Responsibility. Courage. Compassion. Honesty. Friendship. Persistence. Faith. Everyone recognizes these traits as essentials of good character. In order for our children to develop such traits, we have to offer them examples of good and bad, right and wrong. And the best places to find them are in great works of literature and exemplary stories from history.

Bennett has collected hundreds of stories in this instructive and inspiring anthology that will help children understand and develop character -- and help adults teach them. From the Bible to American history, from Greek mythology to English poetry, from fairy tales to modern fiction, these stories are a rich mine of moral literacy, a reliable moral reference point that will help anchor our children and ourselves in our culture, our history, and our traditions -- the sources of the ideals by which we wish to live our lives.

Complete with instructive introductions and notes, this is a book the whole family can read and enjoy -- and learn from -- together.

America, how well do you know your history?

Who quelled a coup d'etat by putting on a pair of reading glasses?

Which U.S. senator was nearly caned to death on the Senate floor?

Which first lady refused to serve alcohol in the White House?

What famous inventor was called to find the assassin's bullet in President Garfield's back?

Which successful candidate for president insisted on telling the truth about his sex scandal?

Which beloved ex-president raced with death and poverty to write his best-selling memoirs and which famous humorist came to his rescue?

Which president carefully read the trial notes of 303 condemned Sioux warriors and spared all but 38 from the hangman's noose?

Which "four-eyed" future president beat up a drunken bully in a saloon?

In his Farewell Address, Ronald Reagan said if we forget what we have done, we will forget who we are. This book, written by one of Reagan's most loyal lieutenants, responds to Reagan's heartfelt call for an informed patriotism.

We all need to know more about this land we love. In this gripping tale of a nation, our country's past comes alive. Here is the story of those we chose to lead us and what they did with the awesome power we gave them. Join Bill Bennett for the great adventure. America's teacher will lead you on a voyage of discovery.

What others are saying:

"William J. Bennett artfully and subtly makes connections between our past and current events, reminding us ... that we are intimately and immediately connected to the extraordinary Americans who have bestowed upon us our great heritage.... [T]he importance of America: The Last Best Hope probably exceeds anything Dr. Bennett has ever written, and it is more elegantly crafted and eminently readable than any comprehensive work of history I've read in a very long time. It's silly to compare great works of history to great novels, but this book truly is a page-turner.... Prepare to have your faith in, hope for, and love of America renewed."
-Brad Miner, American Compass

"The Role of history is to inform, inspire, and sometimes provoke us, which is why Bill Bennett's wonderfully readable book is so important. He puts our nation's triumphs, along with its lapses, into the context of a narrative about the progress of freedom. Every now and then it's useful to be reminded that we are a fortunate people, blessed with generations of leaders who repeatedly renewed the meaning of America."
-Walter Isaacson, Benjamin Franklin: An American Life

"For too long Americans have been looking for a history of our country that tells the story of America's triumphs as well as its tragedies. Now Bill Bennett has come forward with America: The Last Best Hope, which tells the story-fairly and fully-from 1492 to 1914. Americans who have been reading recent biographies of the Founding Fathers will love this book."
-Michael Barone, US News & World Report

"Bill Bennett's book will stand as perhaps the most important addition to American scholarship at this, the start of the new century. For the past fifty years American historians have either distorted American history or reduced it to a mess of boring indictments of our cultural and political heritage. With this book Bennett offers to Americans young and old an exciting and enjoyable history of what makes America the greatest nation on earth.
-Brian Kennedy, president, The Claremont Institute

The Educated Child defines a good education and offers parents a plan of action for ensuring that their children achieve it. Combining the goals that William Bennett enumerated as Secretary of Education, key excerpts from E. D. Hirsch's Core Knowledge Sequence, and the latest research, it sets forth clear curricula and specific objectives for children from kindergarten through the eighth grade, including:
What children should be studying and the kind of work they should be doing
Important facts to learn and essential reading lists
When children should master specific math skills, spelling and grammar basics, and scientific facts
Test preparation, homework, and other areas that require parental involvement
The Educated Child also examines timely issues such as school choice, sex education, character education, and the phonics/whole language debate. Perhaps most important, it encourages parents to become advocates for their children by learning what to look for in a good school, how to talk to educators, and how, when necessary, to push for needed changes. For parents concerned about their children's current education and future lives, it is the ultimate handbook.

Now his inspiring and instructive volume, The Moral Compass, offers more examples of good and bad, right and wrong, in great works from literature and in exemplary stories from history.
Organized by the stages along life's journey, The Moral Compass moves from the first character lessons taught in the home to the countless choices that call the virtues into play. The stories and poems continually serve as reference points on a moral compass, guiding the reader through the ethical and spiritual challenges along the pathway of life: leaving home, entering into marriage, easing the burdens of others, nurturing one's children, and fulfilling the obligations of citizenship and leadership.
Offering well-known examples from Western history and mythology along with tales and folklore from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, The Moral Compass is an indispensable guide for the family to meet the challenges of life at any age.

In this new, updated edition of a book heralded as a clarion call to the nation's conscience, William Bennett asks why we see so little public outrage in the fade of the evidence of deep corruption within Bill Clinton's administration. The Death of Outrage examines the Monica Lewinsky scandal as it unfolded, from Clinton's denials that he had had sex with a young White House intern, to his testimony before the grand jury, to the nation's decision not to remove Clinton from office. Brick by brick, Bennett dismantles the wall of defenses offered by Clinton and his apologists, and casts the clear light of moral reason and common sense on a shameful chapter in American history.

Millions of American families have turned to The Book of Virtues and The Moral Compass by William J. Bennett for moral guidance in troubled times. Our Sacred Honor offers inspiration and instruction as well...this time of a particularly American sort.
The lessons it contains are especially welcome. We live in a time when the practice of representative government in the United States of America is under siege from both the left and the right. Scandals abound. We are first shocked, then wearied, to learn that our national leaders have feet of clay. We live in a time, in short, which demands that we return to our origins to discover the common principles that make us essentially American. Our Sacred Honor reveals those common principles. They are articulated by the flawed but deeply admirable men and women who first wrote what it is to be American. The pledge made by the Founders to one another that hot July day in 1776—the pledge of "our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor"—has been redeemed many times in the centuries since, but the nation they founded has never failed to profit from their example.
It is time to profit from their advice.
In Our Sacred Honor, William J. Bennett has collected the best that has been thought and said by and about the men and women who founded America. And what a group they are: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John and Abigail Adams, and so many more that otherwise first-rate intellects such as John Dickinson, Benjamin Rush, and George Mason are relegated to the status of footnotes in the popular imagination. Not since Periclean Athens has such a small nation been led by so many larger-than-life figures. The only characteristic they shared more widely than revolutionary ardor was their talent (and inclination) for advice. Here is that advice on virtually every aspect of "the good"—good government, good relations between individuals and nations, and what it means to live a good life. Here are Thomas Jefferson on piety ("Adore God. Murmur not at the ways of Providence"); James Madison on justice ("It ever has been, and ever will be pursued, until it be obtained, or until liberty be lost in the pursuit"); and Patrick Henry on patriotism ("Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?"). Here are Abigail Adams on love ("When he is wounded, I bleed..."); Benjamin Franklin on industry ("Have you somewhat to do tomorrow, do it today"); and George Washington on friendship ("Be courteous with all, but intimate with few"). Here are the lyrics to "Yankee Doodle," Longfellow's celebration of the midnight ride of Paul Revere, and the Declaration of Independence. Here are the stories of the Liberty Bell, Washington at Valley Forge, and Nathan Hale. Here are selections from The Federalist Papers, and Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Concord Hymn," with "the shot heard round the world." Here are Poor Richard's Almanack, the extraordinary correspondence between John and Abigail Adams, and George Washington's Farewell Address.
The stories, songs, letters, and speeches collected in Our Sacred Honor are an inspiring celebration of American exceptionalism, produced by a collection of exceptional Americans. It is the best book of advice in more than two hundred years.

    365 reasons to love America!
The fife and drum of history mark the time of each passing day. And within their cadence, personalities, conflicts, discoveries, ideas, and nations peal and fade. American history is no different. From the starving time of Jamestown during the Winter of 1609, through the bloody argument of the Civil War, and to today, the United States is a tale best told one day at a time.

Best-selling author and educator Dr. William J. Bennett is a master of the story that is the United States. And in The American Patriot's Almanac, Bennett distills the American drama into three hundred sixty-five entries-one for each day of the year. Fascinating in its detail and singular in its grasp of the big themes, Bennett's Almanac will make anyone a fan of history, assembling even some of the most obscure details. Even better, it will make of everyone a patriot.

Bestselling author William J. Bennett says he was inspired by displays of patriotism after the September 11 terrorist attacks, but he was also struck by how "some were quick to find us to blame." He worries that this "countermovement of America-bashing" will make the United States lose its resolve: "What I fear is the erosion of moral clarity, and the spread of indifference and confusion, as a thousand voices discourse with energy and zeal on the questionable nature, if not the outright illegitimacy, of our methods or our cause." Bennett cites dozens of examples of professors who decry U.S. foreign policy and pundits who object to so much flag flying. While recognizing that these are minority views, he concludes that Osama bin Laden caught Americans with their defenses down--not just physical and military defenses, but also moral and intellectual ones. "Many of us have forgotten what we once knew about our freedoms and our decencies, and we have forgotten why, time and time again, we have had to rally ourselves to the point of ultimate sacrifice to defend them," writes Bennett, who also appraises Islam and defends Israel on these pages. Why We Fight is short and quickly read--and worthwhile for anybody who wants to be reminded of first principles during the war on terrorism. --John Miller

William J. Bennett reacquaints America with its heritage in two volumes of America: The Last Best Hope.

While national test scores reveal that American students know startlingly little about their history, former U.S. Education Secretary William J. Bennett offers one of the most gripping and memorable versions of the American story in print. The two volumes of Bennett's New York Times bestselling epic, America: The Last Best Hope, cover Columbus's discovery of the New World in the fifteenth century to the fall of world communism in the twentieth. Now both volumes are available in a convenient and attractive slip case-complete with a bonus audio CD, "Remembering Ronald Reagan," featuring recollections and commentary by Jeane Kirkpatrick, Edwin Meese, and others.

Bill Bennett brings American history to life with stories such as:

the coup d'etat quelled by a pair of reading glasses
the U.S. senator nearly caned to death on the Senate floor
the presidential pardon for hundreds of Sioux warriors
one ex-president's race to finish his memoirs and the famous humorist who helped him
when Time magazine named Hitler man of the year
Eisenhower's bold actions documenting the horrors of the Holocaust
Nixon's comic opera uniforms for White House guards
Reagan's most famous example of just saying "No"

From heroism of the Revolution to the dire hours of the Civil War, from the progressive reforms of the early 1900s to the civil rights reforms of the 1960s, from the high drama of the Space Race to the gut-wrenching tension of the Cold War, Bennett slices through the cobwebs of time, memory, and prevailing cynicism to reinvigorate America with an informed patriotism.

Praise for America: The Last Best Hope

"This is the American history that Abraham Lincoln has long awaited."
-Harry V. Jaffa, Crisis of the House Divided

"Bennett has a gift for choosing the pithy, revealing anecdote and for providing fresh character sketches and critical analyses of the leading figures. This is an American history that adults will find refreshing and enlightening and that younger readers will find a darn good read."
-Michael Barone, US News & World Report

"A worthy and necessary book for our time."
-Michael J. Lewis, Commentary

"Bennett ... has a strong sense of narrative, a flair for anecdote and a lively style. And the American story really is a remarkable one, filled with its share of brilliant leaders and tragic mistakes. Bennett brings that story to life."
-Alan Wolfe, The Washington Post

"The role of history is to inform, inspire, and sometimes provoke us, which is why Bill Bennett's wonderfully readable book is so important. He puts our nation's triumphs, along with its lapses, into the context of a narrative about the progress of freedom. Every now and then it's useful to be reminded that we are a fortunate people, blessed with generations of leaders who repeatedly renewed the meaning of America."
-Walter Isaacson, Benjamin Franklin: An American Life

"The importance of America: The Last Best Hope probably exceeds anything Dr. Bennett has ever written, and it is more elegantly crafted and eminently readable than any comprehensive work of history I've read in a very long time. It's silly to compare great works of history to great novels, but this book truly is a page-turner."
-Brad Miner, American Compass

"This lively book acknowledges mistakes and shortcomings, yet patriotically asserts that the American experiment in democracy is still a success story."
-School Library Journal

"Bill Bennett's book will stand as perhaps the most important addition to American scholarship at this, the start of the new century.... With this book Bennett offers to Americans young and old an exciting and enjoyable history of what makes America the greatest nation on earth.
-Brian Kennedy, president, The Claremont Institute

Bestselling author William Bennett addresses the central social issue of our time—the deline of the family—in a book as intellectually provocative and politically controversial as his landmark The Death of Outrage.

Our recent economic prosperity has masked the devastation of the American family, which is now under seige as never before. From the dramatic rise in illegitimacy, divorce, and single parenthood to the call for the recognition of gay marriages, the traditional nuclear family is being radically challenged and undermined, along with the moral and legal consensus that once supported it.

Now in The Broken Hearth, William Bennett, America's foremost conservative spokesperson on matters of family values, presents a strong, well-reasoned, and informed defense of the traditional family. Interweaving history, anthropology, law, social science, and the teachings of Western religions, he argues that marriage between a man and a woman and the creation of a permanent, loving, and nurturing environment for children is a great historical achievement, one that should not be lightly abandoned in favor of more "progressive" arrangements. Bennett displays his ability to combine fearless conviction, acute insight, and respect for his adversaries in thorough, balanced, and enlightening discussions of single parenthood, cohabitation, gay marriage, and other trends that are undercuttingthe ideal of the family as the essential foundation of society.

Looking closely at the concerns and questions that divide America, Bennett provides a powerful affirmation of family life and the values and benefits it bestows on individuals and on society as a whole.

From the Hardcover edition.

William Bennett and Michael Hague, the team that brought us the national bestseller The Children's Book of Virtues, have once again collaborated to create The Children's Book of Heroes, a beautifully illustrated celebration of heroic deeds, both real and fictional, that will delight and inspire millions of young children and their parents.
"We all need a hero or two to help us stand fast and think right," says William J. Bennett, author of The Book of Virtues, the #1 bestseller that millions of American families turn to for moral inspiration. With excerpts chosen for young children, this new treasury presents splendid tales of the valor and indomitable spirit that are a lasting testament to our cherished values.
Jackie Robinson stands fast on the playing field -- and his strength of character inspires a nation.
No one sets the record straight like bestselling author William J. Bennett. In The De-Valuing of America, one of our leading conservatives gives us a provocative and unblinking critique of what is wrong with our nation in areas ranging from drugs to education to race relations, and provides an inspiring vision to turn the tide.
In this remarkably candid personal account, Bennett reveals what he saw and what he learned -- and the people he came across and was crossed by -- during his controversial years as Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Secretary of Education, and Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. In the straightforward style that has become his trademark, he tells us what's right and what's wrong with American education; discusses the heroes, villains, and shirkers in the war against drugs; analyzes the decline in standards and common sense on our college campuses; and offers his assessment of the failures of contemporary liberalism.
Written with force and passion, The De-Valuing of America is a cry of alarm -- an honest, unsparing account of what has gone wrong in American society, and a tough-minded personal assessment of how to reclaim our culture and protect and nurture our children.

Conservative social critic and former Bush "drug czar" William J. Bennett collects here over 30 secular fables, prayers, Bible stories, and poems, all devoted to a central theme: "reinforcing the vital lessons all parents must teach" about home and family life.
Some of the entries address intersibling relations (like "The Hill," adapted from Laura Richards, and Aesop's classic "The Bundle of Sticks"), while others focus on the love of husbands and wives for their children ("What Bradley Owed," adapted from Hugh T. Kerr) and for one another ("The Water of Youth," adapted from Rudolph Baumbach). Poems and prayers from Alfred, Lord Tennyson ("What Does Little Birdie Say?") and Robert Louis Stevenson ("Prayer for Home and Family") help class up the book, complementing Michael Hague's '50s-style, quasi-Rockwellian illustrations.
While many of the lessons imparted here are inarguably "vital," parents should beware that the book still carries some not-so-subtle political freight, which you might or might not buy into: As Bennett makes clear in his grownup books (The Broken Hearth: Reversing the Moral Collapse of the American Family, etc.), references to "husband and wife" mean that and only that. Likewise, don't be surprised by antiquated takes on gender roles (as in "The Husband Who Was to Mind the House") and that the only black characters in the book have tribal names like Keen-Eyes, Sharp-Ears, and Strong-Arms. (The sole Hispanic family lucks out with some good Catholic names, but Hague's proto-Israelites in a King Solomon story still look pretty conventionally European.) (Ages 9 to 12) --Paul Hughes

Timeless biblical stories are lovingly brought to a child's level in this read-aloud treasury. Editor William Bennett (The Children's Book of Virtues) starts with "Daniel in the Lion's Den," a story that epitomizes the courage it takes to stand firm in one's faith. While he also includes the story of "The Little Lost Lamb" (based on Luke 15: 3-7), Bennett is broad-minded enough to include numerous other stories that touch upon the meaning of faith without being biblical in origin. For instance, young readers will be exposed to great writers such as Leo Tolstoy in the short story "Where Love Is, God Is" and Oscar Wilde in "The Selfish Giant." Although the old-fashioned style of illustrations will no doubt feel nostalgic for some, they are also a throwback to a time when white folks were the only people represented in children's Christian literature. Even Moses has light skin. One of the few characters to actually have color in his face is the bald, brown-skinned devil. A shameful lapse in an otherwise noble attempt.

For decades Americans have turned to the Commerce Department's Index of Leading Economic Indicators to spot trends in the economy. The Index of Leading Cultural Indicators brings a similar kind of empirical analysis to the moral, social, and behavioral condition of American society from 1960 to the present--a vivid, clearly accessible portrait in numbers of who and where we are as a nation.

First published in 1994 and now completely updated and considerably expanded, it draws from a wide array of government sources and academic studies to offer comprehensive chapters on crime, the family, youth behavior, education, popular culture, and religion, as well as new chapters on civic participation, international comparisons, and decade-by-decade comparisons. For each topic covered, there are statistical and numerical breakdowns; tables and graphs; ranking of states; and a "Factual Overview" interpreting the data. The Index of Leading Cultural Indicators should serve as the starting point of any discussion about America's moral and cultural condition.

William J. Bennett's provocative introduction provides the essential context and perspective for the data he's collected, offering an assessment of the problems besetting modern America. Some have gotten better--most notably, crime and welfare rates--leading him to conclude that politics and public engagement in social issues can make more of a difference than he once thought. But there is much else of a worrying nature, and Bennett pulls no punches in identifying pathologies and laying out the challenges we face. No one who cares about American society and a whole range of social issues can afford to be without this essential volume--a statistical snapshot, an invaluable sourcebook, and a call to action.

If it is difficult to take seriously a book on crime-fighting that starts by calling the Reagan-Bush drug war "the most successful attack on a serious social problem in the last quarter-century," consider that the authors up the ante with their alarmist forecasts of an approaching wave of youthful "super-predators," members of "the youngest, biggest and baddest generation any society has ever known." Evidence for this army of thugs seems slight in the face of sharp nationwide declines in rates of violent crime, but then former drug czar and self-appointed virtue expert William Bennett is preaching to the choir here anyway.

    Introduction by William J. Bennett
In this thoroughly revised and expanded edition of the Intercollegiate Studies Institute's critically acclaimed college guide, Choosing the Right College, 110 of the nation's top colleges and universities are examined in essays averaging 3,000 words. The first edition (1998), which saw four printings, set new standards for the college guide market, including informed, critical essays, the names of the best professors at each campus, and rigorous research. No other college guide so closely examines every school's academic, political, and social situation. Additions to this second edition include ten more essays, revised and updated coverage of every school, a new essay on liberal learning, and increased coverage of student life. For practical help, tuition, enrollment, and other important facts are included for each school.
