of his life, a personal visit to Weimar became crucial to any young man's tour of Europe.
