Published in 1984, Not Wanted on the Voyage is one of Timothy Findley's most imaginative and compelling literary fictions. Findley turns to one of our essential myths: the biblical story of the great Flood, but he doesn't so much retell it as take our common knowledge of the Old Testament tale and give it an extraordinary twist. Here we have Dr. Noah Noyes, diabolical conjuror and dictatorial leader of his helpless little boat-bound band, sure of his total superiority as man, husband, and father, imposing his view of the ways of God on his wife and family. The kind and generous Mrs. Noyes stands in direct contrast to her hard-hearted husband, and then there are the Noyes children: strongman Japeth, every inch his father's son, with his delicate wife, Emma; and the sensitive Ham, every inch his mother's, with his mysterious wife, Lucy (a.k.a. Lucifer, who, having escaped from Hell, has decided to align himself with mankind). Findley, a great lover of cats, also gives us the crotchety Mottyl, making his way through his ninth and final life. Not Wanted on the Voyage is poetic and passionate and bursting with a wide-eyed inventiveness, at once a stunningly contemporary attempt at mythmaking, a grand novel of the power of the imagination, and a thoroughly good read. --Jeffrey Canton

The culmination and completion of Margaret Laurence’s celebrated Manawaka cycle, The Diviners is an epic novel.

This is the powerful story of an independent woman who refuses to abandon her search for love. For Morag Gunn, growing up in a small Canadian prairie town is a toughening process – putting distance between herself and a world that wanted no part of her. But in time, the aloneness that had once been forced upon her becomes a precious right – relinquished only in her overwhelming need for love. Again and again, Morag is forced to test her strength against the world – and finally achieves the life she had determined would be hers.

The Diviners has been acclaimed by many critics as the outstanding achievement of Margaret Laurence’s writing career. In Morag Gunn, Laurence has created a figure whose experience emerges as that of all dispossessed people in search of their birthright, and one who survives as an inspirational symbol of courage and endurance.

The Diviners received the Governor General’s Award for Fiction for 1974.

From the Paperback edition.

--Scarbo

As the story opens, Lily, the heroine of Timothy Findley's Victorian-Gothic-style novel as seen through the narrative of her son Charlie, is ending her days in an asylum; her life unfolds as a Dickensian tale of deprivation and struggle between the feminine and the coldly masculine, leading to that "madwoman in the attic" denouement. Yet Charlie is reclaiming his mother's life through his loving telling of her story. "She could break your heart with that riveting gaze," he says. Music, vaudeville, and silent movies resonate through the lives in the novel, set in turn-of-the-century Toronto. Findley is a best-selling and award-winning Canadian writer, author of The Wars and Famous Last Words.

It doesn't take long to discover the literary classic at the heart of Timothy Findley's dystopian novel Headhunter. Lilah Kemp, schizophrenic and one of a triumvirate of main characters, announces in the opening scene that she may have released the character of Kurtz from the pages of Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness. Add to this fantastic formula a couple of psychiatrists named Charles Marlow and Rupert Kurtz and a huge cast of secondary players set in a futuristic pollution- and plague-ravaged Toronto, and you are left with a bizarre reinterpretation of not just one of the classics of literature, but the age-old tale of power and corruption itself. Conrad did not invent this story, Findley shrewdly points out; he just gave it a name: Kurtz.
This is vintage Findley, who similarly re-imagined the Old Testament story of Noah and the Flood in Not Wanted on the Voyage. Headhunter is another example of Findley's ability to blend morality and entertainment. Findley's willingness to blend literature and pulp is Headhunter's greatest asset. You can get lost in the rollicking good fun of the sci-fi dystopia or you can dredge its depths for literary clues. Or you can do both. Either way, Headhunter lives up to both its best-seller and literary status. --Jonathan Dewar

Like it 1977 predecessor The Wars, Timothy Findley's 1981 Famous Last Words ruthlessly examines the (often violent) nature of social division and union, as well as the making of history. Together these two novels mark the peak of Findley's career. While the slim Wars focuses largely on a single Canadian soldier in the First World War, Famous Last Words observes the next war--sometimes in the wings, sometimes from a distant office--through expatriate American writer Hugh Selwyn Mauberley. The title character in a well-known poem by the infamous Ezra Pound ("born / In a half savage country-- / Bent resolutely on wringing lilies from the acorn"), Mauberley gives Findley a focus point for his forceful moral questions. Can bad people produce good art? (Good anything?) Are actions really excused by explanations?
Findley's career as a professional actor is nowhere more present than in this fascinating novel of revelatory props, coded dialogue, and emblematic settings. Mauberley's participation in an international cabal of intelligentsia and power brokers also lends Famous Last Words the suspense of an espionage novel. This fictional group, devoted to creating a new, post-national Europe, anticipates the migrant fixations of so many of Findley's fellow Canadian novelists. Like the characters of Mordecai Richler, Rohinton Mistry, Guy Vanderhaeghe, and Mavis Gallant, Findley's Mauberley is, in Michael Ondaatje's phrase, another "international bastard--born in one place and choosing to live elsewhere. Fighting to get back to or get away from our homelands all our lives." --Darryl Whetter

     Lust. Infidelity. Betrayal. Murder.
On a summer evening in Stratford, Ontario, the errant thrust of agardener's spade slices a telephone cable into instant silence. The resulting disconnection is devastating. With the failure of one call to reach a house, an ambitious young actor becomes the victim of sexual blackmail. The blocking of a second call leads tragically to murder. And when a Bell Canada repairman arrives to mend the broken line, his innocent yet irresistible male beauty has explosive consequences.

In Spadework, Timothy Findley, master storyteller and playwright, has created an electric wordplay of infidelity and morality set on the stage of Canada's preeminent theater town. In this fictional portrait, intrigue, passion, and ambition are always waiting in the wings. Findley peoples the town with theater folk, artists, writers, and visitors (both welcome and unwelcome), and with lives that are immediately recognizable as "Findley-esque" -- the lonely, the dispossessed, and the sexually troubled.

A story that ripples with ever-widening repercussions, a sensual, witty, and completely absorbing novel, Spadework is another Timothy Findley winner.

History informs, but rarely touches. Its language is that of actualities--of numbers and places and names--not of the heart. Story of a Nation is an attempt to make historical facts more real through the use of fiction, with 12 pieces, some by heavy-hitters like Margaret Atwood and Timothy Findley, and some by young mavericks like Hal Niedzviecki and Michael Turner. Four of the most compelling stories reduce--or elevate--a period of history to a love story. Roch Carrier's "Gold and Sawdust," a tale set during the Klondike gold rush of two brothers and the woman both love, ends in horribly ironic tragedy. David McFarlane's "The First of July" shares with its protagonist the revelation of history being, in the end, about real people: a series of love letters proves that the old, scary woman down the road was once a young Newfoundland woman in love with a soldier who met a brutal end in the First World War. American expat Michelle Berry's attempts to come to terms with her adopted country's national obsession results in "Henderson Has Scored for Canada!", a story in which she folds the historic Canada/Russia hockey games of 1972 into a tense domestic drama. Dionne Brand's "One Down" reveals how a single act of racism, in this instance in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, in 1946, can come between two people. "Jack is not with you now, he is not in that photograph at the Hi-Hat Club on Columbus Avenue in Boston," writes Brand, who has pieced together the story of Viola Desmond and her battle with the racist Roseland Theatre using photographs and newspaper accounts. "Good as he was, a distance opened up between you that Friday in November 1946 when the Dodge broke down. Not right away, but little by little."
There are other fine tales in Story of a Nation that don't touch on love at all—Niedzviecki's "Very Nice, Very Nice" combines two of the author's obsessions, filmmaker Arthur Lipsett and Toronto commune Rochdale. And Thomas King's "Where the Borg Are" tells of a young Native boy's attempts to understand government aboriginal policy in terms of Star Trek. Not all of the stories are as successful as these are, but more often than not this beautifully designed, heavily illustrated book finds the perfect pitch between the cold facts of history and the yearnings of the human heart. --Shawn Conner

The Trials of Ezra Pound is a stark portrayal of Ezra Pound at the end of his public life. Based upon the preliminary hearings of the trials held in Washinton, D.C. in late 1945 and early 1946, Timothy Findley reveals what the original transcripts do not - Pound's emotionally charged interpretation of the events and his self-destruction. By letting Pound pace impatiently between time and place, Findley conducts a rare dramatic dance in The Trials of Ezra Pound - he takes the trial beyond one courtroom and into the realm of all humanity and it is here, in the light of Ezra Pound's harsh contradictions, that Findley asks the reader not to judge, but how to judge.
In the extraordinary stories of this collection, random events interrupt seemingly quiet lives, forcing people to accept consequences and make choices. Whether exploring the complexity of female sexuality or the horror of urban violence, Marshall’s fiction is always a passionate engagement with contemporary life.

This original New Canadian Library collection brings together 12 of Marshall’s best stories, including two stories here published for the first time.

Great Canadian War Stories shows how the experience of Canada at war captured the imagination of fiction writers across the country. With selections from Timothy Findley, Joy Kogawa, Louis Caron, Thomas H. Raddall, Earle Birney, Roch Carrier and others, this audiobook chronicles the scope of Canadian war efforts in the first half of the twentieth century. From the trenches of the Western Front to the plains of the Spanish Civil War, from the skies of North Africa to the jungles of Borneo, Canadian writers present the face of war in its many guises. There are women and children who have lost their homes, and men who have lost their dreams and lives. There are strangers brought together by accident and bound in loyalty. There are adventurers and deserters, volunteers and victims, all revealed with an unmistakable authenticity of voice.
