This entirely new translation of Critique of Pure Reason is the most accurate and informative English translation ever produced of this epochal philosophical text. Though its simple, direct style will make it suitable for all new readers of Kant, the translation displays a philosophical and textual sophistication that will enlighten Kant scholars as well. This translation recreates as far as possible a text with the same interpretative nuances and richness as the original.

Immanuel Kant's Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals ranks alongside Plato's Republic & Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics as one of the most profoundly influential works in moral philosophy ever written. The Metaphysics of Morals is Kant's major work in applied moral philosophy which deals with the basic principles of rights & virtues. It comprises two parts: the Doctrine of Right, which deals with the rights that people have or can acquire, & the Doctrine of Virtue, which deals with the virtues they ought to acquire. Mary Gregor's translation, revised for publication in Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy, is the only complete translation of the whole text. It includes extensive annotation on his difficult, sometimes unfamiliar vocabulary. A new introduction by Roger Sullivan sets the work in its historical & philosophical context.

Kant is the central figure of modern philosophy. He sought to rebuild philosophy from the ground up. He succeeded in permanently changing its problems & methods. This new translation of the Prolegomena, which is the best introduction to his philosophy, presents his thought clearly by paying attention to his original language. Also included are selections from the Critique of Pure Reason, which explicate some of his central arguments, & in which he explains his special terminology. The volume is completed by a historical & philosophical introduction, explanatory notes, a chronology & a guide to further reading.

A Monumental Figure of Western Thought Wrestles with the Question of God

Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) is one of the most influential philosophers in the history of Western philosophy. His contributions have had a profound impact on almost every philosophical movement that followed him.

Kant's teachings on religion were unorthodox in that they were based on rationality rather than revelation. Though logically proving God's existence might be impossible, it is morally reasonable to "act as if there be a God." His strictly rational approach was considered so scandalous that the King of Prussia forbid him to teach or write further on religious subjects, which Kant obeyed until the king's death.

A work of major importance in the history of Western religious thought, Religion Within the Limits of Reason Alone represents a great philosopher's attempt to spell out the form and content of a type of religion grounded in moral reason and meeting the needs of an ethical life.

Rather than a systematic study of theories, the philosopher Kant offers a succinct treatise of his thoughts on education, including a proposal for raising the science of education to academic status, an innovative notion for the 18th century, & a landmark in modern Western education theory.

Über Pädagogik, ed. by Friedrich Theodor Rink (Königsberg: Friederich Nicolovius, 1803), vi, 146pp. [Ak. 9:439-99] “On Education.” Annette Churton, trans. (London: Kegan Paul, 1899).
Despite its popularity, we know almost nothing of the provenance of the material found in this book—whether Rink based it on one or more (or his own) sets of student notes, or on Kant’s own notes or even marginalia in textbooks that Kant used (either Basedow or Bock). No such materials now exist, if they ever did. The only extant student notes from these lectures (if they are student notes) are what are preserved in Rink’s publication; nor do we have available Kant’s copies of the two textbooks that he used in the lectures, which he gave during four semesters. Rink was a theology student at the university during the last semester Kant taught the course (1786/87), but there's no evidence of him attending the lectures.

[Ak. 8:35-42] “An Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment?” Translated by Ted Humphrey in Immanuel Kant, Perpetual Peace and Other Essays (Indianapolis: Hackett, 1983), pp. 41-46. Translated by Mary J. Gregor in Immanuel Kant, Practical Philosophy, edited by Mary J. Gregor (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1996), pp. 17-22.

J. F. Zöllner [bio] published an article in the December 1783 issue of the Berlinische Monatsschrift in which he opposed the institution of civil marriage — an idea suggested in an article anonymously written by the journal’s editor, J. E. Biester [bio], for the previous September issue and which claimed that tying marriage to religion was contrary to Enlightenment ideals. Zöllner countered that marriage was too important an institution for this and required a stability that only religion could provide. The very foundations of morality were being shaken, Zöllner wrote, and we should rethink our steps before “confusing the hearts and minds of the people in the name of Enlightenment” — at which point he asked in a footnote: “What is enlightenment? This question, which is nearly as important as ‘What is truth?’ should be answered before one begins to enlighten.”

Zöllner’s question led to a series of essays appearing in the Berlinische Monatsschrift and elsewhere, most famously Kant’s (Dec. 1784). An essay by Moses Mendelssohn (“On the Question: What is Enlightenment?”) was first delivered as a speech (16 May 1784) before the “Wednesday Society” to which he, Zöllner, Biester, and other leading figures of the Berlin Enlightenment belonged
The search for god is dictated not from without but from a profound sense of one's own moral being & worthiness to be happy. The core of Kant's argument remains relevant to the experience of ordinary persons. He wished to strengthen belief in god & in the spiritual nature of humankind.
This 1763 essay is important in understanding the development of his thought. It exposed the flaw in the Cartesian argument that the existence of a perfect being could be deduced from an idea or concept of such. Similarly, he saw the problem inherent in the Leibnizian view of a philosophical system modeled on mathematics: a philosopher who, like a mathematician, began with an arbitrary definition remained trapped in a circle of words. In The One Possible Basis for a Demonstration of the Existence of God, he diverged from the familiar forms of ontological argument. The result was a brilliant approach to divine being that anticipated his mature Critique of Pure Reason.
With this Bison Book edition, The One Possible Basis appears in paperback for the first time. Gordon Treash's English translation, the only modern one, faces pages containing the original German. Treash, who is a professor of philosophy at Mount Allison Univ., Sackville, New Brunswick, edited, with Paul A. Bogaard, Metaphysics as Foundation: Essays in Honor of Ivor Leclerc. Also available as a Bison Book is Kant's last major essay, The Conflict of the Faculties ('92).
Der einzig mögliche Beweisgrund zu einer Demonstration des Daseins Gottes (Königsberg: Johann Jakob Kanter, 1763), xiv, 205pp. [Ak. 2:65-163] “The Only Possible Argument in Support of a Demonstration of the Existence of God.” Trans. with an intro. by Gordon Treash (Abaris, '79; repr. Univ. of Nebraska Press, '94). Trans. by David Walford & Ralf Meerbote in Immanuel Kant, Theoretical Philosophy 1755-1770 (Cambridge: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1992), pp.111-201.
This bears a “1763” publication date, but was in fact published mid-Dec. of 1762, as suggested by Hamann's letter of 21 Dec. 1762, which notes that the work had “just left the press” [Walford '92, lvii, lix].
Kant argues here that the existence of god is prior to god’s & the world’s possibilility; predication presupposes some prior thing to be predicated, but what exists prior to any & all conditions is “pure existence” (i.e., god).

Many contemporaries criticized him for smashing the Age of Reason. Goethe, however, remarked that reading a page of Kant was like entering a bright well-lit room: The great 18th-century philosopher illuminated everything he ever pondered. The twelve essays in this volume reveal his towering importance as an ethical & social thinker as well as his enduring influence on the shape of philosophy. Included are excerpts from Dreams of a Visionary, Prolegomena to Every Future Metaphysics, Metaphysical Foundations of Morals, Critique of Judgement & Eternal Peace.
As Prof. Carl J. Friedrich writes in his introduction to this volume: "The problem of freedom, the freedom of the human personality to unfold & fulfill its higher destiny, is the central issue of all of Kant's philosophizing."

It is in the interest of the totalitarian state that subjects not think for themselves, much less confer about their thinking. Writing under the hostile watch of Prussian censorship, Kant dared to argue the need for open argument, in the university if nowhere else. In this heroic criticism of repression, first published in 1798, he anticipated the crises that endanger the free expression of ideas in the name of national policy.
Composed of three sections written at different times, The Conflict of the Faculties dwells on the eternal combat between the "lower" faculty of philosophy, which is answerable only to individual reason, & the faculties of theology, law & medicine, which get "higher" precedence in the world of affairs & whose teachings & practices are of interest to governments. He makes clear, for example, the close alliance between the theological faculty & the government that sanctions its teachings & can resort to force & censorship. All the more vital & precious, then, the faculty of philosophy, which encourages independent thought before action. The first section, "The Conflict of the Philosophy Faculty with the Theology Faculty," is essentially a vindication of the right of the philosophical faculty to freedom of expression. In the other sections the philosopher takes a long and penetrating look at medicine & law, the one preserving the physical "temple" & the other regulating its actions.

--Jens Kertscher

“Universal Natural History & Theory of the Heavens, or Essay on the Constitution & Mechanical Origin of the Entire Universe, treated in accordance with Newtonian Principles.” Translated by W. Hastie (Glasgow: J. Maclehose, 1900). Revised & edited by Willey Ley (NY: Greenwood Publ. Co., 1968). Translated by Stanley L. Jaki (Edinburgh: Scottish Academic Press, 1981).
Not long after this book was printed, the publisher went bankrupt, his inventory seized. Consequently this work—dedicated to the King & carrying with it the hopes for some literary fame for the young author—scarcely enjoyed a public viewing in Kant’s day, & was little known outside of Königsberg; Goldbeck [1781, 248] notes that “this work is one of his first writings & only lately become recognized.” Later scholars arrived at similar conclusions independently of Kant—Johann Lambert in 1761 & Pierre-Simon Laplace in 1796. This certainly would have troubled the young Kant, who near the end of his 1763 Only Possible Argument tried to correct the public record with the following footnote:
“The title of the book is Allgemeine Naturgeschichte [...]. This work, which has remained little known, cannot have come to the attention of, among others, the celebrated J. H. Lambert. Six years later, in his Kosmologische Briefe 1761, he presented precisely the same theory of the systematic constitution of the cosmos in general, the Milky way, the nebulae & so forth, which is to be found in my above-mentioned theory of the heavens, the first part & likewise in the preface to that book. [...] The agreement between the thoughts of this ingenious man & those presented by myself at that time almost extends to the finer details of the theory, & it only serves to strengthen my supposition that this sketch will receive additional confirmation in the course of time” [Ak. 2:69; Walford trans.]
In later years, Kant tried to interest publishers in reissuing the book, without success. Eventually his younger colleague & close friend, J. F Gensichen, published a selection alongside a translation into German of three essays by William Herschel: Über den Bau des Himmels (Königsberg: Nicolovius, 1791). See Vorländer (1924, i.104, ii.86).

The purpose of the Cambridge Edition is to offer translations of the best modern German edition of Kant's work in a uniform format suitable for Kant scholars. This volume contains the first translation into English of notes from Kant's lectures on metaphysics. These lectures, dating from the 1760's to the 1790's, touch on all the major topics and phases of Kant's philosophy. Most of these notes have appeared only recently in the German Academy Edition and this translation offers many corrections of that edition.

Kant was concerned with issues in the philosophy of natural science throughout his life. The Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science presents mature reflections on these themes in the context of both his critical philosophy, presented in the Critique of Pure Reason, & the natural science of his time. This book features a new translation which is especially clear & accurate, together with an historical & philosophical introduction & a guide to further reading.
Metaphysische Anfangsgründe der Naturwissenschaften (Riga: Johann Friedrich Hartknoch, 1786), xxiv, 158pp. (2nd printing: 1787; 3rd: 1800). This volume is the first to assemble the writings that Kant published to popularize, summarize, amplify & defend the doctrines of his masterwork, the 1781 Critique of Pure Reason. The Prolegomena is often recommended to students, but the other texts are also important representatives of Kant's intellectual development. The series includes copious linguistic notes & a glossary of key terms. The editorial introductions & explanatory notes reveal much about the critical reception given him by the metaphysicians of his day as well as his own efforts to derail his opponents.

It's formatted to display on all electronic devices including Kindle, Smartphones & other Mobile Devices with small displays.
Whatever concept one may hold from a metaphysical point of view concerning the freedom of the will, certainly its appearances, which are human actions, like every other natural event are determined by universal laws. However obscure their causes, history, which is concerned with narrating these appearances, permits us to hope that if we attend to the play of freedom of the human will in the large, we may be able to discern a regular movement in it, & that what seems chaoticly complex in the single individual may be seen from the human standpoint to be a steady & progressive tho slow evolution of its original endowment. Since the free will has obvious influence upon marriages, births & deaths, they seem to be subject to no rule by which the number of them could be reckoned in advance.

"Prolegomena contains an overview and defense of the Critique's main conclusions, sometimes by arguments Kant had not used in the Critique. Kant characterizes his more accessible approach here as an "analytic" one, as opposed to the Critique's "synthetic" examination of successive faculties of the mind and their principles.

The book is also intended as a polemic. Kant was disappointed by the poor reception of the Critique of Pure Reason, and here he repeatedly emphasizes the importance of its critical project for the very existence of metaphysics as a science. The final appendix contains a detailed rebuttal to an unfavorable review of the Critique." (Quote from wikipedia.org)

Table of Contents:

Publisher's Preface; Introduction; Preamble On The Peculiarities Of All Metaphysical Cognition; How Is Pure Mathematics Possible?; How Is The Science Of Nature Possible?; How Is Metaphysics In General Possible?; Conclusion; Solution Of The General Question Of The Prolegomena: "how Is Metaphysics Possible As A Science?"; Appendix

About the Publisher:

Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion and Mythology. www.forgottenbooks.org

Forgotten Books is about sharing knowledge, not about making money.
