A vibrant collection of essays on the cosmos from the nation's best-known astrophysicist.

Loyal readers of the monthly "Universe" essays in Natural History magazine have long recognized Neil deGrasse Tyson's talent for guiding them through the mysteries of the cosmos with stunning clarity and almost childlike enthusiasm. Here, Tyson compiles his favorite essays across a myriad of cosmic topics. The title essay introduces readers to the physics of black holes by explaining the gory details of what would happen to your body if you fell into one. "Holy Wars" examines the needless friction between science and religion in the context of historical conflicts. "The Search for Life in the Universe" explores astral life from the frontiers of astrobiology. And "Hollywood Nights" assails the movie industry's feeble efforts to get its night skies right.

Known for his ability to blend content, accessibility, and humor, Tyson is a natural teacher who simplifies some of the most complex concepts in astrophysics while simultaneously sharing his infectious excitement about our universe.

The New York Times best-selling irrational love affair with Pluto,
In August 2006, the International Astronomical Union voted Pluto out of planethood. Far from the sun, wonder Pluto has any fans. Yet during the mounting debate over rallied behind the extraterrestrial underdog. Disney created an irresistible pup by the same name, and, as one NASA scientist put it, Pluto was "discovered by an American for America." Pluto is entrenched in our cultural, patriotic view of the cosmos, and Neil deGrasse Tyson is on a quest to discover why.

Only Tyson can tell this story: he was involved in the first exhibits to demote Pluto, and, consequently, Pluto lovers have freely shared their opinions with him, including endless hate mail from third graders. In his typically witty way, Tyson explores the history of planet recently been judged a dwarf.
35 color, 10 black-and-white.

This witty and amusing exploration of the physical universe explains fundamental concepts in language that is clear to anyone with little or no scientific background. Tyson transforms everyday experiences into venues of cosmic enlightenment as he probes the philosophy, methods, and discoveries of science, including stellar evolution, the conservation of energy, the electromagnetic spectrum, gravity and thermodynamics. Deftly demystifying astronomical terms and concepts such as the Big Bang, black holes, redshifts, syzygy, and Kirkwood Gaps, Universe Down to Earth traces the life of the stars from birth to death; presents the Periodic Table of Elements, highlighting noteworthy elements such as titanium, iron, and hydrogen; gives an unorthodox yet entertaining tour of famous constellations; and tackles modern-day astrology.

A twenty-first century look at our Sun, its planets, and their moons-including the latest research and technology on studying and defining the mysteries of space.
Over the last few decades our knowledge of the universe and what resides within it has expanded enormously. This exciting new book adds a modern sense of perspective to the stars above by comparing the very latest research and the most up-to-date technology with traditional beliefs-how ancient astronomers made sense of the heavens- presented in clear, easy-to-understand, exciting dialogue. With a twist of the wheel, the book's easy-to-use planisphere shows the positions of the stars at any time, on any day, and any latitude-complete with a description and examples on how to use it. The planisphere is a great way to chart the stars as you read through the book and discover the new solar system.

In these pages you'll find the evolving understanding of the solar system. A detailed overview examines how we read the night sky; constellations and the zodiac; motion of the planets; comparative sizes and locations; where the asteroid belt is; comets; satellites; theories of planet formation; and much more.

With over 200 full-color photographs and a 4-page gatefold of the galaxies, this beautifully illustrated guide will fill you with awe at the mysteries of space.

In a companion volume to Merlin's Tour of the Universe, here is a completely new collection of questions and answers about the cosmos for stargazers of all ages. Whether waxing about Earth and its environs, the Sun and its stellar siblings, the world of light, physical laws, or galaxies near and far, Merlin--a fictional visitor from Planet Omniscia--is easy to understand, often humorous, and always entertaining.
Merlin fields a wide range of questions from many curious mortals, and in so doing draws on his own vast knowledge as well as the expertise of many close friends, including Archimedes, Galileo, Einstein, and Santa.
So far, Merlin has not been stumped, responding to questions on mysteries such as:

If aliens exploded our moon, what effect would it have on us?

What are your thoughts on the theory that a star named Nemesis is circling our solar system and was responsible for killing off the dinosaurs?

Is it true that if I leave a container on my roof for a period of time, I can actually collect space particles from outer space?
Delightfully illustrated throughout, Just Visiting This Planet is a skywatcher's book for lovers of the universe by one of its brightest lights.

Physically and intellectually, the celestial bodies that move about the universe seem unreachable to us from our Earth-bound vantage. But recent discoveries in astronomy and physics reveal that the principles that govern our everyday life and the workings of the cosmos are one and the same.
In ONE UNIVERSE: At Home in the Cosmos, Neil de Grasse Tyson, Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, Charles Liu, an astrophysicist at the Museum, and Robert Irion, a contributing editor and correspondent to Astronomy and Science, make it clear that what happens in our kitchens and backyards are simply variations on cosmic processes.
In straightforward language and everyday analogies, the authors take us on a journey through the universe, from the infinitesimal to the infinite, stopping along the way to explain these grand and simple connections. We come to see that the force of gravity that finally lands a home-run ball in the bleachers keeps the moon in orbit. Or that the crystal in the window that breaks light into sparkling colors is just another version of the crystal scientists use to understand light from galaxies billions of miles from Earth.
Three basic concepts--motion, matter, and energy--lie at the heart of our understanding of the universe. With these three principles in mind, we can expand our knowledge of the universe because we can see how the physics of our world mirror the same physics of our universe. No wall separates the Earth from the rest of the universe. To illustrate the elegance of this concept, ONE UNIVERSE draws on a glorious album of space photographs, some seen here for the first time, and diagrams and illustrations drawn especially for the book. The book is being published in conjunction with the opening of the new $200 million Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History. The centerpiece of the Rose Center is the new Hayden Planetarium, the first 21st-century planetarium.
This 224-page book includes an illustrated timeline of the major advances in astronomy and astrophysics, a glossary, 400 illustrations, full color throughout, and an index.

    From Publishers Weekly
What would it feel like if your spaceship were to venture too close to the black hole lurking at the center of the Milky Way? According to astrophysicist Tyson, director of New York City's Hayden Planetarium, size does matter when it comes to black holes, although the chances of your surviving the encounter aren't good in any case. Tyson takes readers on an exciting journey from Earth's hot springs, where extremophiles flourish in hellish conditions, to the frozen, desolate stretches of the Oort Cloud and the universe's farthest reaches, in both space and time. Tyson doesn't restrict his musings to astrophysics, but wanders into related fields like relativity and particle physics, which he explains just as clearly as he does Lagrangian points, where we someday may park interplanetary filling stations. He tackles popular myths (is the sun yellow?) and takes movie directors—most notably James Cameron—to task for spectacular goofs. In the last section the author gives his take on the hot subject of intelligent design. Readers of Natural History magazine will be familiar with many of the 42 essays collected here, while newcomers will profit from Tyson's witty and entertaining description of being pulled apart atom by atom into a black hole, and other, closer-to-earth, and cheerier, topics. 9 illus. (Jan.)
Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist
Whenever astronomy intrudes on the news, interviewers flock to the telegenic Tyson for an explanation. The high-profile astrophysicist is also an essayist for Natural History, the American Museum of Natural History's monthly that is the source for this volume. His pieces are organized under whimsical banners such as "All the ways the cosmos wants to kill us," and Tyson's style will connect with general readers who are interested in the form the apocalypse will take. Scientists know that in a few billion years, an expanding sun will vaporize the earth, provided it's not been previously destroyed by a rogue black hole. Besides regaling spooky stories, the selections deploy movies as an astronomy popularizer, with Tyson critiquing the accuracy of the sky depicted in various scenes. Elsewhere, topics in the history of astronomy and physics fall into two categories: essays about the discovery of physical laws, and about cosmic objects such as galactic gas clouds and quasars. Whatever readers' scientific tastes, something in Tyson's wide-ranging collection will sate them. Gilbert Taylor
Copyright © American Library Association.
