A masterpiece nearly twenty years in the making, this archival, oversized, and slipcased hardcover volume contains the complete life story of Martha Washington, the twenty-first century freedom fighter created by comic-book megastars Frank Miller (Sin City, 300) and Dave Gibbons (Watchmen). Our story begins in the squalid corridors of a maximum-security housing project, where a young girl will rise from the war-torn streets of Chicago to battle injustice in a world insane with corruption. Her fight will take her far, from the frontlines of the second American Civil War, to the cold, unforgiving reaches of space. She will be called a hero, a traitor, and nearly everything in between, but all along the way, her courage, her integrity, and her unwavering commitment to that most valuable of rights - liberty - will inspire a movement that will never surrender!

--Simon Weinert

Despite its acronym-laden title, Professional SQL Server 7.0 Development Using SQL-DMO, SQL-NS & DTS is actually a very readable and approachable guide to programming administrative modules for SQL Server 7.0. Aimed at the Visual Basic or C++ programmer, this book delivers a fine guide to the objects, API, and programmer strategies you'll need to do more with Microsoft databases.
Any database administrator uses the powerful SQL Server Enterprise Manager for a variety of database tasks, whether designing new databases, tables, and indexes, or backing-up, replicating, and copying data. The goal of this text is to let you perform these tasks programmatically by using the SQL Distributed Management Framework (DMF). After reading this book, you should be able to write programs that automate common database administration tasks.
This title begins with the objects that Enterprise Manager uses to do its work, known as the SQL Distributed Management Objects (SQL-DMO). The authors walk through the object model here and show off common tasks, such as configuring SQL Server 7.0, creating indexes, and doing backups programmatically. There's also good coverage of role-based security through objects, as well as a later section that explores your options for managing replication in your own programs. While SQL-DMO exposes much of the underlying functionality of Enterprise Manager, the SQL Namespace (SQL-NS) objects let you borrow the actual dialog boxes and wizard screens in custom applications.
A final group of objects, the Data Transformation Services (DTS), lets you copy and transform data between one data source and another. The authors look at both the wizard-based DTS tools and the underlying objects for use within your own code.
Besides a tutorial to some of the tasks that can be automated by using SQL-DMF, this volume doubles as a reference, listing over 60 objects and 1,000 methods. This surprisingly useful and accessible title can get you started thinking on how to simplify database administration in custom programs by using these powerful SQL Server APIs, both in stand-alone applications and ASP-based Web pages. --Richard Dragan
Topics covered: Introduction to SQL Server 7.0 administration with SQL Distributed Management Framework (SQL-DMF), overview of Windows Distributed interNet Applications Architecture (DNA), SQL Distributed Management Objects (SQL-DMO), starting, stopping and configuring servers; querying database and table information, building indexes, role-based security and user management, backup and restore with SQL-DMO, scheduling jobs with the SQL Agent, SQL Namespace (SQL-NS) objects for accessing Enterprise Manager dialog boxes and wizards, deploying SQL-DMF applications, replication management, Data Transformation Services (DTS): wizards, tools, and programmatic access; installing and using the Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE), tutorial for using SQL-DMO with Visual C++, complete SQL-DMF object and method reference.

The United States' first venture into a phantasy future as the world's first self-proclaimed hegemon began in March, 2003. Launching a war that had no germ of justification, and ignoring the jihadists who had attacked the homeland on 9/11, American troops following orders completed the conquest of Victim No. 1 in little more than a month.

As many authorities agree, and as The Quagmire Chronicles makes clear, the Iraq war was the wrong conflict in the wrong place at the wrong time. Expanding steadily, it became an incubus on not only the United States but the entire Muslim world. By itself the war created a new terror organization/network and a new threat. The insurgency that America had spawned and maintained turned Iraq into a Vietnam-style quagmire.

Inevitably, the Iraq adventure has acted like the quagmire it is. The Washington cabal that perpetrated it has spent more than a billion dollars weekly, watched the struggle turn into a bloodbath, floated pipe-dreams in which a democratic Iraq converts its authoritarian neighbors into freedom-loving, liberal states.

Perhaps worst, the war provided cover for the Bush cabal to move the United States toward the status of a dysfunctional two-class society. The rule of law and individual rights fell victim increasingly to the fabricated exigencies of the flagrantly misnamed "war on terror."

Saddled with a government that frivolously launches a war that it can neither win nor leave, what does the United States do? Fated to watch as the nation's future is eroded by the canker of a misbegotten conflict, where can the common people, the working people, the thinking people turn? Condemned to listen to the inanities of an arrogant governing cabal that sees itself as the answer to the world's ills, how do Americans fight back?

The answer must come from the ballot box. But the cabal's relentless and conscienceless manipulations of elections have compromised even that potential solution--and by 2010 may well have proved it yet again.

The details, the scenarios themselves, lie written in the events--and the stars--of today. Read The Quagmire Chronicles to find out how it could happen.

Find out too how long the fiasco might go on, and whether the preemptive war will continue to surface daily as a bloody exercise in hubris, one that is perpetuated for patently quixotic "reasons."

Here is one expert's view, reported from the "ficto-historical" perspective of 2010. Start reading The Quagmire Chronicles today, while its sometimes stunning conclusions are warm off the presses.

In 1991, visionary creator Frank Miller continued his shakedown of the comics industry when he premiered his visceral and powerfully charged Sin City series. With Sin City, Miller sent a shock wave through the industry and beyond, stunning critics and amazing readers, the after-affects of which are still being felt today. While Miller is primarily praised for his outstanding stories, it is his breathtaking artwork that continues to shine on. To honor the artist and his groundbreaking work, Dark Horse Maverick is pleased to present Frank Miller: The Art of Sin City, a unique and handsomely bound hardcover coffee table book, containing pieces both published and unpublished -- some never before seen by the public. Printed on glossy 100 lb. coated paper stock and featuring items ranging from preliminary sketches to promotional pieces, this beautiful edition holds everything a Sin City fan, or connoisseur of fine art, could ever hope for.
