"Murder is the greatest aberration of human nature, it brings out some ingenious subterfuges," remarks Inspector Jefe Javier Falcón, as he ponders a series of ambiguously motivated and ostensibly unconnected suicides in The Vanished Hands, British author Robert Wilson's sequel to his haunting 2003 novel, The Blind Man of Seville.
  It's the summer of 2002, more than a year after the shattering events recounted in Blind Man, and Falcón, the chief homicide cop in Seville, Spain, has finally regained his confidence and powers of concentration. Still, he cannot fathom why Rafael Vega, a construction company honcho (and recreational butcher), should have smothered his younger, unstable wife in bed, then chugged a fatal draught of drain cleaner. Is there any connection between this tragedy and the disappearance of the Vegas's Ukranian gardener, or money laundering by the local Russian mafia? Can Rafael Vega's demise be related to his distrust of the U.S. government or to a note found in his hand, with its seeming allusion to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks? As Falcón questions the Vegas's suburban neighbors, he discovers one couple linked to the slaying of an Iranian carpet-dealer in New York, and another nearby resident, renowned actor Pablo Ortega, whose grown son is in prison for kidnapping and abusing an 8-year-old boy. Yet these scandals aren't obviously helpful to Falcón in solving the Vega case. Nor do they explain why those first deaths are soon followed by Ortega's drowning in a cesspool, the suicidal leap of an aging child-crimes investigator, and Russian mafia threats against Falcón.
  Wilson doesn't exploit Seville's exotic setting so well here as he did in Blind Man, and it can be challenging to follow this sequel's political backstory. However, the author more than makes up for these weaknesses with the depth of his psychological explorations, the ways in which he taunts his police with justice slightly beyond their reach, and a patient storytelling pace that enhances investigative revelations. Falcón remains a potent and pivotal figure, his traumas in the last book being replaced in these pages by personal dramas (three different women tug at the inspector jefe's heart, feeding his hope without depleting his loneliness). Founded in mendacity, fraught with betrayals, The Vanished Hands maintains a firm grip on the reader from its start. --J. Kingston Pierce

    <div>From the author of the national bestseller A Small Death in Lisbon and The Company of Strangers comes Wilson's compelling first novel, never before available in the United States. Bruce Medway's existence as a fixer and troubleshooter had been tough, but never life-threatening until he crossed paths with the mighty Madame Severnou. His life becomes even more complicated by his search for a missing fellow expat, Steven Kershaw. Against a backdrop of political disruption and endemic official corruption, Medway pursues the elusive phantom of Kershaw.
Instruments of Darkness powerfully evokes the atmosphere, politics, and people of West Africa. With Medway's ironic voice, flashes of humor that may recall Raymond Chandler, and unforgettable characters, this compulsively readable thriller is the beginning of a remarkable series.
</div>

    In The Ignorance of Blood, the final book of Robert Wilson’s sterling Javier Falcón sequence, his doughty police inspector is in the middle of a battle between Russian mafia groups. He has made a promise to the inhabitants of Seville that he will track down those behind a bombing which has wrecked a pre-school building, and killed many -- including children. Falcón is stumped until a connection with the Russian mob becomes apparent after a fatal car accident. But things are complicated for Falcón when his closest friend, the Moroccan Yacoub Diori (who spies for the Spanish intelligence agency), is blackmailed by a group of terrorists into whose organisation he has inveigled himself.
In The Ignorance of Blood, Robert Wilson demonstrates once again his effortless skill at orchestrating a variety of elements: vividly drawn, fully-rounded characters, complex and intriguing plotting (with endemic corruption and the impact of the past on the present recurring themes), and – perhaps most piquant of all – a strong and atmospheric sense of place; few novels have conjured up the sultry city of Seville with the skill on offer here.
This, regrettably, is the final book in Wilson’s much-admired Falcón quartet will inspire a duality of feeling in readers who have keenly followed the sequence: satisfaction that Wilson has written such a satisfyingfinis to the quartet, and regret that this is to be our last time in the company of the intriguing Javier Falcón. But we can at least anticipate further achievements from the highly talented Robert Wilson. --Barry Forshaw

    <div>In this second novel of the Bruce Medway series, our hero, a go-between and "fixer" for traders in steamy West Africa, smells trouble when a porn merchant asks him to deliver a video at a secret location. Things look up, though, when he's hired to act as minder to Ron Collins, a spoiled playboy looking for diamonds in the Ivory Coast. Medway thinks this could be the answer to his cashflow crisis. But when the video delivery leads to a shootout and the discovery of a mutilated body, he wants out. Obligations keep Medway fixed in the Ivory Coast and he is soon caught up in a terrifying cycle of violence. Unless he can get to the bottom of the mystery, Medway knows that for the savage killer out there in the African night, he is the next target.
</div>

    <div>In the 1800s, the young Clarence King was an icon of the new America: a man of adventure and intellect, a flash-in-the-pan celebrity who combined science and exploration with romanticism and charm. Robert Wilson’s biography, The Explorer King, vividly depicts King’s daredevil feats including his journey to the highest peak of the Sierra Nevada, and uncovers the reasons for the shocking decline he suffered after his days on the American frontier.

Through King’s own rollicking tales, some true, some embroidered, of scaling previously unclimbed mountain peaks, of surviving a monster blizzard near Yosemite, of escaping ambush and capture by Indians, of being chased on horseback for two days by angry bandits, Robert Wilson offers a powerful combination of adventure, history, and nature writing, he also provides the bigger picture of the West at this time. Ultimately, King himself would come to symbolize the collision of science and business, one of the sources of his downfall. Fascinating and extensive, The Explorer King movingly portrays the America of the nineteenth century and the man who—for better or worse—typified the soul of the era.
</div>

The three plays collected in The Theatre of Images challenge the conventional understanding of performance. In Pandering to the Masses: A Misrepresentation, Richard Foreman creates a reality onstage that reflects his own reality--focusing on familiar, everyday events with the addition of recorded voice and projected image. A Letter for Queen Victoria, by Robert Wilson, is an opera without singers, with verbal declamations instead of arias. Represented in comic-book form, The Red Horse Animation by Lee Breuer demonstrates the play's reliance on cinematic techniques in its composition.

When astronomers today look up at the night sky they picture a spectacular and infinite universe--full of pulsars, quasars, and black holes and ruled by arcane laws of space and time. Once, ancient astronomers looked up and saw only points of light tracing calm movements across the heavens. But they too were moved to wonder about the meaning of what they saw. In Astronomy through the Ages, Sir Robert Wilson tells the story of how our understanding of the universe has evolved through history--of how the sedate and stable star field of ancient times has been replaced by the vast and explosive universe we know today.

Wilson, one of the most distinguished astronomers of the twentieth century, begins by tracing the astronomical studies of the ancient Babylonians, Egyptians, and Greeks and reviews important early contributions from India, China, and the Islamic world. He explains the development of the sun-centered model of the universe in Renaissance Europe. He then tells how the development of the telescope, photography, and spectroscopy pushed back the limits of the observable universe and eventually brought astronomy into the twentieth century. Finally, he describes the rapid advances in radio and space astronomy and other methods over the past fifty years that have ushered in a new "golden age" of astronomy. These advances have not only allowed observation of deep space but also enabled scientists to unlock the secrets of the universe itself from its origin to its possible fate. Wilson himself has played an important role in these discoveries as the developer of one of the most successful astronomical satellites ever launched, the International Ultraviolet Explorer.

While focusing on the human side of astronomical discovery, Wilson also provides readers with a basic understanding of difficult concepts, explaining relativity and quantum mechanics without using technical language or mathematics. Remarkable in its scope and clarity,Astronomy through the Ages provides an accessible view of historical discoveries and modern advances and shows why excitement about astronomy is even greater today than when Galileo first gazed in wonder at the rings of Saturn.

    A Certain Somewhere collects thirty essays originally published in Preservation magazine. Writers were asked to describe a place that is significant to them, to decipher what makes it mysterious and meaningful, and to examine the nature of attachment to a specific locale.

Gathered here are pieces by writers of all kinds---essayists, novelists, literary critics, poets---on disparate and enthralling places, from Madison Smartt Bell on Haiti to Thomas Mallon on the New York Public Library. These writers examine how they came to invest a part of themselves in the places they have inhabited, and how these places have consequently inhabited them. Most of all, the writers transport you to places that have enchanted them and will charm you as well.

This multifarious assembly offers readers a sophisticated armchair-travel experience, replete with insights into culture, politics, architecture, and history. Along the way, readers will also enjoy a glimpse at the inner lives of some of our finest writers.

    The campaigns that included the pivotal battles of Eylau and Friedland

Sir Robert Wilson saw the campaign in Poland from the Russian side of the conflict. Not only was he a representative of the British government-and so had an inevitable antipathy towards Napoleon's French forces-but he had also developed a strong affection for his Russian hosts. Nevertheless, he has done his best to include within his work-partisan though the elements that are the product of his pen may be-an overview of the campaign designed with fair brokerage in mind. His book is a work of separate parts and includes his own impressions of the campaign he witnessed, the documents portraying the Russian and Prussian perspective on the same events together with all the bulletins of the French Army concerning those events. In addition, Wilson has included a description and appraisal of the Russian Army taking each arm in turn-passages covering the Cossacks make essential reading for any student interested in the period. Here is the complete Polish campaign including the battles that contributed towards the everlasting fame of the Napoleonic epoch.

Sport and leisure managers need to understand the financial side of their industry in order to offer the most cost-effective facilities and to make sound business decisions. However, to the non-expert the language and practice of finance is often bewildering and perceived as complicated, difficult and impenetrable. This textbook guides the reader through the maze of financial terms and concepts, illustrating theory with examples drawn specifically from sport-based contexts to make this the most relevant, transparent and helpful handbook for students of leisure management available.

Written by experts in accounting and sport management, this book enables readers to work through the subject at their own pace, with case studies, worked examples and self-tests to ensure students can apply their knowledge to industry-specific situations. Ideal for students on sport and leisure management courses, this book will also be valuable to practising managers who need a quick-reference guide to everyday financial questions.

    Celebrating his first night in the President's House, John Adams offered the following toast, "May none but honest and wise men ever rule under this house." To which his wife Abigail replied, "Remember the ladies.</p> It is hoped that this modest work, which we have entitled "They Also Served", will shed new light on the lives of the remarkable women who shared the history of this terrible time along with their warrior husbands. We have gathered these stories from various sources including books, magazines, the Internet, and several archival collections. A conscientious effort has been made to insure the information used in the telling of these stories has not only been accurate, but also fully documented.</p> After Fort Sumter, the men left in droves obeying the call of their governments to serve with the armies being formed, not to return for years or at all. The glamorous picture of the brave men riding off to war is a popular one, however, it remained for the wives to take up the many burdens their departures left behind. Overnight, wives became heads of family with sole responsibility for maintaining home and hearth. Most were completely unschooled in managing household finances or supervising plantation or farm laborers. Alone, they bore the deaths of their children and suffered the shock of news from the front that their husbands had been killed or captured. </p> Somehow, most of them survived and, in the process, added poignant, and truly amazing stories to Civil War folklore. They managed the home front as single parents for years. They followed their husbands to the front providing comfort and support, displaying great courage under dangerous and trying conditions. They provided badly needed nursing care. They developed skill at unraveling the politics of the military bureaucracy seeking ways they might support the careers of their loved ones. They suffered the anguish of spousal unfaithfulness. They served and died in support of a conflict that they little understood. Throughout the long four years they remained faithful to their respective causes without complaint and, often, with good cheer.</p> One of our early favorites was the fascinating Fanny Haralson Gordon, wife of Confederate General John Brown Gordon. This formidable woman decided to remain with her husband as much of the time as possible under what, at times, became truly hazardous conditions. With the professional help of the staff at the University of Georgia Libraries we were able to develop a profile of Fanny's life prior to, during, and after the Civil War. Her spectacular story drove us forward with renewed energy. We next found the flamboyant Libby Custer, the noble and stoic Mary Custis Lee, followed by the melancholy Fanny Chamberlain. We were hooked. And so, we have heeded the admonition of the remarkable Abigail and hope this book will help in "Remembering the Ladies"</p>.

The finite simple groups are the building blocks from which all the finite groups are made and as such are objects of fundamental importance throughout mathematics. They can be divided into the alternating, sporadic and Lie type groups, the latter further subdivided into classical and exceptional, or into untwisted and twisted types. This book is the first accessible introduction to all these families of finite simple groups at a level suitable for final year undergraduate and beginning graduate students.

The first five chapters provide a thorough grounding in the theory of the alternating and classical groups, followed by an overview of the exceptional groups (treated as automorphism groups of multilinear forms) and the sporadic groups. These chapters form the basis of a final year undergraduate course bringing their undergraduate studies to a fitting climax with seminal results from the late 20th century.

The final two chapters give an introduction to the theory of Lie algebras and Chevalley groups (which provides a unified approach to all the untwisted finite groups of Lie type) and to algebraic groups (which unites the twisted and untwisted types). These final chapters are ideal guides for undergraduate projects and prepare the students for further reading in more advanced texts on these important topics.

    The bestselling author of "President Kennedy: Profile of Power historian and biographer Richard Reeves lends his unmistakable voice to the groundbreaking "Character Above All audio series with an illuminating examination of one of America's most popular Presidents. Recorded live at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin, Reeves continues a series of lectures delivered by a team of historians, biographers and journalists assembled by Robert Wilson to explore the Presidential character on leadership and the creation of trust. Reeves tells how JFK valued courage above all and became the first self-selected President. Despite his own character flaws, Kennedy was able to bring out the best in the character of the people. "Character Above All is incomparable audio, crackling with the energy and excitement of a great mind at work and the intellectual urgency befitting a topic of lasting national importance.

    These two volumes contain eighteen invited papers by distinguished mathematicians in honor of the eightieth birthday of Israel M. Gelfand, one of the most remarkable mathematicians of our time. Gelfand has played a crucial role in the development of functional analysis during the last half-century. His work and his philosophy have in fact helped shape our understanding of the term 'functional analysis'. The papers in these volumes largely concern areas in which Gelfand has a very strong interest today, including geometric quantum field theory, representation theory, combinatorial structures underlying various 'continuous' constructions, quantum groups and geometry.
The second of the two volumes contains the somewhat more 'geometric' papers, although such a designation is to a certain extent arbitrary, because of the breadth of the papers.
Volume 1: 1996 * 320 pp., 18 illus. * Hardcover * $54.50 * ISBN 0-8176-3755-9 * Progress in Mathematics, Volume 131  Two Volume Set: $84.50 * ISBN 0-8176-3860-1
PM 132 / Vol. II CONTRIBUTORS: M. Gromov • M. Hanamura and R. MacPherson • L. Jeffrey and F.C. Kirwan • A. Klemm • G.H. Lian • S.S. Roan • S.T. Yau
