Danu is an Irish group that hails from counties Derry, Donegal, Dublin, and Waterford. Lead singer Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh is a Gaelic speaker though the song I picked for today is in English. Audio books are becoming more popular because it's much easier to access them through digital downloads these days. In the past, they consisted of a bunch of clunky CDs you had to lug around. Now, listeners can simply download an audio book in a matter of minutes from Audible, Amazon, iTunes or... Read more of this blog post »
One year ago today, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
I’d felt a lump several months earlier and had gone to my doctor for no fewer than three breast exams, only to be told that the lump felt like normal fibro-cystic tissue to her. I felt safe. I shouldn't have.
When I got the call that they had... Read more of this blog post »

Someone had carved a massive door into the mountain. None could say who. Some thought it was the final remnant of an ancient civilization, forgotten by time. Others claimed the gods themselves had done it. And still others claimed it wasn’t a door at all, but just a natural rock f...Read more of this blog post »

My mother sewed, I knit, neither of us quilt, so I am always impressed when I see an expression of self done in cloth and needle, but when I opened the box that showed up in my PO box and found this yesterday, the world fell away and I lost myself for a good hour looking at the detail and remembe...Read more of this blog post »
IN some things you just dread to ask why.
I have liberated the clog of 13 posts from the depths of the filter. I have not yet sorted them. I have no idea what could have triggered the problem, involving Hanneke, Teasel, and others—I find nothing particularly sinister in teacakes.
YESTERDAY’S PULP: “THE MOPPER-UP” BY HORACE MCCOY (1931)by Fred Blosser
I was in the mood to revisit Horace McCoy, but I already had a half-dozen other books stacked up in my to-read pile. I was reluctant to break my stride by reaching for “Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye” or even one of McCoy’s other, shor... Read more of this blog post »

A couple of weeks ago at the British Eastercon I found myself on a panel discussion about vampires. (Hey, I've been trying to get the hell away from being Mr Singularity Guy for years now; what's your problem?)

My father, Gunter David, passed away today at 2:53 in the morning. He died of cancer at the age of 85. He has been in hospice care for some weeks and lapsed into a coma several days ago. He died in his own bed, with his daughter Beth and my mother lying next to him.
I miss him terribly.
We all remember playground bullies. How did you deal with yours? Natural human instinct makes the weaker party tend to cower, to slink and avoid contact with local thugs, hoping they won't notice you. Indeed, that's the reaction bullying is intended to bring about, for nothing terrifies an abuser... Read more of this blog post »
