This book features 366 essays penned from a woman's perspective. Sample topics include gratitude, harmony, self-nurturing, positive body image, the importance of scented linen closets, and many others. Each essay sports a pithy quote from (surprise!) the likes of Kahlil Gibran. Viewed uncritically, it's hard to argue with Simple Abundance's earnest admonitions to appreciate life, in all its messy imperfect excellence. And the fact that serenity and happiness are each in dreadfully short supply can excuse some of the treacly writing. But Breathnach sometimes lapses into what can only be described as her "Martha Stewart on Prozac" voice, and the results are aggravating to the extreme: "If you've been hesitant to strike up a reciprocal relationship with your guardian angel, don't be." Fans of guardian angels will greet these feel-good essays every morning with the rising sun, a cup of mint tea, and a bluebird chirping on the windowsill, and be happy. Skeptics will prefer their coffee very black.

From the author of Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy comes a guided excavation for women who suspect that there's something more to life than the top layer pursuits of money, sex, and love. In service to these restless souls who want to scratch beneath the surface, Ban Breathnach offers tidbit-sized essays that help women unearth pay dirt--their reason for being. Using archaeology as her frame of reference, Ban Breathnach suggests imaginative exercises at the end of each chapter, which she refers to as "Field Work." Although it occasionally feels overdone, the archaeology metaphor works well--helping readers unearth their past choices and circumstances to better understand the soul's current mission. Early in the book, Ban Breathnach offers this enticing invitation to go on a spiritual dig: "Besides the fact that your soul is one of the last unlooted sources of the miraculous, with discoveries as spectacular as any found in the Delta of Venus or Egypt's Valley of the Kings, you can embark on a soul trip and be back before anyone even notices you're missing. They might be curious about that gleam in your eye and that flush on your cheek, but I'll never tell if you won't. Are you game? We're heading to the sacred site of your soul." --Gail Hudson

In her first major book since Something More, #1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah Ban Breathnach takes readers to a new level of personal fulfillment and spiritual awareness as they learn to rediscover and savor the sensual experience of daily life.

Organized as a saunter through the year, Romancing the Ordinary celebrates the spirituality of the senses, seasonally and monthly. Ban Breathnach believes that women are endowed not with five senses but with seven. In addition to rediscovering sight, sound, scent, taste, and touch, readers will come to cherish their sense of "knowing" -- a woman's intuitive sense -- and "wonder," her sense of rapture and reverence.
Writing in the style so beloved by her millions of readers, and drawing on myth, literature, film, music, and drama, Ban Breathnach encourages each woman to discover what moves her to tears, makes her blood rush to her head, her heart skip a beat, and her soul sigh. Interwoven with the text are seasonal indulgences intended to restore weary feminine souls -- recipes, rituals, decorating, fashion, and gardening hints. By encouraging her to delight in the often overlooked gifts of every day -- from the aroma of simmering homemade spaghetti sauce to the sensation of freshly laundered linen against bare skin -- Romancing the Ordinary is sure to help every woman fall in love with Life.

"Gratitude is the most passionate transformative force in the cosmos," promises author Sarah Ban Breathnach (Simple Abundance) in her introduction. So that everyone can experience the transformational rewards of being grateful, Ban Breathnach designed a day-by-day journal for counting one's blessing. Years of disciplined gratitude have taught Ban Breathnach that "if you give thanks for five gifts every day, in two months you may not look at your life in the same way as you might now." Ideally, the journal writer will feel less discontent and "complicated need" and instead feel more awareness of simple abundance. The journal itself is highly inviting--bordered with simple country colors of cream, corn yellow, and dried sage. But even more inviting are the inspirational quotes sprinkled throughout, such as Henry Van Dyke's message: "Gratitude is twofold--love coming to visit us and love running out to greet a welcome guest." --Gail Hudson

Before Simple Abundance was a bestselling book, it was a highly successful workshop taught by author Sarah Ban Breathnach. Returning to the workshop format, Ban Breathnach has written this workbook-style companion guide. Devised as a month-by-month course, this 12-chapter book offers reflective lessons on topics such as "Choice As a Spiritual Gift," "The Love of Play," and "Sacred Connections." At the end of each chapter Ban Breathnach lists "Soul Assignments," which include penetrating questions alongside lighthearted assignments: going on "creativity excursions" or learning to "color outside the lines" of life.
Ban Breathnach possesses a contagious playfulness that permeates the book's workshop structure. Critics call her frivolous, but fans call her inspirational. Even her resources promise a good time, including her amusing appendix on "Cinematherapy," which lists suitable movies for every chapter. (For example, chapter 3, "Romancing the Soul," could be enhanced by watching Love in the Afternoon or A Man and a Woman.)
"Consider this workbook a personal tutorial," she writes. "Just you and me.... But please let's think girls' night out instead of study group as we sift and sort. Gratefully, I've finally learned to choose fun over earnestness any day of the week, and I'm not going back. How about you?" Not a chance, Sarah. Not a chance. --Gail Hudson

This spiral-bound journal, conceived by Sarah Ban Breathnach, is designed to encourage writers to explore their life stories and unleash dormant creativity. Every two-page spread is exquisitely bordered by a wood print leaf pattern and includes a sage little quote to set the mood or beckon the muse (such as "People who keep journals have life twice." --Jessamyn West). The large format (11.25 by 9.75 inches) gives writers plenty of room to scrawl down their thoughts and even offers ample space for adding personal artwork or gluing in cut-out images. Several pocket folders are bound into the back for carrying clippings, postcards, or dry leaves--whatever whimsy dictates. Because it is spiral bound (with a sturdy wrap-around cover), writers can lay the book flat while at work--a major convenience.
Interspersed throughout the journal, Ban Breathnach has added suggestions for writing exercises and collages, plus discussions of themes such as "Success," "Mystery," or "Return to Self." In one spread, Natalie Goldberg is quoted as saying, "Your first job is to get your own story straight." There's no doubt that writers can do just that with this literary example of functional art. --Gail Hudson

Sarah Ban Breathnach wanted to offer men the same reflective book that she offered women in Simple Abundance. Yet, she also knew that she needed a man to help her represent an authentic male experience, a book that mined beneath the "Men Are from Mars" stereotypes and "Iron John" expectations. So she joined forces with Michael Segell, former "Men's Mind" columnist for Esquire and author of Standup Guy. From there, the duo gathered these contemplative, humorous, and mature essays written by a diverse sampling of men, including a backwoods hermit, mystical rabbi, and world renowned rock star.
Segell writes the poignant introductions to the essays while Ban Breathnach inserts her personal responses at the end of particularly provocative essays. At times she sounds like an interloper in a "boy's only" tree fort club, her comments sounding out of place within these private moments of male bonding. Yet she forces readers, men and women alike, to acknowledge the feminine within the male experience, a lofty goal that we tend to resist. Contributors include Sting, who talks about the difference between thrill seeking and risk taking in "Let Your Soul Be Your Rookie." Adventure writer Tim Cahill writes about "The Bravest Thing I Ever Did"--face his panic disorder as his vomited his way through an un-aired television interview. And Thomas Moore speaks to the ecstasy of melding spirituality and sexuality. --Gail Hudson

<div>Drawing on myth, literature, film, music, and drama, women will learn to celebrate the spirituality of the senses and restore the weary feminine soul. Ban Breathnach believes that women are endowed not with five senses but with seven. In addition to rediscovering sight, sound, scent, taste, and touch, readers will come to cherish their sense of "knowing," a woman's intuitive sense, and "wonder," her sense of rapture and reverence.
