"The book provides a theoretical and analytical framework that both reflects reality and helps college students understand the reality of the world in which they grew up, live in, and are likely to continue to experience not only in the United States but throughout the world."

-Celestino Fernandez, University of Arizona

"I love this book; it is a contemporary classic. . . . I would certainly use this book in an undergraduate theory course."

-Philip Cohen, University of California, Irvine

"From my viewpoint, what I need is a book that spurs debate and stimulates critical thinking among my students, particularly on the societal consequences of rationalization. Ritzer’s book does exactly this. The strengths of the book are its connection to "real life" as well as the possibility of using it as a platform for discussing business practices seen from the viewpoint of citizens, rather than managers. . . . I would surely adopt its new edition and use it in a wide range of courses."

-Angelo Fanelli, University of Florida, Gainesville

"I use this book in an introductory level social problems and public policy course. The book is also used in my department in many sections of introduction to sociology. It works well in introductory level courses. . . . It is a good book and has been a great teaching tool. I find the book helps students to see rationalized environments where they could not see them before. Vision is a good thing. . . . the book still has a long shelf life ahead."

-Kurt F. Cylke, SUNY Geneseo

"This is an important book. Its wide recognition is well deserved. Its central strength is the clarity and brevity with which it makes accessible an extraordinarily important and complex process shaping the postmodern world."

-Peter Hoffman, Loyola Marymount University

"I am impressed with the amount of examples the author has gathered from around the world for the book. Examples are current, interesting, and illustrative. They mesh well with the text and help enormously in explicating complex processes underlying McDonaldization."

-Victor Shaw, California State University, Northridge

One of the most popular Sociology books of all time has been thoroughly updated to examine how McDonaldization has roared into the 21st century. The McDonaldization of Society, Revised New Century Edition discusses how McDonaldization and the broader process of globalization (in a new Chapter 8), are spreading more widely and more deeply into various social institutions such as education, medicine, the criminal justice system, and more. This Revised New Century Edition provides many new, relevant examples from recent events and contemporary popular culture, including the ever-increasing global proliferation of McDonald’s and other fast food franchises, shopping malls, and similar commercial entities. Their impact is examined in the post-September 11, 2001 era.

The McDonaldization of Society is ideal for use in a wide range of higher-education courses and will be of equal value to anyone interested in social criticism. The book offers readers new insight into the society they are constructing around them and will be sure to spark debate in and out of the classroom.

To read a sample chapter from The McDonaldization of Society click on "Additional Materials" in the left column under "About This Book" or simply click here.

Written by one of the foremost authorities in American sociological theory, this comprehensive text spans the history of sociological theory from its inception to the present. Sociological Theory is divided into four parts. Part 1 opens with a chapter that places the early sociological thinkers in context and then follows with separate chapters on four early sociological thinkers. Part 2 opens with a similar introductory chapter covering the later years and then looks at each major school. Part 3 addresses recent integrative developments (micro-macro and agency-structure). Part 4 covers contemporary theories of modernity, structuralism and post-structuralism, and the emergence of postmodern social theory. The book concludes with an Appendix which provides a metatheoretical schema that informs the text and highlights the latest work in sociological metatheorizing.

Written by one of the foremost authorities in American sociological theory, Modern Sociological Theory is a comprehensive overview of the schools of modern sociological thought. Reflecting changes in this fourth edition and paving the way for a separate text on Postmodern Social Theory, which Ritzer is now writing, the title has been changed from "Contemporary Sociological Theory" to "Modern Sociological Theory". Part 1 continues to offer two chapters devoted to the history of sociological theory. Part 2, with significant changes in terms of content and organization, devotes six chapters to the major schools of modern sociological theory. Each has been updated to reflect recent work, including theoretical syntheses. Two chapters in Part 3 address recent integrative developments, namely micro-macro and agency-structure. Part 4, which is new, provides two chapters addressing contemporary theories in modernity, structuralism, and poststructuralism, and the emergence of postmodern social theory. The book concludes with an appendix which provides a metatheoretical schema that informs the text, and highlights the latest work in sociological metatheorizing.

"I like the fact that the book is relatively even-handed - appreciating spectacle even while forcing students to question critically the effects of consumption in their lives and those of their fellow citizens."
<p align=right>-Gary Alan Fine, Northwestern University
"Enchanting a Disenchanted World is a tour de force. Drawing upon a rich array of examples, George Ritzer provides an original and insightful analysis of the new means of consumption and how they are transforming our lives. . . . Analytically crisp, jargon free, and packed with fresh illustrations, Enchanting a Disenchanted World is equally effective as an engaging read for specialists and a lucid text for classroom use. Highly recommended to scholars and students."
<p align=right>-Kevin Fox Gotham, Tulane University
"I think this is a great book! I have enjoyed working with it, and so have my students. . . . I especially like the chapters that deal with social theory. These chapters are very effective in presenting social theory to students, as they contain very clear and straightforward explanations of the ideas of otherwise very complex and difficult social theorists."
  <p align=right>-Ann Branaman, Florida Atlantic University <p align=left>
Megamalls. Restaurant chains. Elaborate casinos. Deluxe cruise ships. Enormous theme parks. Everywhere we turn, there is a new place being constructed in which to spend money. The Second Edition of Enchanting a Disenchanted World: Revolutionizing the Means of Consumption examines the development of these settings, and many others like them, in the last half century. </p>
Author George Ritzer takes a look at how a revolutionary change has occurred in the places in which we consume goods and services, and how it has a profound effect not only on the nature of consumption but also on social life. In the process of taking capitalism to a new level, we have created new "cathedrals of consumption"-locales to which we make pilgrimages in order to practice our consumer religion. The book offers rich detail on consuming in places such as Las Vegas, Disney World, cruise ships, Wal-Mart, and McDonald’s-all competing to outdo one another to see which one can put on the greatest show and lure the most consumers.

Enchanting a Disenchanted World is a unique analysis of the world of consumption, examining how we are different consumers now than we were in the past, both in the U.S. and around the world. In the process of understanding this social development, a wide range of theoretical perspectives including Marxian, Weberian, critical theory, and postmodern theory are applied. The book also looks at concepts such as hyperconsumption, implosion, time and space, and simulation.

New to the Second Edition:

<ul> <li>A new Chapter 7 has been added discussing "landscapes of consumption," or locales that encompass two or more cathedrals of consumption, giving a broader geographic context to examine the changes in consumption settings, their impact on the lure of consumption, and the pressure to consume. <li>A new section has been added to Chapter 3, devoted to the historical importance of the early Parisian arcades and to the thinking of the important social theorist, Walter Benjamin, on these sites. <li>The book has been thoroughly revised and updated and discusses the new big players among the cathedrals of consumption, including Disney’s upcoming theme park in Hong Kong, the new Queen Mary II, the soon-to-be completed casino resort Wynn Las Vegas, and many more.
Enchanting a Disenchanted World connects the everyday world in a sociological and theoretical way, making it an ideal text for a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses including introductory sociology, sociology of consumption , social change, popular culture, sociology of leisure, social theory, and economic sociology. The book will also be of value to anyone interested in exploring a sociological analysis of the world’s changing and expanding patterns and places of consumption.

"The Globalization of Nothing is one of the most original analyses of forces operating in the world today. Ritzer presents a new thesisindeed a grand narrative-- on the dynamics of globalizaton. The production and distribution of "nothing" or social formations that are centrally conceived, controlled and comparatively devoid of distinctive content represents a new way to address many of the issues raised by postmodern theory (without all of the jargon and anti-science rhetoric) and world systems theory (without the hoped for collapse of capitalism). It is critical but not shrill. It forces the reader to look at the contemporary work in a new way. The book is highly readable and engaging. It has something to say to the scholar, student, and layperson."

--Jonathan Turner, University of California, Riverside

"The Globalization of Nothing is a brilliant essay that develops revolutionary ideas based on sharp, penetrating observations. This book is truly the product of a "sociological eye." I do no exaggerate when I use the term "revolutionary." The author presents a phenomenon--or set of phenomena--that stretch sociology's phenomenological field. . . . After you become aware of nothing, you need to rethink the world and the way you look at it."

--Heran Vera, University of Florida, Gainesville

"The book makes a clear, interesting, and compelling argument and it certainly contributes to our understanding of modern culture and society."

--Celestino Fernández, University of Arizona

"The author does an excellent job in describing and explaining nothing, something, grobalization, glocalization, globalization, and their interrelations. Examples are drawn closely from life. They are touchable and powerfully illustrative. The discussion flows well and the text is highly readable."

--Victor N. This book continues the trajectory of McDonalization by providing a more sophisticated analytical frame to interpret globalization."

--Douglas H. Constance, Sam Houston State University

"The books strength is that it takes a look at the big picture and is not timid in developing a case for the nothing/something continuum and the increasing globalization of nothing. We have an insufficient number of books in sociology that take on big agendas."

--Steve Zehr, University of Southern Indiana

In a world increasingly festooned with familiar logos from the hallmark swoosh on a designer tennis shoe to an amusement parks infamous mouse ears it is clear that these symbols are not merely decorative, but represent important changes in our social milieu. The proliferation of credit card offers, automated banking services, and globally recognizable brand names illustrate significant changes in the realm of social consumption: a trajectory toward a world of increasingly dehumanized services and empty places and things.

George Ritzer theorizes in his provocative new book, The Globalization of Nothing, that the "grand narrative" or social story of this period is a movement from "something" to "nothing." Building on but going beyond his renowned McDonaldization thesis, Ritzer contends that societies around the globe continue to move away from "something," defined as a social form that is generally indigenously conceived, locally controlled, and rich in distinctive content. He argues that we are moving toward "nothing" that which is centrally controlled and conceived and relatively devoid of distinctive substance. It is in the movement toward the globalization of "nothing" that "something" is lost. More than likely, that "something" is an indigenous custom, a local store, a familiar gathering place, or simply personalized interaction. Thus, the central problem in the world today is defined as "loss amidst monumental abundance (of nothing)."

The Globalization of Nothing takes the subject of globalization in new directions, introducing terms such as "grobalization" (the growing influence of, for example, American corporations throughout the world). The key conflict in the world today is viewed as that between the grobalization of nothing and the glocalization of something. This book is structured around four sets of concepts addressing this issue: "places/non-places," "things/non-things," "people/non-people," and "services/non-services." By drawing upon salient examples from everyday life, George Ritzer invites the reader to examine the nuances of these concepts in conjunction with the paradoxes within the process of the globalization of nothing. Why is it that those who produce "nothing" for major multinational corporations often cannot afford that which they produce? Why do so many of us seem to be enraptured with our favorite brands or with our credit cards? What are the social implications of the increasing "globalization of nothing" for medicine, education, and tourism? Critical questions are raised throughout the book and the reader is compelled not only to seek answers to these questions, but to critically evaluate the questions as well as their answers.

The Globalization of Nothing is ideal as a primary or supplemental text for courses in sociology, anthropology, communication, business, and related disciplines. This book is also recommended for anyone interested in the critical study of contemporary social phenomena.

Few recent sociology books have succeeded in capturing the imagination more than George RitzerÆs The McDonaldization of Society, which has become an international bestseller and has been translated into eleven languages. The book stimulated thought and discussion throughout the sociological community. In this sequel, Ritzer moves on by examining how the thesis of McDonaldization should be adapted and extended. WeberÆs ideas provided the theoretical foundation for the thesis, but the ideas of Kurt Mannheim on rationalization are also useful and lead to some new perspectives on the process. The degree to which sociology and sociological theory have been McDonaldized are also assessed. In Part II, Ritzer discusses the process of McDonaldization. Areas scrutinized include the labor process and the degree to which it has been McDonaldized, the relationship between McDonaldization and processes such as globalization and Americanization, and the credit card. Part III presents the new means of consumption. These include fast-food restaurants, credit cards, shopping malls, and cybermalls. Ritzer introduces us to "McDisneyization," explaining the role of Disney in contemporary tourism. The modern universityùthe McUniversityùis also discussed as a new means of educational consumption. The book concludes with a reevaluation of the thesis and its future.

Excellence and Innovation for Teaching Introductory Sociology

"I am a sociology teacher first and foremost. So I set out to write a book that is as helpful to the craft of teaching sociology as possible. You will not find a gargantuan summary of every sociological concept, topic, and theory here. Instead, I chose to limit the focus, allowing for a deeper, more thorough, and hopefully more useful analysis of key ideas in the discipline. The book revolves around a sustained theme¾the reciprocal relationship between the individual and society¾ and continually shows the reader his or her active role as creator and shaper of society. I examine the crucial links between people’s common, everyday experiences and the broader structural features of their social worlds. Along the way I use a personal style of writing that I think will appeal to students and instructors alike."

David M. The Globalization of Nothing is back in a revised and completely updated edition, with an even greater emphasis on the processes of globalization and how they relate to McDonaldization. As before, this book is structured around four sets of concepts addressing the issues of: "places/non-places," "things/non-things," "people/non-people," and "services/non-services." By drawing upon salient examples from everyday life, George Ritzer invites the reader to examine the nuances of these concepts in conjunction with the paradoxes within the process of the globalization of nothing.
`Most undergraduate students today have never lived in an un-McDonaldized world, and because this book speaks to them, it sparks lively class discussions. This new edition is finely updated, and even more interesting, as it demonstrates the globalization of McDonaldization and the various ways different cultures individually adapt to it' - Nathan W Pino, Georgia Southern University

` The McDonaldization of Society is one of the most influential works of the last half of this century… Ritzer was both an analyst and prophet in this classic work, which is as relevant today as it was a decade ago' - Jonathan H Turner, University of California

One of the most noteworthy and popular sociology books of all time, The McDonaldization of Society demonstrates the power of the sociological imagination to today's readers in a way that few books have been able to do. It is ideal for use in a wide range of undergraduate courses and will be of equal interest to anyone interested in social criticism. This book links a large number of social phenomena to McDonaldization, some which are directly affected by the principles of the fast-food restaurant and others where the effect is more indirect. The new edition has been revised and updated and includes:

·An expanded chapter on The Practical Guide to Dealing with McDonaldization, covering the many other ways of coping with the process. There is a larger treatment of collective organizational efforts to deal with, as well as individual ways of escaping, McDonaldization.

·An addition to the Frontiers of McDonaldization chapter to deal not only with birth and death but also with death defying acts - like efforts to climb Mt.
<div> <div> <div> <p align=left>"Ritzer's Handbook of Social Problems offers a comprehensive treatment of today's major societal issues. The articles are authored by some of the top scholars in the field and address problem areas that will capture the interests of students and professors alike. The international coverage is most welcome in this time of intensifying global inequalities."

  <p align=right>-Nancy Jurik,
Arizona State University

The Handbook of Social Problems: A Comparative International Perspective provides a unique, broadly comparative perspective on the current state of social problems and deviance in a variety of societies around the world. Editor George Ritzer, along with leading U.S. and international sociologists, examines the relationship between social problems and a society’s level of development and affluence.

The essays in this volume focus on four interrelated issues involved in the relationship between social problems and the level of development and affluence:

· Less developed and less affluent societies are more likely to experience a range of social problems than developed and affluent societies.

· Affluence causes or at least brings with it a series of social problems that do not exist in less affluent societies.

· It is only with affluence that certain things can come to be imagined as social problems, such as excessive consumption.

· The very affluence of a society makes it vulnerable to problems that would not be social problems in poorer societies.

The Handbook explores the theory of the weakness of the strong—in other words, strong or wealthy nations may have greater vulnerability to some social problems than less developed or affluent societies. This theory is clearly illustrated in this volume by the aftermath of September 11, 2001depicting the vulnerability of the U.S. to social problems in far-removed corners of the world. In addition, the international and comparative essays in this volume cover other important issues such as the impact of modern technologies on social problems, ecological problems, global inequality, health as a social problem, and much more. The Handbook of Social Problems is a vital resource for sociologists and graduate students, as well as an excellent addition to any academic library.
</div></div></div>

George Ritzer is one of the leading social and cultural commentators of the present day. In this essential new book he considers some of the main tendencies in contemporary social theory. Included here are Ritzer's latest reflections on the uses and misuses of metatheory. According to Ritzer, sociology is a multiparadigm science. The differences and intensities of rivalries between paradigms are often very confusing for students and even for professional sociologists. This book seeks to find a way out of the confusion by sketching out the lineaments of a new integrated sociological paradigm and demonstrates how this paradigm can be applied. It shows the various ways in which Ritzer has developed rationalization theory to shed light on professional integration, the shape of consumer culture, hyperrationality and the state of sociology today.</p>

This reader in multicultural social theory provides selections from a wide range of multicultural theorists that include Feminist, Queer, Afrocentric, Native American, Chicana, and Asian American perspectives. Rogers begins with an Introduction , then breaks the 38 readings into seven thematic sections, beginning each section with an essay emphasizing the main points of the readings and helping to place those points into a broader theoretical context. Through the readings students come to see that intergroup "differences" are products of the societies and times in which they exist and that often those "differences" can often reveal not only cultural divergence but cultural similarities as well. The book goes beyond the usual class, race, gender approach found in social theory texts. It shows the similarities as well as the dissimilarities between multicultural and other social theorists, highlighting the idea that "theory", though diverse and eclectic, involves individuals of all intellectual and cultural bents commonly turning their consciousness to interpretation and understanding. The book uses the concept of "dignity" to integrate the cultural and theoretical concerns addressed in the readings.

Metatheorizing has come of age in sociology and other social science fields, forming the backdrop for serious intellectual debates over agency and structure, micro and macro level analysis, positivism and interpretivism, modernist and postmodernist thought. These debates are highlighted in this focused collection of essays.</p>

Contributors are among the leading figures in sociological theory - and represent a wide array of theoretical `camps'. Many of the debates in sociological theory are carried forward in the book. Collectively the contributors point out the importance of building overarching theoretical models and suggest new directions for metatheoretical work.

This is the first textbook for sociological theory that is modeled after the texts routinely available for introductory sociology courses. It is concise (although it covers a lot of ground), written in a highly accessible fashion, and includes much of the pedagogy that one expects to find in an introductory text. The book stems from the need of some instructors for a short text to be used in one-semester courses in contemporary sociological theory, or sociological theory more generally. At least some students (and their instructors) have found other texts too long, too dense and too complex. This volume is not only short, but comparatively light (but not lightweight) and less technical.

The Blackwell Companion to Major Contemporary Social Theorists is a survey of contemporary social theory that focuses on the thinkers themselves. In original essays especially commissioned for this volume, leading experts and practitioners examine the life and work of thirteen major theorists. Contributors discuss the social and intellectual context of the theorists' writings, and offer an analysis of their impact over time. Each chapter balances systematic treatment of a particular theorist with personal interpretations of the theorist's work. For the student, scholar, or practitioner this Companion is an indispensable resource and reference to the life and times of the thinkers who have tried to make sense of our social surroundings.
