The mark of a craftsman is his familiarity with his tools, the speed with which he can use them to solve simple problems, and his cleverness in using them to solve more complicated challenges. The latest edition of Unix Power Tools explores the standard Unix tools in greater depth than ever, and with better coverage of Linux, FreeBSD, and even the Darwin environment of Mac OS X. It's also been improved by the addition of sections on Perl and Python, programming languages that can often solve Unix problems more adeptly than any specific utility. This detail-filled book distinguishes itself from other guides for Unix gurus with its organizational structure (it's a series of articles that can be absorbed sequentially or individually) and carefully designed and executed index. Like its esteemed predecessors, this book is one you will keep handy.
The authors have achieved a nearly ideal balance in the pages of this book. It's not just a collection of recipes (such collections tend to leave you hanging if you want to do something a little differently), it's not just a book of documentation (books like that have application mainly as references for people who know a lot already), and it's not just a conceptual how-to guide. Unix Power Tools is all of those things, and the overall effect is impressive indeed. If you work with any flavor of Unix, whatever your level of experience, you will benefit by having this book. --David Wall
Topics covered: How to work efficiently, elegantly, and creatively with the Unix tool suite, as well as (to a lesser extent) with Perl and Python scripts. Tips and strategies on customization, document generation, process management, and networking abound in this wisdom-rich volume.

The Traveler's Tales publishers have produced another hard-to-put-down read with The Road Within, the latest in their series of "experiential" guides, which is "based on a simple and ancient premise: that the experience of other travelers provides our best map to a strange land." With this book the land is uncharted indeed, as it seeks to delve into the mysteries of the human heart and soul. Authors such as Annie Dillard, Huston Smith, Natalie Goldberg, and Barry Lopez use their travels in the exterior world to do some interior navigation. Based on the fact that "some journeys are destined to alter our lives irrevocably," this is a guidebook that can accompany you to any destination--where memories, not maps, make the terrain most palatable and exciting.

Windows 98 in a Nutshell, the latest addition to the family of O'Reilly's Nutshell books (an extremely useful set of references for developers, system administrators, and users), covers the current version of the Microsoft Windows operating system, Windows 98. Up to date enough to cover the latest SE edition, it's a compilation of tips, information, and guides to using and working with Windows.
This is a book of three parts, the first giving you a brief overview of the Windows way of working. Section two is a deeper, alphabetical reference to the various functions and features of Windows 98, complete with plenty of screen shots and instructions for getting the best out of your PC.
If you're running a network or want to get a better understanding of Windows 98 systems, you'll find the third section of the book most useful. It covers in depth the tools you need to run Windows, from the Registry to building and running batch files. However, where it really excels is in its coverage of one of Microsoft's hidden secrets--the Windows Scripting Host. Using this and the reference to the available functions in the book, you can create simple scripts to control and add extra functions to your Windows systems.
Because Windows 98 is so poorly documented, this book is the ideal desktop aid for both the beginner and the power user. Windows 98 in a Nutshell is the manual Microsoft left out of the Windows 98 box. --Simon Bisson, amazon.co.uk

Poor documentation, cryptic messages, and differences between various implementations make setting up UUCP links a nightmare for many a system administrator.
This handbook is meant for system administrators who want to install and manage the UUCP and Usenet software. It covers HoneyDanBer UUCP as well as standard Version 2 UUCP, with special notes on Xenix. As one reader noted over the Net, "Don't even TRY to install UUCP without it!"
Topics covered in Managing UUCP include:

How UUCP works.
RS-232 cabling.
Talking with modems.
Setting up a UUCP link.
Security considerations.
UUCP administration.
Introduction to Usenet.
Installing Netnews.
Administering Netnews.
The tenth edition of this classic work has been revised and expanded to include descriptions of:

How to use NNTP (Network News Transfer Protocol) to transfer Usenet news over TCP/IP and other high-speed networks.
How to get DOS versions of UUCP.
How to set up DOS-based laptop computers as traveling UUCP nodes.
How the UUCP 'g' protocol works.

While termcap and terminfo are no longer as important as they once were, due to the growth of the X terminal market and increased standardization among ASCII terminals, handling different terminal types can still be a headache for system administrators. The termcap and terminfo databases are UNIX's solution to the difficulty of supporting many terminals without writing special drivers for each terminal. Termcap (BSD) and terminfo (System V) describe the features of hundreds of terminals, together with a library of routines that allow programs to use those capabilities. This book documents hundreds of capabilities and syntax for termcap and terminfo, writing and debugging terminal descriptions, and terminal initialization. Contents include:

Terminal independence: the need for termcap and terminfo.

Reading termcap and terminfo entries.

Capability syntax.

Initializing the terminal environment.

Writing termcap and terminfo entries.

Converting between termcap and terminfo.

Detailed descriptions of the capabilities.

Screen dimensions and cursor movement.

Initialization and reset.

Special and equivalent terminals.

Many useful appendices.

Volume 4 is a complete guide to programming with the X Toolkit Intrinsics, the library of C language routines that facilitates the design of user interfaces with reusable components called widgets. It provides concepts and examples that show how to use the various X Toolkit routines. The first few chapters are devoted to using widgets; the remainder of the book covers the more complex task of writing new widgets. Uses the Motif 1.2 widget set in examples and covers X11 Release 5. Volume 4 includes:

Introduction to the X Window System.

Building applications with widgets.

Constructing a bitmap editor with widgets.

An overview of each widget in the widget set.

Basic widget methods./li>
Events, translations, and accelerators.

Event handlers, timeouts, and work procedures.

Resource management and type conversion.

Selections and window manager interaction.

Geometry management.

Menus, gadgets, and cascaded pop-ups.

Miscellaneous techniques.

Comparison of Athena, OSF/Motif, and AT&T OPEN LOOK widgets.

This book is designed to be used with Volume 5, X Toolkit Intrinsics Reference Manual, which provides reference pages for each of the Xt functions, the widget classes defined by Xt, and the Athena widget set.

UUCP, a UNIX program with a long history, remains interesting even today because it is a simple way to share resources and transfer files from one computer to another. It runs over dial-up lines with a minimum of overhead. UUCP became popular because of its use by the Usenet, but it remains popular today because it works well on small systems with limited resources. The proliferation of PC-sized machines in small offices and homes, especially those that run the Linux operating system, has caused a resurgence of interest in UUCP.
This book combines material about UUCP formerly contained in two other O'Reilly & Associates books, Using UUCP and Usenet and Managing UUCP and Usenet. UUCP and Usenet are sufficiently separated now to make it inefficient to discuss them both in the same book. On the other hand, it now makes sense to combine information about using and managing UUCP in one volume, because on PC-sized systems, the user and the manager of UUCP are likely to be the same person. With this book, everything you need to know about UUCP is in one volume.
Using & Managing UUCP contains up-to-date information about HoneyDanBer UUCP (officially called Basic Networking Utilities or BNU). It also contains product-specific information about the UUCP implementations of the major UNIX vendors. More important, Using & Managing UUCP covers Taylor UUCP, a new implementation that ships with Linux distributions. So this book is of special importance to the growing number of individuals running Linux on their home or office computers.

Volume 4 is available in two editions. The Standard Edition uses Athena widgets in examples for X11 Release 5 to demonstrate how to use existing widgets, while still providing a good introduction to programming with any widget set based on Xt.
Volume 4 includes:

Introduction to the X Window System.
Building applications with widgets.
Constructing a bitmap editor with widgets.
An overview of each widget in the widget set.
Basic widget methods.

The X Window System User's Guide orients the new user to window system concepts and provides detailed tutorials for many client programs, including the xterm terminal emulator and window managers.
