Creative people have a need to understand, to empathize, and to experience in order to create. This sensitivity and emotional exploration makes them more prone to a unique kind of depression, explains Dr. Maisel. Often its source is not physiological and therefore does not respond well to pharmaceutical treatments. The good news for artists is that Dr. Maisel has developed a four-step non-pharmaceutical treatment plan that involves strategies to harness the depression and put it to work for creative good. He offers examples of famous (Vincent van Gogh, William Styron) and not-so- famous artists who have struggled with depression and shows what lessons can be learned from them. Dr. Maisels approach legitimizes for many creative people suffering with depression their own instinctual belief that standard treatments are not the answer.

Coaching the Artist Within contains a dozen simple lessons. Eric Maisel, a leading creativity coach, writes each one with a novelist's flair, as a narrative complete with examples, exercises, and questions to help readers explore and reflect on underlying issues that may be keeping them from pursuing their urge to create. Topics include committing, planning and doing, generating mental energy, achieving a centered presence, becoming an anxiety expert, upholding your dream, and maintaining a creative life. Maisel has worked extensively with creative people - poets, filmmakers, novelists, dancers - and he revisits some of them in coaching sessions in San Francisco, Paris, London, and New York. Typical are the rock musician who wants to pursue a solo career and the screenwriter anxious to become a poet. Their examples both entertain and instruct, outlining how to discover one's personal muse - and the motivation to keep creating.

Every writer needs a simpatico environment to be productive, and what better place than that mecca of creativity, San Francisco? The city by the bay has been home to generations of writers, from Rudyard Kipling to Mark Twain to Armistead Maupin. In this lively book, Eric Maisel gives writers the guidance they need to take a literal or figurative soul-renewing sojourn to San Francisco. Maisel, one of America’s foremost creativity coaches, explores the how and why of making an artistic pilgrimage to the city, including the pesky problem of finding the perfect pied-a-terre for writing that elusive masterpiece. Thirty individual essays profile the best sections of the city for pumping up the juices (“The View from Bernal Hill,” “South of Market”), noted literati of the past (“Mark Twain and the Onion”), how to find the perfect landlord, dealing with those inspiration-inhibiting earthquake fears, and much more.

According to Eric Maisel, 'atheism' isn't so much a denial of god as it is a way to embrace the vagaries of being human and then to create a life of integrity and meaning without supernatural intervention. "The Atheist's Way" represents an exciting new direction in spirituality, one away from inward looking to a more active participation in the world but without a directive from some higher force. It isn't humanism, it isn't existentialism, it isn't spirituality, it isn't psychology, but it includes aspects of all of those approaches to what human life is about. Unlike recent successful books about atheism, this one doesn't rail against religion and believers or take up recent politics. Instead, it announces that an indifferent universe need not deter us from making personal meaning that is at once rich, sustainable, and real. Today, more than ever, people are burdened by the feeling that they and their efforts do not matter. The thought that they are disposable throwaways in a meaningless universe plays havoc beneath the surface, draining them of motivational energy and fitting them for depression. According to Maisel, meaning is not a property of the universe but a poignantly human problem to be solved. The book focuses on presenting floundering unbelievers and wavering believers with a picture of the universe they can embrace and a complete life programme they can work. Maisel advocates atheism in part because of the heightened threat that religious belief poses to the survival of the species. It was one thing for human beings of another age to use god-talk to justify inquisitions. Now religious fundamentalists, claiming the power of God, also have or will soon have nuclear weapons and we must divest them of their cover. It is time to make decisions based on human rights and human good rather than on the dictates of an unseen God.

Just how well do you know your characters?
Test yourself—and your characters—with 30 interactive pop quizzes designed to help you discover exactly what makes your characters tick.
Noted author Eric Maisel draws on his technical knowledge of the craft and his background in psychology to show you how to combine character traits, character psychology, and character development to create realistic, memorable, and mutable characters.
The 30 real-life scenarios include questions and answers that provide you with a window into your characters' souls. For example:
·	What would motivate your character to tell a lie—a big lie that may have unintended consequences? ·	Is your character the type who would blow the whistle on a corporate cover-up or would she quietly toe the line? ·	How would your character cope with the loss of a parent with whom he was exceptionally close? ·	How likely would your character be to flirt with an attractive stranger in a hotel bar? ·	Is your character the type who would drop everything—and everyone—for a spontaneous road trip?
Plus, find out how to develop each scenario further using corresponding prompts and specific psychological insight into areas such as the role friendship plays in a person's mental and physical health, conflict resolution in intimate relationships, and the connection between time-impatience and free-floating hostility.
With What Would Your Character Do?, you don't have to guess at your character's responses to the important decisions and unexpected challenges he's sure to encounter in your story. Use and reuse these scenarios on each of your characters until you've got a nuanced, distinct cast that readers will never be able to forget!

Over the years, Eric Maisel has worked with thousands of creative people, including writers, musicians, artists, dancers, and actors. He knows firsthand the struggles they must face, and through his many books and professional practice he’s helped them find balance in their lives while pursuing their artistic endeavors. Firmly grounded in psychology, Creativity for Life explores all the challenges confronting an artist: deciding if you have talent (or if that’s even important); determining your level of commitment; pursuing stardom; honing your craft; overcoming blocks; taking care of the business end of your artistic life; finding your place in culture; coming out as an artist; finding love and friendship inside and out of your artistic community; and using your art to explore your inner life. A comprehensive approach to the much-misunderstood artist's life, this book, contains both nuts-and-bolts ideas and exercises and inspiration to nurture growth as an artist and a person. It includes update and expanded material from Maisel's Life in the Arts.

The basis of The Ten Second Pause is using a single deep breath as a container for a specific thought.

This technique is simple to grasp, simple to use, simple to practice and simple to master. This technique can be used anywhere, anytime, by anyone and it's profound in its benefits. You'll find yourself able to do things that previously felt too painful or too difficult to attempt. You'll be able to calm and center yourself before an important meeting or conversation. You'll be able to change your basic attitudes about life, becoming calm and positive where before you may have been anxious or pessimistic.

Blending Eastern principles of breath awareness and mindfulness with Western principles of positive psychology, together they offer a powerful antidote to stress, procrastination and anxiousness.

Offering an instant antidote to creative negativity, this beautifully designed book shows writers how to turn their 299 most common "wrong mind" thoughts about what, why, how, and how much they are writing into a corresponding "write mind" thought that will help them feel more fulfilled by their art. For example:

Wrong Mind: "I need what I am writing to be loved."
Right Mind: "I need what I am writing to be strong."

Addressing such concerns as coping with writer's block, dealing with rejection, and maintaining momentum and interest in one's work, Write Mind is fresh, original, and direct.

Here is an expert's guide through the elements of a nonfiction book proposal, including the outline, chapter summaries, marketing/publicity, book and chapter titles, and more. Filled with exercises designed to help a writer conceive and create a desirable proposal, and checklists to keep track of the project's progress, The Art of the Book Proposal provides the framework on which to build a great idea, as well as intelligent, empathetic instruction on how to produce a proposal that will capture the interest of an agent or editor.

While most how-to writing books focus only on the nuts and bolts of putting a proposal together, Maisel, considered by many to be America's foremost expert on the psychological side of the creative process, also helps the writer overcome mental barriers to producing the best work possible. Using a holistic approach to the sometimes unglamorous work of designing a proposal, his guide enables a writer to transform an idea into a book.

We've all felt the sting of criticism . . .

Sometimes painful barbs from friends, family, coworkers, or strangers can lodge in our minds and eat away at our core. When you allow criticism--even self-criticism--to affect you that powerfully, it can be toxic. And if you don't break the cycle, toxic criticism can make you sick, strain relationships, and prevent you from fulfilling your dreams.

But you don't have to live that way! By using the proven strategies in Toxic Criticism, you can deflect any hurtful comment that comes your way, rationally decide whether the criticism has any validity, and, if you choose, give a calculated response or use it as an opportunity to make a positive change. Once you've mastered the techniques in Toxic Criticism, you'll be able to:

Dismiss negative comments before they make you upset
Take away the power of criticism by believing in yourself
Live a positive life, driven by feeling of self-worth instead of self-loathing
Silence your inner critic, and listen to the voice of confidence

Repeated rejection. Writer's block. Isolation. Alcoholism. Day jobs. Criticism. Low self-esteem. Narcissism. Addictions. Writing poorly. Poverty. Arrogance. Depression. A writer's life tends to invite all of the above, and more. In Living the Writer's Life, therapist and writer Eric Maisel, who specializes in counseling writers, sets out to "help you handle the many obstacles and challenges that come with the writing life." Books about writing commonly broach these types of issues as inevitabilities that writers must learn to deal with. Maisel's book shows you how. Through the use of role playing, personal anecdotes (one contributor writes about the value of earning an M.F.A. later in life), multiple-choice questions, quizzes, topical comments from renowned writers, and other models, Maisel encourages his readers to avoid the pitfalls of the writer's life. This is a serious workbook that can be used by writers (and other creative types, with little adjustments here and there) individually, in pairs, or in groups. --Jane Steinberg

Imagine solving problems and increasing creativity while you sleep. In Sleep Thinking, Dr. Eric Maisel introduces a simple but revolutionary program grounded in current brain research that shows us how to do just that -- think while we sleep. Readers will meet several ordinary people and see them work the sleep thinking program to solve their important problems as they sleep, including: -- Nancy who works through her failing interest in college -- Jack, an electrical engineer who is having anger management problems. -- Thirty-six-year-old Joanne who uses sleep thinking to help her understand how to help her eighth grader stop his slide into school failure. The sleep thinker uses his or her own brain power to extract important information from the fruits of sleep thinking. The answers that arrive lead to actions, which lead to change. Few people can afford not to explore the power of sleep thinking. In this book, Eric Maisel teaches readers how to use the full power of the brain and learn to make use of this idea management and life purpose clarification tool called sleep thinking.

Award-winning creativity coach and therapist, Eric Maisel, offers the A Little Every Day Deck series to help readers develop a more centered, creative, intelligent life. Each card in the series presents a single idea and a simple exercise to try every day. Readers can use the decks in a variety of ways. They can:
• Read through the 30 cards in the deck, pick one that resonates, and try the simple exercise the card suggests.
• Use the cards as a 30-day program, practicing one message and exercise a day.
• Shuffle the cards, cut the deck, and let a random message speak.
• Find a favorite message and exercise, repeat it until the message is taken to heart, then go on to another card in the deck.
Each deck is designed to work with the others to help readers grow in profound, even unexpected ways.
Everyday Creative provides 30 ways to awaken the artist within. Each card helps build a more creative life: undertake new creative projects, live life more authentically, and manifest a true artistic nature. Cards invite readers to acquire new confidence, allow for fortunate accidents, embrace mystery, reduce anxiety, and more.
Mystery is the artist's territory. We know. And we don't know. Grow creative by embracing mystery. Intending is more powerful than wishing. Intend to create. Hold the intention in your heart and in your belly. Grow creative through powerful intention. No desire, no creativity. Burn to create. Fall deeply in love with life. Grow creative through passionate desire.

Despite all the high-tech advances of the last several years, one aspect of the work environment remains sadly inefficient: coworkers' ability to communicate well. Emails abound, teleconferences connect distant offices, and deals are closed in a matter of minutes. Yet most of the things people accomplish — or don't — depends on their ability to communicate with others. These 20 tips, designed to serve both employee and employer, include advice on how to offer critical feedback, understand the messages one receives, sort out motivations, offer praise, and keep people informed. Each suggestion is followed by an explanation along with examples. Brief exercises help readers assess their own communication skills.

A BLUEPRINT FOR A MEANINGFUL LIFE. In The Atheist's Way, Eric Maisel teaches you how to make rich personal meaning despite the absence of beneficent gods and the indifference of the universe to human concerns. Exploding the myth that there is any meaning to find or to seek, Dr. Maisel explains why the paradigm shift from seeking meaning to making meaning is this century's most pressing intellectual goal. ''Unlike many other books on atheism, which deal with the question of God's existence, The Atheist's Way attempts to answer a different question: So you don't believe - now what? How do you bravely face the world as it is and create meaning for yourself without the crutch of a divine benefactor? Eric Maisel's wise suggestions, musings, and insights are a wonderful resource for your quest.'' - JOHN ALLEN PAULOS, author of Irreligion: A Mathematician Explains Why the Arguments for God Just Don't Add Up

Eric Maisel has written more than thirty books to help people live more creative lives despite the difficulties our society throws in our path. In Everyday You, Maisel takes a fresh and innovative approach to inspire all who would live a mindful, joyful life, grounded and connected to their work, their families, their own spirit.
Everyday You is an inspirational gift book with a twist--it is aimed at putting an idea into action for a richer life. For example, in "Grow connected by valuing connection," we are invited to write a list of reasons to strengthen connections with people in our lives. The very act of writing this list can help strengthen our connections. "Take the time to make a list that impresses you and convinces you of the value of connection in your life," Maisel encourages.
Ninety entries in all make this a book to savor through a season and beyond. Deep and rich enough to dip into over and over again, this beautiful and inspiring bedside or coffee-table book is an ideal gift for any occasion.
*	Inspiring thoughts, activities, and meditations, accompanied by original 4-color photos
