In his own day the dominant personality of the Western Church, Augustine of Hippo today stands as perhaps the greatest thinker of Christian antiquity, and his Confessions is one of the great works of Western literature. In this intensely personal narrative, Augustine relates his rare ascent from a humble Algerian farm to the edge of the corridors of power at the imperial court in Milan, his struggle against the domination of his sexual nature, his renunciation of secular ambition and marriage, and the recovery of the faith his mother Monica had taught him during his childhood. Now, Henry Chadwick, an eminent scholar of early Christianity, has given us the first new English translation in thirty years of this classic spiritual journey. Chadwick renders the details of Augustine's conversion in clear, modern English. We witness the future saint's fascination with astrology and with the Manichees, and then follow him through scepticism and disillusion with pagan myths until he finally reaches Christian faith. There are brilliant philosophical musings about Platonism and the nature of God, and touching portraits of Augustine's beloved mother, of St. Ambrose of Milan, and of other early Christians like Victorinus, who gave up a distinguished career as a rhetorician to adopt the orthodox faith. Augustine's concerns are often strikingly contemporary, yet his work contains many references and allusions that are easily understood only with background information about the ancient social and intellectual setting. To make The Confessions accessible to contemporary readers, Chadwick provides the most complete and informative notes of any recent translation, and includes an introduction to establish the context. The religious and philosophical value of The Confessions is unquestionable--now modern readers will have easier access to St. Augustine's deeply personal meditations. Chadwick's lucid translation and helpful introduction clear the way for a new experience of this classic.

St Augustine, bishop of Hippo, was one of the central figures in the history of Christianity, and "City of God" is one of his greatest theological works. Written as an eloquent defence of the faith at a time when the Roman Empire was on the brink of collapse, it examines the ancient pagan religions of Rome, the arguments of the Greek philosophers and the revelations of the Bible. Pointing the way forward to a citizenship that transcends the best political experiences of the world and offers citizenship that will last for eternity, "City of God" is one of the most influential documents in the development of Christianity.

Augustinus (354-430 <span class="era">CE), son of a pagan, Patricius of Tagaste in North Africa, and his Christian wife Monica, while studying in Africa to become a rhetorician, plunged into a turmoil of philosophical and psychological doubts in search of truth, joining for a time the Manichaean society. He became a teacher of grammar at Tagaste, and lived much under the influence of his mother and his friend Alypius. About 383 he went to Rome and soon after to Milan as a teacher of rhetoric, being now attracted by the philosophy of the Sceptics and of the Neo-Platonists. His studies of Paul's letters with Alypius and the preaching of Bishop Ambrose led in 386 to his rejection of all sensual habits and to his famous conversion from mixed beliefs to Christianity. He returned to Tagaste and there founded a religious community. In 395 or 396 he became Bishop of Hippo, and was henceforth engrossed with duties, writing and controversy. He died at Hippo during the successful siege by the Vandals.

From Augustine's large output the Loeb Classical Library offers that great autobiography the Confessions (in two volumes); On the City of God (seven volumes), which unfolds God's action in the progress of the world's history, and propounds the superiority of Christian beliefs over pagan in adversity; and a selection of Letters which are important for the study of ecclesiastical history and Augustine's relations with other theologians.

A superb new translation brings the words of Augustine the preacher stirringly to life!

When the great Saint Augustine was called from his country home to become Bishop of Hippo in the fourth century, his new responsibilities took him away from the solitude of his writing and into the glare of the public eye. The author of two of the greatest works of religious literature, Confessions and City of God, Augustine became a shepherd to the people, inspiring and enlightening them with his sermons. His skills as a speaker were as great–if not greater–than his skills as a writer. According to his friend Possidius, “Those who read what Augustine wrote on the divine topics do get something out of them. But those who saw and heard him in person–they were the ones who got heaven and Earth.”

Sermons to the People collects the homilies on the liturgical seasons of the Church Saint Augustine delivered over the course of his lifetime. This Image edition includes the first sermons in that vast collection: from Advent, Christmas, New Year’s, and the Epiphany. Newly translated by William Griffin, they address timeless concerns, including the problems of materialism and the intellectual difficulties of faith. Griffin renders the sermons with such immediacy, it is as though he had been present when Augustine spoke to his flock.

"The Council of Nicaea in 325 AD marked the beginning of a new era in Christianity. For the first time, doctrines were organized into a single creed. The Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers did most of their writing during and after this important event in Church history. Unlike the previous era of Christian writing, the Nicene and Post-Nicene era is dominated by a few very important and prolific writers. In Volume I of the 14-volume collected writings of the Nicenes and Post-Nicenes (first published between 1886 and 1889), readers will discover some of the writings of Saint Augustine, recognized as a great religious figure by many Christian sects. He is the patron of the Augustinian monks, who live their lives according to the values found in Augustine In the Confessions, Augustine speaks honestly about his sins as a youth and the saving grace he discovered when he found God. In the Letters, the true personality of Augustine shines through. He is one of the major theological resources of his time, and so through his correspondences, audiences can see what issues plagued the newly unified Christian religion and come to know the man who helped shape Western religion as we know it."

Saint Augustines ten homilies on the First Epistle of John are among his greatest and most influential works. John and Augustine both develop the same central theme love and in these homilies Augustine uses Johns epistle as a point of departure for exploring the meaning and implications of love with his customary profundity, passion and analytic rigor. As with John, a context of dissension and conflict within the Christian community (the Donatist breakaway from Catholic unity), gives his preaching a tone of urgency and poignancy. Anyone who reads these homilies, universally viewed as classics, cannot fail to be moved and challenged both intellectually and emotionally.

1886. Volume 2 of a 14 volume set. The "City of God" is a masterpiece of the greatest genius among the Latin Fathers that embodies the results of thirteen years of intellectual labor and study. It is a vindication of Christianity against the attacks of the heathen in view of the sacking of the city of Rome by the barbarians. It is the first attempt at a philosophy of history, under the aspect of two rival cities or communities; the eternal city of God and the perishing city of the world. This is the best known and most read work of St. Augustin's next to his Confessions.

The seven works of Augustine that are contained in this volume all deal with the problem of faith in God. They were written over the course of three decades, beginning with True Religion (390) and extending to the Enchiridion on Faith, Hope, and Charity (c. 421). Hence this selection of writings provides an impressive insight into the intellectual and spiritual development of one of the greatest of all Western minds, as it grappled with a question that has never ceased to preoccupy and stimulate Western thought Is it reasonable to believe in God, and what form might such belief take? Each of these seven works is a new translation into contemporary English, and each is introduced by the German Augustinian scholar Michael Fiedrowicz, who has also written a valuable general introduction.

Abridged and adapted for audio 6 CDs / 7 hours. When Aurelius Augustinus set out to write his Confessions in 397 A.D., his intention was to document his recent conversion to Catholicism. Meant to reassure the wary parishioners of Hippo, his new bishopric, of his complete break with Manicheanism and his full faith in his new church, the writings he produced are now considered the first autobiography in existence. The work is unique, being an extended personal portrayal of the life of a noted citizen from an era so remote to today - the 4th century Roman Empire - as to be almost other-worldly; yet Augustine's gift of communication lends a humanistic air to his account that makes it as fresh and as real as when it happened. This audiobook presents the narrative section of The Confessions in a modern translation, offering an outstanding introduction to St. Augustine's life and thought.

At the heart of his brilliant philosophical and theological speculation is his spirituality-a spirituality founded on the reality of the soul's experience of the Trinity in the depths of its interiority.
This book is a collection of his writings, which in every sense must be considered true classics of spirituality in the West. Included are excerpts from Confessions, On the Trinity, The City of God, and Homilies on the Psalms along with the complete texts of the Rule of St. Augustine, On Seeing God, and On the Presence of God.
In speaking of Augustine's relevance for our time, Paul VI said: "If St. Augustine were alive today, he would speak as he spoke a thousand and more years ago. Why? Because he really personifies a humanity that believes, that loves Christ and our beloved God."

The Works of St. Augustine, A Translation for the 21st Century initiated by the late Fr. John Rotelle, OSA has made available to the Englishspeaking world an unprecedented number of Augustines works formerly available only in Latin. There has been an explosion in Augustinian scholarship throughout the last five decades. Until recently, the secondary literature tended to focus on Augustines major treatises the Confessions, The Trinity, Teaching Christianity, and the City of God, the works commonly available in modern language translation. Now a plethora of lesser known works including his sermons and letters has provided new insight into this complex and talented theologian. The eleven volumes of Augustines popular sermons (Sermones ad populum) including the recently discovered Dolbeau sermons expertly translated by Fr. Edmund Hill (19101997) in clear, contemporary English showcase Augustine the brilliant speaker and engaging preacher of the Word and have proven an indispensable resource for contemporary scholarship. Peter Brown and other leading Augustine scholars have turned to the sermons as an indispensable source to nuance and reappraise their earlier positions. Hills translation and extensive notes have received many accolades by scholars but professors have clamored for a one volume anthology in paperback form that would be affordable to students and that could be used as required texts in teaching undergraduates, graduate students and seminarians. Fr. Doyle has undertaken that task and has carefully chosen an anthology that is representative of the bishops finest preaching on a wide range of subjects including God, Christ, sin, grace, conversion, martyrdom, sacraments, marriage, wealth, poverty, Christmas, Easter and living the Christian life. Students and preachers alike will discover Augustines masterful interpretation of the Word of God and creative skills in engaging the people of God by using the finest rhetorical skills available to his time based on the principles taught by Cicero. To engage Christians the preacher must first capture their attention (delectare) in order to teach (docere) fundamental saving truths to persuade (flectere) them to live a life of discipleship and put into practice such high ideals. Essential Sermons will include mostly whole sermons with a brief introduction but in some cases powerful excerpts from lengthy homilies that would have been impossible to incorporate in a one volume work. Fr. Doyle has written a concise Introduction to Augustines preaching and has included a table of themes for easy and convenient consultation.

An unprecedented anthology of apologetics texts with selections from the first century a.d. through the Middle Ages. Includes introductory material, timelines, maps, footnotes, and discussion questions.

The apostle Peter tells us always to be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks us to account for our hope as Christians (1 Peter 3:15). While the gospel message remains the same, such arguments will look different from one age to another.

In the midst of a recent revival in the field of apologetics, few things could be more useful than an acquaintance with some of these arguments for the Christian belief through the ages. This first of two proposed volumes features primary source documents from the time of the early church (100-400) and the Middle Ages (400-1500). Featured apologists include Aristides, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Origen, Athanasius, Augustine, Anselm, and Thomas Aquinas.

The authors provide a preface to each major historical section, with a timeline and a map, then an introduction to each apologist. Each primary source text is followed by questions for reflection or discussion purposes.

St. Augustine of Hippo (b. AD 354) is considered the single most influential theologian in the history of the Church in the western world. His doctrine on marriage and sexuality provided the foundation of Catholic thought on the subject for centuries. In fact, more than fifteen hundred years after he wrote about the "goods" of marriage, Augustine's thoughts structured Pius XI's 1930 encyclical on Christian marriage. This volume masterfully gathers, for the first time, Augustine's principal writings on the subject.

In introducing the collection, Elizabeth Clark provides an uncommonly well balanced portrait of Augustine. She explains that Augustine's sexual ethic took shape as he responded to his opponents: Manicheans and Pelagians, extreme ascetics as well as anti-ascetics. In the atmosphere of raging debates and heresy, Augustine developed a sexual and marital ethic that praised the goodness of creation and of reproduction while upholding the sinfulness of sexual list.

The writings included in this collection document the chronological development of Augustine's sexual ethic. Augustine unveils his thoughts on his turbulent adolescent desires; his entry into the Christian Church; his reaction to the Manichean teachings on the body, reproduction, and marriage; his response to ascetic debates within late-fourth-century Christianity; his discourse with followers of Pelagius; and his eventual statement on original sin, lust, and the goodness of marriage and reproduction.

This volume is the first in the Selections from the Fathers of the Church series, a projected series of volumes on various themes found in the writings of the Church Fathers.

It was written soon after Rome was sacked by the Visigoths in 410. This event left Romans in a deep state of shock, and many saw it as punishment for abandoning their Roman religion. It was in this atmosphere that Augustine set out to provide a consolation of Christianity, writing that, even if the earthly rule of the empire was imperilled, it was the City of God that would ultimately triumph - symbolically, Augustine's eyes were fixed on heaven, a theme repeated in many Christian works of Late Antiquity.

- Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

More e-Books from MobileReference - Best Books. Written at the end of the fourth century, Augustine's rule for clergy in community spread like fire among stubble in the sweeping movement for reform of clerical life in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Among those who lived by it were Premonstratensians (Norbertines), Canons Regular of Saint Augustine and Augustinian Hermits-Martin Luther's order-, several military orders, the Ursulines, Visitation Sisters, and the Dominican friars.
