Chess Story, also known as The Royal Game, is the Austrian master Stefan Zweig's final achievement, completed in Brazilian exile and sent off to his American publisher only days before his suicide in 1942. It is the only story in which Zweig looks at Nazism, and he does so with characteristic emphasis on the psychological.

Travelers by ship from New York to Buenos Aires find that on board with them is the world champion of chess, an arrogant and unfriendly man. They come together to try their skills against him and are soundly defeated. Then a mysterious passenger steps forward to advise them and their fortunes change. How he came to possess his extraordinary grasp of the game of chess and at what cost lie at the heart of Zweig's story.

This new translation of Chess Story brings out the work's unusual mixture of high suspense and poignant reflection.

"Stefan Zweig was a dark and unorthodox artist; it's good to have him back."--Salman Rushdie

The great Austrian writer Stefan Zweig was a master anatomist of the deceitful heart, and Beware of Pity, the only novel he published during his lifetime, uncovers the seed of selfishness within even the finest of feelings.

Hofmiller, an Austro-Hungarian cavalry officer stationed at the edge of the empire, is invited to a party at the home of a rich local landowner, a world away from the dreary routine of the barracks. The surroundings are glamorous, wine flows freely, and the exhilarated young Hofmiller asks his host's lovely daughter for a dance, only to discover that sickness has left her painfully crippled. It is a minor blunder that will destroy his life, as pity and guilt gradually implicate him in a well-meaning but tragically wrongheaded plot to restore the unhappy invalid to health.

<div>Life at the court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette has long captivated readers, drawn by accounts of the intrigues and pageantry that came to such a sudden and unexpected end. Stefan Zweig's Marie Antoinette: The Portrait of an Average Woman is a dramatic account of the guillotine's most famous victim, from the time when as a fourteen-year-old she took Versailles by storm, to her frustrations with her aloof husband, her passionate love affair with the Swedish Count von Fersen, and ultimately to the chaos of the French Revolution and the savagery of the Terror. An impassioned narrative, Zweig's biography focuses on the human emotions of the participants and victims of the French Revolution, making it both an engrossingly compelling read and a sweeping and informative history.
"Certainly no one can arise unmoved from the reading of this powerful work." -- The New Republic
"Excellent biography." -- The New York Times</div>

The post-office girl is Christine, who looks after her ailing mother and toils in a provincial Austrian post office in the years just after the Great War. One afternoon, as she is dozing among the official forms and stamps, a telegraph arrives addressed to her. It is from her rich aunt, who lives in America and writes requesting that Christine join her and her husband in a Swiss Alpine resort. After a dizzying train ride, Christine finds herself at the top of the world, enjoying a life of privilege that she had never imagined.

But Christine’s aunt drops her as abruptly as she picked her up, and soon the young woman is back at the provincial post office, consumed with disappointment and bitterness. Then she meets Ferdinand, a wounded but eloquent war veteran who is able to give voice to the disaffection of his generation. Christine’s and Ferdinand’s lives spiral downward, before Ferdinand comes up with a plan which will be either their salvation or their doom.

Stefan Zweig worked on The Post Office Girl, originally published as Rausch der Verwandlung in 1982, in intervals for more than twenty years. The manuscript of the book was found completed and awaiting only minor revisions after his suicide in 1941. Never before published in English, this extraordinary book is an unexpected and haunting foray into noir fiction by one of the masters of the psychological novel.

Two of Stefan Zweig's most compelling novellas are presented together in one volume. As heard on BBC Radio 4's Book at Bedtime, Twenty-four Hours in the Life of a Woman is the story of a middle-aged English widow who travels through Europe to escape loneliness and boredom. One evening, during her stay at the French Riviera, while enjoying the elegant atmosphere of the Monte Carlo Casino, she becomes mesmerised by the obsessive gambling of young Polish aristocrat. This fateful encounter leads to passion, despair and death, changing their lives forever. The Royal Game takes place on a cruise ship bound for Buenos Aires, where a tantalising encounter takes place between the reigning world chess champion and an unknown passenger. The stranger's diffident manner masks his extraordinary ability to challenge the Grand Master in a game of chess, but also conceals his dark and damaged past, the horror of which emerges as the game unfolds.

FIVE OF STEFAN ZWEIG'S most compelling novellas are presented together in this powerful volume. Fantastic Night is the story of one transforming evening in the life of a rich and bored young man. He spends a day at the races and an evening in the seedy but thrilling company of the dregs of society. His experiences jolt him out of his languor and give him a newfound relish for life, which is then cut short by the Great War. Fantastic Night is joined by The Invisible Collection and Buchmendel, two of Zweig's most powerful works, which explore lives led in the single minded pursuit of art and literature against a backdrop of poverty and corruption. And finally, Letter from an Unknown Woman, Zweig's poignant and heartbreaking tale of the strength and madness of unrequited love and The Fowler Snared, in which it is the man whose passion remains unrequited, complete the collection.

He had no idea the girl was lame when he asked her to dance - his compensatory afternoon calls relieve his guilt but give her a dangerous glimmer of hope. THIS NEW EDITION of Stefan Zweig's biographical essay, subtitled A Study in Self Portraiture, was originally dedicated to Maxim Gorky. Casanova, the Venetian who lived most of his life in exile from his beloved city, created his own myth which in turn is a reflection of the nature of the city itself. Imaginative writers, writes Zweig, rarely have a biography, and men who have biographies are only in exceptional circumstances able to write them ... Casanova is a splendid, almost unique exception.

Following the success of other Stefan Zweig stories, Pushkin publishes two more in their Classics series. In "Twilight," a fashionable lady is banished from Versailles by the king. She tries to survive living alone in the country, but although she entertains lovers and friends, she comes to find existence intolerable. In "Moonbeam Alley," a traveler delayed in a French port explores the sailors' quarter. Enticed by a voice singing a Weber aria to a bar near the harbor, he learns the story of those who run it and frequent it: a tale of unrequited passion, a sham marriage, and violence.

Stefan Zweig, novelist, biographer, poet, and translator, was born in 1881 in Vienna and died in Brazil in 1942.

--Stefan Kellerer

Text extracted from opening pages of book: BRAZIL LAND OF THE FUTURE Translated by Andrew St. James THE VIKING PRESS NEW YORK 1941 Introduction i History 14 Economy 80 Culture 134 Rio de Janeiro 166 Sao Paulo 211 A Visit to King Coffee 223 A Visit to the Lost Gold Towns 233 Flight over the North 253 Time-Table 280 IN THE old days the novelist, when placing a boo* on the market, frankly informed his prospective readers in a preface for which reasons, from what point of view, and with what intentions he had written it It was a good idea. It created by its informality and directness a basic understanding between the author and his public. And so I also want to state as honestly as possible what persuaded me to choose a theme which may seem far removed from the subjects about which I am accustomed to write. In 1936, when I was invited to go to the Argentine for the P. E. N. Club Congress in Buenos Aires, I received an in vitation at the same time to visit Brazil. I did not expect very much. My ideas of Brazil coincided with those of the average European and North American. It is only with an effort that I can reconstruct them today: it was very difficult to distinguish any one of these South American republics from the other; they all had a hot and unhealthy climate, political unrest, and desperate financial condi tions; they were badly governed, and semi-civilized, and only near the coastal cities. At the same time the scenery was beautiful and there were numerous unexplored possibili tiesin short, a land for desperate immigrants and settlers, 2 Brazil but never one from which to expect intellectual stimula tion. Being neither a professional geographer, collector of butterflies, sportsman, nor business man, I presumed that a visit of ten days would suffice. A week, ten days, then back again, I thought; and I am not ashamed to confess to this naive attitude of mine. I even consider it important, for this is the prevalent idea shared today by most Europeans and North Americans. From the cultural point of view Brazil is still as much the terra incognita as it was for the first seafaring men from the geographical point of view. I am always surprised anew to find that even educated and politically interested people have this confused and narrow minded attitude toward this country, which is destined undoubtedly to play one of the most important parts in the future development of our world. For instance, when on the boat a Boston business man talked rather disparag ingly of this small South American State and I tried to remind him that Brazil alone comprised a larger terri tory than the United States of America, he thought I was joking; and he could be convinced only when confronted with a map. Again, in the novel of a well-known English author I was amused to read of the hero being sent to Rio de Janeiro in order to learn Spanish. But this writer is but one of innumerable people who don't know that Portu guese is the language of Brazil. However, as I said before, if s not my business to be so presumptuous as to criticize others for their ignorance. I myself, when leaving Europe for the first time, knew nothing or nothing definite about Brazil. And then, finally arriving in Rio, I received one of the most powerful impressions of my whole life. I was fasci nated, and at the same time deeply moved. For what lay Introduction 3 before me here was not merely one of the most magnificent landscapes in the worlda unique combination of sea and mountain, city and tropical scenery but quite a new kind of civilization. Contrary to all my expectations, it was an entirely individual picture, with its orderly, clean-lined ar chitecture and city planning; there were courage and gener osity in all the modern things, and with all the traces of a well-preserved ancient culture. There were colour and move ment which fascinated and never tired the eye; and wher ever one looked there was a pleasant surprise. I was over whelmed by a rush of joy and beauty. My

Mr. Zweig's biography is no ordinary one. The outward events of _Romain Rolland's life are merely referred to in passing, and the narrative is kept on the high plane of his intellectual achievement. And to its fulfillment this biography of Stefan Zweig, so truly and so ardently interpretive, will be an important contribution. NEW REPUBLIC. "A massive and luminous biographical portrait. It combines the charm of rich objective delineation with a persuasive relation of Rolland, the artist." THE OUTLOOK. 'A brilliantly written book." N.Y. TIMES. After nine years of separation from his native country because of the First World War, Louis finally sets foot in Austria and meets the woman he had been in love with and who had promised to wait for him. Previously divided by class and wealth, both are now married and much changed by their recent experiences, and they must find out whether their love could survive the hardships, betrayals and the lapse of time. A poignant examination of the angst of nostalgia and the fragility of love, Zweig's long-lost final novella - recently rediscovered in manuscript form - simultaneously portrays the loss of innocence of a country about to succumb to the evils of fascism.

CONTENTS:THE ROMANCE OF THE MILKY WAY 1GOBLIN POETRY 51"ULTIMATE QUESTIONS" 103THE MIRROR MAIDEN 125THE STORY OF ITO NORISUK? 139STRANGER THAN FICTION 167A LETTER FROM JAPAN 179 *** A selection from the first story: THE ROMANCE, OF THE MILKY WAY
Of old it was said: 'The River of Heaven is the Ghost of Waters.' We behold it shifting its bed in the course of the year as an earthly river sometimes does.
Ancient Scholar

Among the many charming festivals celebrated by Old Japan, the most romantic was the festival of Tanabata-Sama, the Weaving-Lady of the Milky Way. In the chief cities her holiday is now little observed; and in Tokyo it is almost forgotten. But in many country districts, and even in villages, near the capital, it is still celebrated in a small way. If you happen to visit an old-fashioned country town or village, on the seventh day of the seventh month (by the ancient calendar), you will probably notice many freshly-cut bamboos fixed upon the roofs of the houses, or planted in the ground beside them, every bamboo having attached to it a number of strips of colored paper. In some very poor villages you might find that these papers are white, or of one color only; but the general rule is that the papers should be of five or seven different colors. Blue, green, red, yellow, and white are the tints commonly displayed. All these papers are inscribed with short poems written in praise of Tanabata and her husband Hikoboshi. After the festival the bamboos are taken down and thrown into the nearest stream, together with the poems attached to them.

To understand the romance of this old festival, you must know the legend of those astral divinities to whom offerings used to be made, even by, the Imperial Household, on the seventh day of the seventh month. The legend is Chinese. This is the Japanese popular version of it:?

The great god of the firmament had a lovely daughter, Tanabata-tsum?, who passed her days in weaving garments for her august parent. She rejoiced in her work, and thought that there was no greater pleasure than the pleasure of weaving. But one day, as she sat before her loom at the door of her heavenly dwelling, she saw a handsome peasant lad pass by, leading an ox, and she fell in love with him. Her august father, divining her secret wish, gave her the youth for a husband. But the wedded lovers became too fond of each other, and neglected their duty to the god of the firmament; the sound of the shuttle was no longer heard, and the ox wandered, unheeded, over the plains of heaven. Therefore the great god was displeased, and he separated the pair. They were sentenced to live thereafter apart, with the Celestial River between them; but it was permitted them to see each other once a year, on the seventh night of the seventh moon. On that night?providing the skies be clear?the birds of heaven make, with their bodies and wings, a bridge over the stream; and by means of that bridge the lovers can meet. But if there be rain, the River of Heaven rises, and becomes so wide that the bridge cannot be formed. So the husband and wife cannot always meet, even on the seventh night of the seventh month; it may happen, by reason of bad weather, that they cannot meet for three or four years at a time. But their love remains immortally young and eternally patient; and they continue to fulfill their respective duties each day without fault,?happy in their hope of being able to meet on the seventh night of the next seventh month.

BOOK SYNOPSIS IN ENGLISH In this volume the hitherto published correspondence between two writers who began their careers in the turn-of-the-century Vienna is brought together for the first time. It documents the growing friendship between two men who came from the opposite ends of the social spectrum. The one with bitter first-hand experience of the hardships of proletarian life, the other enjoying all the benefits of an upbringing among the wealthy Jewish bourgeoisie, but who were united in their ambition to give artistic expression to their concerns. An introductory essay and extensive notes provide the necessary context for an understanding of the correspondence.
